BEND OF THE RIVER GC

Recommended Posts

I am planning on visiting Sante Fe this for 3-4 days in late June, early July and will golf and do orher stuff as well.

Courses I am interested in are Black Mesa, Twin Warriors and PaaKo Ridge. Any others???

What are the best public courses there, and what types of things are there to see, do and eat???

When? It has already started snowing up north now.

But, Cochiti, Marty Sanchez Links are close. You will have to check on Paako...might already be done by the time you get there. Black Mesa is in horrid shape, so I don't recommend playing unless you just want to see it. In ABQ, you can play Twin Warriors or UNM.

As for what to see, Santa Fe is small enough...just look up the main items - Lorretto, the Plaza

For eats: Geronimo is tops for high end; Chile Toreado & Pantry, Parasol, Epazote for N. Mexican; I Love Harrys Roadhouse(green chile cheeseburger); I love rooftop pizzeria in the plaza then walk to the other end for beers at Draft Station; Chili Line Brewing for some micro beer.

Use to live in Santa Fe. The best course in NM is Paako Ridge. Great views and great course! The UNM course by the airport in ABQ is pretty good as far as public courses go.

I would recommend Maria's, Tres Amigos, Horseman's Haven(if you like really spicy food and hole in the walls), and Tecalote Cafe is great for breakfast.

Ahh...then it will be perfect. I would play Paako, Cochiti and Twin Warriors or UNM. Marty Sanchez if you just want something close.

You can always try and get on Campanas if you are a member somewhere or just call and ask.

mtharp threw in some good eats too. I think it should be Los Amigos though, I don't know of a Tres Amigos.

I think we will drive from Cincinnati so we can check out some of Rte 66. I am sure Oklahoma will be a boring drive, but maybe we can play 9 somewhere along the way.

From what I gather Sante Fe is a small town, should I plan on spending some time in Albuquerque as well???

Santa Fe is small. There are lots of galleries and museums... and great restaurants at all price points The Folk Art Museum is fantastic, even if you are not an art lover. The New Mexico history museum is very good as well as the Indian Art and culture museum. Taos is even smaller and more artsy. The Puye Cliff Dwellings and Rio Grande gorge near Taos are very cool.

Albuquerque is also a cool place. If you are a fan of Breaking Bad you can visit many of the places where the show was shot.

Here are some links to photos of various places in Alb, Santa Fe and Taos. If you go to Taos, check out Taos Country Club. It's a nice course and the pro posts here.

Neither are big towns and, as someone that has driven KY/AZ in both directions, I can say with great confidence that there is very little of interest along the way. I'm sure that there are places you can play but of the 3 times I've done the trip (2 times to AZ, once back to KY) I have done everything I can to limit my stops between ABQ and LEX. The drive is as boring of a drive you can get until you start heading downhill just outside ABQ.

If you drive strait east from here on the 10 to las cruces they have red hawk golf course, which is honestly up to par with almost everything I've played here in Phoenix, which is saying a lot for las cruces . Then alb is 2 1/2 hours north of cruces. But it was also voted (golf digest lol) as one of the best courses in NM the 2 years I lived there.

If you're going to do Rt 66, Amarillo has several courses worth playing, Tascosa CC, La Paloma are private, but easy to get on. Amarillo CC, you have to know someone. Ross Rogers is a muni with a newly renovated 18, inexpensive, but nice. 6th Street is a part of old 66, an entertainment district with some decent food. I would drive up to Taos rather than down to Alb, just because it's a smaller, funkier place and completely different than the city life to which you're accustomed. A nice course there, as well.

LOL...the same. I was stationed in MO and made those drives....whole lot of nothing no matter what. Personally I would rather take extra time and drive to Denver...Maybe play Ballyneal or one of the awesome courses in Denver area, then down to Co Springs and visit Garden of the Gods, then down to Taos and spend time there(it is better than Santa Fe in that it has maintained itself history, culture and personality wise). Taos CC is a great course imo.

I ha e driven to Denver on several occasions. I guess we could drive back that way. I drive closer to 90 mph in kansas and it still wasmt fast enough. Dirt roads right off the exit ramps!

Right now I am leaning towards these courses:

Univ NM (NM)

Black Mesa (NM) conditions ???

PaaKo Ridge (NM)

Pinon Hills (NM)

Hideout GC (UT)

USAF Academy (If someone can get me on!)

Common Ground (CO)

Wild Horse (NE)

When you're heading back from Denver (I'm guessing this is when you're hitting Wildhorse), try a slightly different route, you'll be glad you did. When you hit Fort Morgan on I76, go north on Hwy 71 about 70 miles to Kimball, NE. Play Four Winds Golf Course. $45 for a terrific course where you might be the only person out. And it's right on I80, it will take you literally five minutes from the course parking lot til you're eastbound on I80 heading towards Gothenburg.

Skip Black Mesa.......very bad condition.

I heard that Black Mesa is worth playing anyway, are the conditions really that bad? Have you played it recently???

I guess that we could play Univ NM course instead....or Twin Warriors....
