New clubs for Bubba Watson this week

In Bubba's press conference yesterday at the Hero Challenge, he said that he will be putting a bunch of new Ping clubs in play this week. New iBlades and new wedges (presumably Glide 2.0) will be in the bag. He said he will bring a few new putters as well. The biggest surprise was that he said he will have a new HYBRID in the bag. He talked about how he needs the extra height for shots into par 5's as opposed to a 2 iron. I know that he has used a 7 wood in the past for this slot in the bag too, but he hasn't had a hybrid in the bag since his Nationwide Tour days (that is what he says in the interview at least).

 

If someone with super high club head speed like Bubba needs a hybrid or high lofted fairway wood, then perhaps we all do!

The difference between the pros and MOST of us is that they have the luxury to switch between hybrid and long iron or utility each week based on the course setup. Come January he'll have the 2-iron back in the bag. At Erin Hills I bet he puts the Hybrid back in play and maybe Torrey Pines as well.

The iBlades are new for him. He tried them temporarily when they were first announced but went back to the 55. Looks like he's committing to the iBlade possibly.

Yes, my point is that I think it is pretty obvious that he is referencing the iBlade as his new irons when he clearly said in the interview that he was putting the new iBlades into play.

It's not only about clubhead speed. I prefer my Mizuno MP-H4 utility irons (or regular long irons) specifically because I hit them lower than hybrids and fairway woods, making them more reliable for a high-launch player like myself. That, plus a regular Joe like myself doesn't generally need to hold greens that run as fast as those Bubba typically deals with.

I put my ego aside this year and started bagging a 20º hybrid instead of a 5w and/or driving iron. Aside from moving to a counter balanced putter, it was the best move I made all year.

 

The "height into par 5s" Bubba mentioned has been precisely the thing I love about the club—it's a par 5 destroyer.

 

I also love the shotmaking versatility. I can draw it 255 or I can hit a high cut that only flies about 225-230. One of the really cool side effects of this versatility is the fact that I now have more options off the tee on par 5s. I can hit driver, 4w, or even the hybrid off the tee and still have a hybrid into the green.

 

At this point, I almost think it would be better to add a 24º hybrid to my arsenal, too. I'm decent with a 4-iron, but probably not as decent as I'd be with a 24º hybrid!
