Troon has an instructional photo when you approach the first green at their course, people just do not follow those instructions

Wildfire Faldo fairways and greens excellent. Course is in very very good shape. Hate the bunker sand out there though. That thick river sand meh.

Coming in next month for 10 day vacation and have a house rented at Seville GC (private) in Gilbert. What are your recommendations for two great courses no more than 45 min drive.

Southern Dunes and ?

Appreciate any help.

I used to live in Chandler, but looking for current local knowledge. Thanks.

Whirlwind Golf Club is 35 minutes from Seville. It's also 20-25 minutes away from Southern Dunes.

Gold Canyon Dinosaur is 40 minutes.

Wekopa, Troon North and North Scottsdale golf courses are going to be 50-55 minutes away from Seville.

If time is the most important factor, I would choose Longbow over Whirlwind or Gold Canyon, just my personal preference (25 mins from Seville). Really an extra 20 mins from longbow and you are at WeKoPa. If you can spare the time play Saguaro.

Southern Dunes and We Ko Pa Saguaro it is! Thanks fellas.

Played Verde River today... far more comparable to Links conditions than Southern Dunes on Tuesday.

Leaving the Valley in the morning but considering I played Troon North Pinnacle, Southern Dunes and Verde River for $50 or less I'd say it was a very successful trip.

If I were to rank the three I'd go Pinnacle, Verde River and Southern Dunes in third.

For clarification the reason SD was the lowest of the three is because I'm spoiled when it comes to Links courses by living in Nebraska. SD was not firm or fast while I was there, the greens were much too small for Links golf and the fairways didn't have near enough undulation IMO. I thought Verde River had more Links elements today, it was brown but not dead, it was very firm, fast, large greens, undulating fairways, etc. that doesn't mean I think it is a links course but it played much more like one this week.

Fellow Husker. Went to school in Lincoln. Remember a few courses I've played there and Omaha. Applewood. Mahoneys. Plattsmouth. Good times.

Very cool, I am an alum as well. Enjoyed my stay in Scottsdale, when I return in the summer perhaps we can make the schedules work and play 9 or 18 some place

By the way, I will post a couple days out because I love to hook up with some fellow Golfwrxer's to play SD or Saguaro. I like to be the first out (or just early) and keep in mind I am about 10 hdcp.

Verde River has almost always been firm/fast when I've played. The only exception was 1 or 2 early summer rounds when they probably had to water the course to keep it from getting extreme. Even then, I wouldn't have considered it "wet". This is why it's still one of my favorites out here as it's the only one that keeps the course firm and doesn't water the heck out of everything.

Played Papago on Friday. In good shape. The greens seemed to be running just a tid bit slow for there, but might have just been the day. They were running well downhill, but up hill up grain they were slower than I'm accustomed to there. Probably the seasonal change.

Played Aguila on Sunday. Greens punched (forgot to ask before booking). Other than that, course was in the decent shape. The bunkers had nice sand in them (I played 6 shots out of them...), but on one occasion one of the bunkers were over full.

Good weekend of golf!!

Crap. Wish I could be in this but will unfortunately be in Ireland that weekend playing at Old Head (don't worry, I'll probably be able to suffer through it ;) )

In the world of excuses this might be the best one. Enjoy

Played Whirlwind Devil's Claw yesterday. Pace was bad. Greens were weird, looked like they'd be slow but they were decently fast. Greens were stupidly receptive like normal out there.

Playing WKP-Saguaro and TS-O'oodham next week. Has anyone played either recently?

I played Saguaro 2 weeks ago and it was in great shape. The bunkers are a little thin but other than that the course was in great shape.

I played Cholla last weekend and it was also in great shape. The only thing was the greens were slower than normal and a little inconsistent. Not sure why or if that would have changed at Saguaro in the week that I played it, but, I was a bit surprised as the pace and consistency at Cholla.

Has anyone played Gold Canyon recently? I grew up in Phoenix, but haven't been back in almost 4 years. I'll be in town next week to visit family and we'll probably play Gold Canyon as it used to be one of our go to courses. We're also looking at Southern Dunes, Vista Verde, Estrella Golf Club, Quintero and maybe Mountain Shadows for an afternoon 18. My family lives on the Raven golf course and we're willing to drive up to an hour for a good course. Any info on Gold Canyon and / or other recent local knowledge would be appreciated. Thanks!

Played at Karsten GC over the weekend in a scramble. The course layout is interesting. Not terribly difficult. Conditions extremely hard and fast. I guess this course is on borrowed time.

As a Pete Dye course, Karsten is supposed to play firm and fast. Why do you say it is on "borrowed time?"

Firm and fast was fine. I thought they were going to develop that land? I could be wrong.

You are not wrong. No timetable yet, but it will be developed.

I'm headed out to Verde River this afternoon for a round. Do they have any food and drinks on site or should we plan to eat elsewhere?
