Resident rates

Any type of life hack to get the residents rate at az courses without being a resident or playing with one?

I think it's kinda bs that they charge a different rate to different people just because you are out of town. Now if your tax dollars are specifically going to these course to keep them in good shape then I understand that.

B.S for residents to get a discount? Show me a course that gives them.

I think it's B.S that we have to pay the rate increases when people like you come here to escape the snow driving all of the prices up.

I say if you don't like it, move here or go somewhere else..I hear Canada is nice this time of year...or be like most of us and buy a city card or local golf card...I don't think it's fair we have a higher sales tax rate but it is what it is...

So let me get this right? You believe that it is b.s. that people arrive to a warmer place to play golf..supply and demand allows the golf course to raise the rates but somehow just because you live there year around you deserve a discount? In AZ do they charge you different prices for gas depending on how low your gas tank is filled?

A simple no or buy a discount card would have sufficed.

Maybe it is a way of thanking those that play the course year round.

Pretty sure courses would be just as busy without the extra demand and if the rates didn't raise this much in winter...the only reason play is down in summer is because of the heat. Even then, some courses still stay pretty busy.

Exactly... I know I only moved here a few months ago, but, I already find myself drawn to playing places that offer a resident rate which has a significant discount. I play TPC almost weekly for this reason specifically. Its not the greatest course, its a solid course no doubt, but seeing them make golf at a solid facility affordable for residents makes me wants to play there. since it's now in my regular rotation, I can almost guarantee you, in the summer I will keep playing there.

It's really simple, smart business. Give the people who will play the course more than 1 time in a year (residents) a reason to keep coming back to generate revenue throughout the year. Would you rather have the customer that comes 1 time and spends $200 or the customer who will come 10 times and spend $100 each time? It's pretty simple business.

I would argue that we actually do not have enough resident rates provided by courses. AZ has to be one of the worst states for courses that offer resident rates. Wekopa, City Courses Verde River, Talking Stick now that they are not Troon are all that I can think of.

All 12 Troon managed courses Nope not a chance even though they have resident rates in CA Grayhawk nope, Camelback nope

OP is going to lose his mind if he ever goes to Torrey Pines.

Completely agree. I was pretty surprised when I got here at the lack of resident rate courses. It makes golfing in the winter $$$$

TPC Scottsdale - Champions has, IMO the best resident rate in the valley. It's a very solid track and they charge like $65 in the winter for a resident walking rate. Their website times are always like $100 resident, but, I have never paid that (and I always book through their website at that rate).

Harding Park is CRAZY resident vs. nonresident as well. Must be a California thing lol

TPC is technically a city course The city funded the renovation of the Champions and IIRC one of the caveats was to keep a reasonable resident rate for Champions after its remodel from the desert course

Ya stay away from the Bay Area and Monterey and um, erm... many other places that try and mitigate the costs of things for their local residents.

And stay away from Subway too. Why the hell should someone get a free sub after buying many other subs? That's b.s.

Thanks, that I can agree with.

I wasn't trying to pick a fight..just seeing what is out there to make my upcoming trip a bit cheaper. I've done the tpc card before and it is a fantastic deal during the non peak times of the year but for this trip I didn't want to get trapped into playing the champions and stadium course to justify the card purchase. Luckily I will be there next week..looks like the week after next is stupid expensive.

And No I have no desire to play Torre. After playing Punta Espanda the year before last I couldn't imagine paying more than that for Torre. It was me and a one other twosome on the whole course.

Actually, you were trying to "pick a fight". Your first statement was how to game the system. Your second statement was how "bs" the situation is. And your third statement was a backhanded comment that AZ residents should only be afforded discounts if we pay taxes.

But I digress and stand by my comment and others here. Too bad your name and photo can't be posted in the golf shops and you get charged double. Or maybe just don't come at all, because based on your history, I am guessing your post after your trip will be filled with negativity and complaints about the trip.

I am genuinely curious as to why you think it is unfair that local residents who support the courses year round, year after year do not deserve a price break?

I am not looking for answers like its not fair or I'm entitled to the same lower rates

Well to those who said wait tell he playes Torry or Bethpage..they are state run facilities as far as I know. Again if the course gets public funding I agree with resident rates.

At private facilities up in Minnesota or Michigan do they charge people from AZ or any other state or country a up charge in their peak times because it extremely hot during most of the daylight hours in AZ? Some might but I haven't experienced that.

I'm not saying you should pay the non resident rate..more like everyone should pay the resident rate whatever rate that would be. If anyone wants to argue supply and demand..I would say that the Resident rate goes against pure capitalism in which a lot of golf courses in the country operate by..most sought after tee time goes to the highest bidder no matter where you come from. Why would they need to reward you? Really where else are you going to go as a AZ resident? Are the courses so afraid of charging a higher rate for everyone that enough residents would play during peak season or move entirely?

For starters, I would assume one big difference between Minnesota/Michigan from Arizona is the fact that the golf season there is basically 6 months. Another think you would need to consider is the amount of out state visitors condensed to a short period time in one state vs. the other. I can assure you without even looking at numbers that Arizona has a significantly higher amount and percentage of vacationers than Minnesota and Michigan. It's not a perfect science but it's also not exactly an apples to apples comparison. The population drastically increases in Phoenix in the winter months. While a lot of people have vacation homes and such in Minnesota and Michigan, the vacation areas aren't major metropolitan areas. So you don't get near the amount of longer term people (snow birds).

And for what's worth, my family has a vacation home in Northern Michigan. There are resident rates at some courses up there as well, which are also private businesses. I only know this because I still have an Otsego County utility bill sitting somewhere in the bottom of my golf bag that I would flash because I didn't have a Michigan license.

Local high end course tried that a couple years ago during Pro bowl and Superbowl weeks. Jacked up the price to $350 per round vs the normal $190-200ish They sold 50 tee times pro bowl weekend between two courses. I ended up playing for $100 because a contact of mine was offered to buy and resell tee times a a significantly reduced price. Meanwhile Grayhawk did not budge off their $185 rack rate. Both Grayhawk courses were sold out. Troon would have been sold out at rack rate as well instead they took a huge hit on one of the busiest weekends here

Week in and week out all year round local residents are the ones filling up the first hours of the daily tee sheets and the good chunk of the rest of the day, you take that resident rate away from them they either dont play or find another course. There are over 200 courses here in town and the vast majority of them are not resort/destination type courses so yeah they will take any and all business they can.

I think I echo a lot of people when I say this....Not many courses are worth over $100 round. I'm from Michigan...Treetops, Garland, etc usually are under $120 or $130 a round...even then that 's their rack rate...normally can be found cheaper. Now, I would pay $180- $250 for a course that's "famous" or well known like a Pinehurst 2 or Torrey Pines or whatnot but that is a once every couple year type thing, not a weekly round...and most people don't have an extra $1000 to pay each month in the winter if they want to play once per week. Not everyone is Bob Parsons and can afford that, so we do appreciate courses offering resident rates which still gives them rounds...and don't forget a lot of us bring people in from out of town to play and contribute to their rounds as well.

Apparently, there aren't enough visitors during the winter months or they wouldn't have resident rates at all. There are all kinds of tee times available for non destination type of courses.

I totally get it..I do. I was just hoping for a way around the non resident rate beside a fake utility bill or driver's license. Apparently, every other type of golf expense discount is fair game around this place whether or not it was meant for you not but not resident rates.

Anyway, Mods you can close this thread since I started it out totally wrong way.

1. I don't know of a private club in AZ that has anything similar to resident rates. Not sure why that is your comparison point. In cases where the club allows unaccompanied play they likely charge more. We don't. There's one standard guest rate depending on time of the year.

2. Resident rates aren't usually available more than 3 days in advance (some exceptions)

1. If I have mistakenly said anything about private clubs I'm sorry. I was talking about non state funded public golf courses.

2. I would be fine if courses would give you the resident rate if you booked a round for the same day. They might I just haven't inquired.
