My 5 year old daughter wants to try golf out. She is 43" tall. US kids has a set for 42" and 45" tall kids. Which would you recommend? I just don't want to get her a set that is too heavy for her to swing. Thanks for your help!

My daughter at 5 started with the 45" set which I believe was purple shafts at the time. I got them used.

They are pretty soft shafts and light - I don't think they would be a problem with being too heavy. The shafts are thin and soft.

No issues with getting hurt hitting fat shots or anything with these ever for her.

Good luck.

My daughter is 44.5" with her sneakers on and has both sets - she started with the 42" and played those last year, moved up to the 45" and after a couple range sessions went back to the 42's...she's nailing the sweet spot with them.

My general takeaway based on her experience and a few other parents' feedback is that your child should be well above the given measurement before moving up...e.g. we won't put her in the 45's until she's probably 47" tall.

As another person here said, shorter and lighter is better to build confidence and sound swing.

My 6 year old son is almost 49". Still plays the 45" irons and hits them great (for a 6 year old). Plays the 48" driver only because the head is so much bigger and easier to hit. He looks so much more in control with shorter clubs, so like someone else, I advocate being above the height on the clubs, so I would get the 42" for your daughter.

If these are there first clubs and they are getting serious with go you can not go wrong with US kids ultra light. Make sure you measure them and get the correct size and buy new clubs if they grow out of them. Plan on them only lasting 8-10 months. Most good golf stores will know how to fit them and if you should go a size up.

There are lots of good clubs out there but you need be careful about weight when there just learning to swing. Once the start to increase swing speed there are lot clubs choices out there now for juniors and you should explore them.

Every time I go to the range I see some 3 or 4 year old STRUGGLING to swing a "junior" non-US Kids set and I debate whether to walk over and give my two cents about getting the kid started with the right clubs. The fact of the matter is if my daughter didn't start with the Ultralight set at age 2+, I'm not sure she would've stuck with the game for the last two years.

Agreed.

I think the same exact thing.

FWIW, My son is only 3 1/2 years old and is suppose to be in the red 39", but I bought him a 42" yellow set when Golfsmith was closing their doors. He asked me if he could take the yellow clubs to the range one day and hasn't looked back. The bigger club, while according to US Kids charts, shouldn't fit but he actually hits them better. The very slightly bigger size and even a tad more weight has slowed his tempo down to where he makes better contact. I added the 20º driver and he's hitting it straight every time and his longest drive has been 72 yards with an average of around 65. He was getting around 55 with his red driver. My 2 year old is now using the red set.

Edit: IMO, it has more to do with a child's strength than height. If it appears they can't handle the weight of a club, they will struggle and it will be noticeable.

It is both.

I see kids trying to swing Adult Clubs and just can't do it because of weight, but the length is correct. Improper weight leads to improper mechanics which leads to poor fundamentals and technique.

I see kids swinging Adult Clubs that are just too long. When they are too long they can't get the club around their body properly which again leads to improper mechanics and poor fundamentals/technique.

With that said, I always have purchased clubs my son could handle. When he was 10 I bought him the US Kids Tour Series 60" set (should've been in the 57" set) and he has used them for almost 2 years. He just got a new set 2 weeks ago and the 60" were actually looking to short despite him being 62".

I just upgraded him to Wilson Staff FG Tour V6 Forged irons with a KBS Tour 80g steel shaft cut a 1/2" short off of standard. They are still about a 1/2" - 1" long, but I didn't want to turn around and buy new clubs again in 6 months. We had him custom fitted by the Wilson Rep in our area and had he had mechanical issues I wouldn't haven't purchased them. I could have gone 1 degree flat on them but the Rep and I decided to go standard because after he grows another inch or two he will need standard. He has gained about 7 yards distance on each club. The biggest difference is the accuracy of the heavier steel shaft (the US Kids were getting too whippy) and the backspin he can create with them. The ball takes a bounce and gets a foot of backspin. We also went 4i-PW which US Kids doesn't offer the 4i.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

There is a lot advice on kids clubs. Kids are not much different then adults you need to custom fit your clubs. Just like adults you can spend a lot or just buy off the rack.

If you are buying off the rack US Kids is going to be the easiest and best fit. If your kids fall out of the norm or your looking to gain an edge then there is a lot different options. I have seen good and bad custom clubs that local kids use with different women clubs and junior shafts. It is amazing how much improvement you can get with good equipment. I honestly think if you have a very good junior you will need to fit them to their swing speed. Not too many pro's or coaches actually understand how to build a custom junior club.

The biggest problem that most people will have is if your kid is going though a growth spurt. If that is the case your lucky to get 6 months out of the clubs. It's why you end up seeing kids with clubs too long. I really wish US Kids had extension you could buy to extend the shaft to the next level. This would really help keep the cost down and make more sense. As far as I know there isn't any reliable way to do this with US kids shafts.
