Buddy Trip to Las Vegas in Nov. 2017

Philipp

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

We're four guys planning our annual buddy trip.

Hcp from 5 to 15. Age late 30s to early 40s. Fun group.

Been three times in a row to Florida (Naples, Orlando, Orlando) and now want to see something else. So we decided to go to Las Vegas in November 2017.

So far we came down to those courses:

Sun 18 Angel Park (Mountain)

Mon 18 Rhodes Ranch

Tue 36 Paiute (Snow or Sun and Wolf)

Wed 18 TPC Summerlin

Thu 18 Primm Valley

Fri 18 Reflection Bay

We want to stay at the strip. Bellagio, MGM or something else.

Any recommendations? What should we change?

Thanks for your input.

Philipp

Angel Park is OK, but I only live 90 minutes away from it. I would not travel any distance and have it in my rotation. Rent a car and drive to Mesquite for Wolf Creek or Falcon Ridge. Worth the drive.

I did not like wolf creek at all. I always wonder if people who recommend it have played it. It's decent, but not worth the money. And kinda gimmicky in my opinion.

Conditions were OK when I went last year. Staff attitude was also mediocre.

Some cool vistas, but way too much (constant) elevation change for me.

Dump Angel Park and go literally up the road to TPC Las Vegas.

Replace Rhodes Ranch with Rio Secco.

Seconded. Have not played Rio Secco but played Rhodes Ranch once and the conditioning didn't impress me. And Angel Park f*cked up a large guys outing tournament there once so bad I won't go back. I've played TPC LV and it was a fun track. Just remember, everything breaks towards the Stratosphere, even if it looks like it doesn't!

I agree, but it's one of those courses you should probably play once to say you did. It is still on the Top 100 list. I like Falcon Ridge much better. Still gimmicky with the elevation changes but a more fun course.

If you're going to stay at an MGM property such as Bellagio I would consider playing Shadow Creek. You can only play Shadow if you stay at an MGM property. It's expensive approximately $500 but you won't forget the experience. You can't drive to the course, a Limo will pick you up and you have to have a caddie. You will be treated like a VIP from the time that you arrive until the time that you leave.

- I'd agree with Paiute, it's such a cool place just outside of vegas, I've only played Wolf but all 3 courses are a great Pete Dye design situated literally out in the middle of the desert. Nothing to look at but green fairways and desert mountains in the background.

- I'd also agree with Angel Park, it's always in good condition and at a reasonable rate. I personally like the Palm course better, the Mountain is more popular but I like the ravines and how much more open the Palm course is. Both courses are great though IMO.

- Last, I'd drop Rhodes Ranch. It's a nice course but there are plenty of courses like it in Vegas. That neighborhood also recently got bought out so I can't say if their golf course is staying up to par.

- I'd replace it with either Rio Secco or Spanish Trail Country Club. Spanish Trail is a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design and consists of 3 9 hole courses, and if you know the RTJ name then you know it's a great course.

- There's no 1 way to golf in Vegas, so many courses of different types and price ranges, your going to be happy either way. Have fun!

Revere is decent. I was there this past weekend working on the range and short game and they were busy. Try and get on Lexington, I am told it is in great shape right now. Only downside to Revere is the tee times are a tad close together, it can take a while to get around there on the weekend.

Coyote springs and reflection bay are both great tracks. Wolf creek is a tough nut, but can be fun if it is calm out. That place is extremely difficult in any kind of wind.

Phillip, I agree with most guys here. Scratch Angel Park, Primm, and Rhodes.

Substitute Rio Secco, Cascata (if you have the budget) or Coyote Springs if you don't mind driving. Sounds like a great trip!

Edit: If you get the early tee time at Coyote Springs, you can likely still turn 36 and get a decent rate on the 2nd 18.

I would sub one of the first 2 for bears best and Rio Secco/Cascata. If you want to drive an hour I would stay one night in mesquite and play 2 there and then drive across the border and play Sand Hollow. Wolf and then Sand Hollow would be the bucket list courses I would recommend. Coyote is know for sub par service and you should search that out before you book.

Angel park and it is very boring.

Rhodes ranch is a 122 slope from the back. not much of a challenge.

Just realized that there will be the Shriners two weeks before we‘ll play TPC Summerlin.

Is this a good or a bad thing?

Will there still be TV towers or grand stands on the site? Blocking anything, any views?

Greens maybe suffering after they made them play fast for the tourney?

I played there one year the Tuesday after the tournament. They were on the process of tearing the stuff down. I don't remember any views being impeded.

We played 18 from the pro tees, just because. My pretty good drive barely carried the ravine. (got a par!)

There's no way the TV remnants would still be there two weeks later.

I really liked that course. Get the burger at the turn!

If this is the official "November 2017 golf in Vegas" thread, I'm heading to Vegas with a pal and looking at playing Bear's Best and Pauite Sun & Snow (we've previously played The Wolf). We're looking to fill out the trip with a cheaper round, but where the course is still in decent condition. We are also considering golf boards, which brings me to Desert Pines. Any thoughts on this course specifically? If it's a dump, we'll probably head back to Las Vegas National.

(sorry if I'm hijacking the thread, but I feel like this info is great for everyone)

It seems that course is either hated or liked. What I can figure it the fact that some of the holes are tight and that bothers people. I think there are better options like reflection bay (watch conditions because they were having green issues but closed for over seeding and could be good by mid October) , Primm, Tpc Vegas.

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions! I think we are doing Bear's Best and 36-holes at Pauite as our "premium" courses (let's call courses like Wynn and Shadow Creek "ultra-premium") and I think Reflection Bay and TPC Vegas would be considered "premium" based on their price point. We'll definitely have to play Reflection and TPC Vegas next year though, as this is an annual trip in November.

Primm Valley was off my radar though, so I'm intrigued. What are some basic selling points of Primm? The first selling point I can see if $60 rounds in November. :)

Our reasoning for considering Desert Pines: $69 rates in November + golf boards. We had a blast last year at Las Vegas National with the golf boards. My concern with Desert Pines is the rumors of narrow fairways not allowing you to hit driver. I'm not looking for a methodical round on this day... I'm looking for vodka lemonades and "no laying up."

Primm is a good experience if you can and don't mind driving, You could also get the higher cost courses on teeoff and golfnow likely. I would even try the courses you are playing for deals.

cons-

-Primm is about as far of drive as Paiute but the other way.

can get burned out in July/August

Pro's-

-2 Fazio courses that are usually is awesome shape. lake is the better track

-Price

- forgiving but can not overly forgiving with proper tee's. (up to 7k yards)
