Anyone know is Sea Pines uses solid tine or core aeration?  I'm there in late July and was going to book Harbor Town and Atlantic Dunes but saw an aeration warning.  I've played many courses after solid tine and it's didn't really bother me.  Not sure I'll spend the money if they are pulling cores.

It's been like 6 or 7 years but last time I was there that time of year it was cores and very heavy topdressing. They didn't have a warning either back then.

Here's the schedule.  Heron is last to be done (last few days of July/early August) Atlantic Dunes will be first followed by HT in July.  Of all the aeration, this is the 'least' invasive.  I'm not sure whether that means it's the little needles or not, but it does take a good 7 days to be playable again.

Just got back from Sea Pines

What a beautiful area

Was only able to play Harbor Town one day but what a great course

The trees don't bother me as my home course is lined with them and I still managed to hit a few so I would feel like I was home.

Broke 90 so I was happy with that. (normally play to an 8hcp)

The 18th green is so small

Highly recommended but understand the cost

The first time I saw the 18th green, I thought it was a temporary. I asked the assistant superintendent where the real green was located, and he had a good laugh.

Better off with extra club in your hand in the fairway than trying to bomb drives on 1-15.  Punishing angles from 150 yards in on most holes.  A 225 yard tee ball down the middle will be rewarded!

Bumping this. Headed to Savannah Mon-Tues before heading to the Masters on Wed. Have Atlantic Dunes tee time on Monday, and HHN Tuesday.

Any reason to switch to PD RTJ?

if you play AD you can also check out Heron Point which is the same property in Sea Pines.  45-60 minutes from Savannah.  Hilton Head National more like 35-45 minutes from Savannah.  Atlantic and Heron both resort style courses w better practice facilities than HHN.

RTJ in PD is no better than Atlantic Dunes or Heron Point IMO.  Just a different resort course.

@T-MAC or anyone else care to chime in? What's the best course you'd recommend outside of Sea Pines?

My family does HHI every year.  We have done all three Sea Pines courses to the point that we're not opposed to trying something else for the sake of change.

So this year we're doing HHN and Palmetto Dunes Fazio as a change of pace.  I have done RTJ Dunes, and it's okay

I think you will enjoy HHN.  The greens are some of the best around on public courses.  I don't mind the Fazio in PD but I like the Arthur Hills track a little better.
You may want to check out the 3 public courses in Hilton Head Plantation.  All of them are pretty good:  Bear Creek, Oyster Reef, and Dolphin Head.
Across the street from HHP is Indigo Run and their Golden Bear course isn't bad either.

Just got back from 5 days of golf on/near HHI.

Hilton Head National - loved this course.  It was in great condition.

Oyster Reef - I'd rank this one just below HHN

Palmetto Dunes Hills - Great greens.  Fun course.

Palmetto Dunes Fazio - The highlight of the trip for me.  Loved everything about this course.  Greens were SLICK!

Palmetto Dunes RTJ - This course kicked my @ss.  Off day.  18 strokes from sand.  Greens were fantastic.

If you are trying to get away from Palmetto Dunes and Sea Pines, go play Hilton Head National.

I just saw a picture of #18 at Harbour Town. It looks like the grass on the fairway has been  stripped off, or sprayed out. Are they doing some sort of renovation on the course?

To answer my own question, I think the greens and fairways were aerified, and the plugs hadn’t been dragged in .

So you're in North Myrtle Beach then, yes ?

I'm thinking of possibly moving to the area. I've been to MB 3 times for that late Summer tournament & mostly stayed near center MB.

Mind giving some info on the status of relatively inexpensive golf in the area ?  Summer ? Shoulder seasons when the greens fees are highest ? Some courses available ?

Just reporting back my experience from the Island this past week to help some others...

Atlantic Dunes:  Course is always in great shape.  Fairways are like carpet.  The greens were still somewhat recovering from aerification, but rolled true.  I would have liked a little faster.  But man, the conditions and experience at the Sea Pines resort always warrants playing one of the three courses there every year.  Maybe I will hop over to Harbour Town next year, as it's been a few years since we've played.

Hilton Head National:  So this place gets rave reviews, and I think for the money it's a great round.  If I am being critical, I personally found a few of the holes boring.  Straightforward, no fairway bunkers, maybe one bunker greenside.  It tips out at only 6600 yards.  But if you're looking for a decent mid-price point course in the area, I would recommend it.  Greens were rolling very nicely.

Palmetto Dunes - RTJ:  I haven't played here in about 4-5 years.  Forgot a lot about the place, the only holes that i vividly remembered were basically 8 (along the road), and then 10-13 (because it all opens up around the water).  I will 100% be going back next year.  Conditions were B+, the course plays tough.  7000 from the tips.  I personally shot one of my best rounds ever, so that helps I'm sure.  But the layout is a lot of fun.

My updated public course rankings from HHI:

1. Sea Pines - Atlantic Dunes

2. Sea Pines - Harbour Town

3. Palmetto Dunes - RTJ

4. Sea Pines - Heron Point

5. Oyster Reef

6. Palmetto Dunes - Arthur Hills

7.  Hilton Head National

I mean I have Arthur Hills below both, but I personally find RTJ to be a better championship layout than Oyster Reef.  Heron Point is probably worth a replay for me again.  I just can't get over hole 9 man!  A hybrid off the tee on a par-5 is criminal.  That hole is so bad from what I remember, but maybe I need to play it from the tips.  But the par-5 6th might be the best par 5 on their property.

Have you played any of the privates on and around the island?  Secession?  Colleton River?  Belfair?  May River?  CCC?  Long Cove?  Wexford?

Would love your input on those.

Member at Sea Pines CC. Play HarbourTown every Wednesday as part of my membership. Friends and summer reciprocal program at Long Cove, Wexford, Colleton, Oldfield, Tabby, Chechessee, etc.

RE: Heron # 9. You must have been playing blue or white. Play the back tees. Wind typically off the ocean calls for a 225 yard draw into the wind or a high (lucky) fade into a hill that slopes left. There's actually 242 yards from tee to end of fairway but looks are deceiving.

Still, nobody makes it onto that green in 2. Risk reward.  Golf isn't supposed to be easy!
