Desert Mountain Information

Hi Gang,

 

I was hoping somebody could give me some information on the golf courses at Desert Mountain. The reason I am interested is I am considering retiring in the next 5 years and I have just started to research different golf communities. The reason Desert Mountain is appealing is there are so many golf courses included in the membership. Are the courses considered some of the best in Arizona? How is pace of play? What is the environment at these clubs? Any information would be helpful.

 

I dont have to be at a private club and have considered just hopping around Scottsdale with golf. We-Ko-Pa seems to have a decent deal for card holders so I have also just considered playing some of the public and private courses but Desert Canyon is intriguing because of the amount of golf courses they have.

 

I look forward to hearing your opinions on Desert Mountain.

I've played all of them multiple times and know multiple members there. They are all very nice golf course but typical cart ball other than Outlaw.

They can be crowded and winter is sometimes insanity. I can't imagine being able to afford Desert Mountain and joining there instead of one of several other places in the area. I fall into that exact category but I'm not close to retirement either so perhaps I have a bit of a different perspective. I also get that there are six courses and that seems like a bonus but honestly, if you join any of the top courses in the area you will have plenty of opportunities to play at the others. Also, as someone that lives way up north, even I think there's no f'ing way I would live at Desert Mountain unless I was prepared to basically never go anywhere outside of Carefree/Cave Creek.

 

I'm glad to help you break down your best options if you want. I've played all of them and belong to two clubs in the area. FWIW, IMO, there's a 100% chance that if you'd like living at Desert Mountain that you'd absolutely hate dealing with public golf year round here.

I also have friends that live and belong to DM. It is an amazing place and the golf courses are def. top notch as well as the practice facilities and amenities. Pace of play is usually 320-4hrs max. It is great having 6 courses but it also has one major drawback.... with so many different clubhouses, you lose the camaraderie of one central clubhouse where everyone hangs out afterwards. My buddies don't leave their clubs at any of the courses because they are always playing different ones each round. So you are always taking your clubs with you in your trunk day in an day out. Not a huge deal but again you lose that central location. I do agree the location is much further away from most of the action of Scottsdale. Depending on where you live inside the property, it can take you 20 min or more just to get out to the main road. I would look more to living closer to the Silverleaf/DC Ranch area and then driving the 15-20 min to DM if you wanted to join there. But thats just me... cuz I would want to be closer to all the great restaurants, supermarkets, airport, nightlife/shopping, etc. When we travel out there we either stay in Paradise Valley at the Sanctuary at Camelback or the Fairmont Princess. From PV it is about 40-45 min drive to DM and from Fairmont area is only around 15-20.

Non private options include the Troon Card. You can play at Troon North, Boulders, Kierland and a few other tracks. My wife and I are currently looking to downsize and I agree...... DM is farther than I want to be. I prefer the Troon area.
