stiffer shaft = faster swingspeed ?

ive tested this on more than one occasion. whenever i hit someone elses or my own regular or stiff shaft lying around i get around 112 on the swing speed meter.

however when i hit my own x stiff shaft or someone elses x stiff more swing speed is about 118 120, does this make sense and have some scientific reasoning or is it just coincidence?

its all in your head. since you KNOW you have a X shaft your probably swinging more freely and faster, not having to worry about the leftside as much.

why it that so hard to believe.. if a shaft kicks at the wrong point for you it's losing speed on either side of the optimal point...

Totally agree, if your shaft was more reg than stiff, you may gain a few yards at the expense of accuracy. However, I don't see you gaining anything with X stiff at same speed...

 

I hit an EI-70 X stiff driver shaft, but I am capable of hitting it further with an aldilla reg flex (and 6.0 degree driver head)...although the trajectory/direction may be atrocious.

Its should not come as a surprise, but it shocked me when it happened to me.

 

I have always played stiff (ho'ing every driver and shaft out there).

 

SS is 104-107. If I step on it my ss is 112-115, but no consistency and my old fault (the pwr slice comes back from its banishment after two years of steady improvement since I started playing.) With my current swing improvement I have learned to draw the ball and my fault will be a hook.

 

Then, about 2 months ago I recevied a Titleist D2 with a Diamana Blue 73 shaft in stiff, custom ordered (or so I thought). I took it to the range a few times as last couples of month have been very busy, and did not get a chance to play it on course until this past weekend.

 

I was surprises by how long it was (comparable to my longest driver to date the FT-5), and started really going after it. I had record personal drives on 3 holes at my course, I kept fading it consisently in the fairway (missed 4 all day which is a record for me and those were in the short stuff just off the fairway), no slice no hook. So the biggest surprise was accuracy and a somewhat lower ball flight that I had been wanting.

 

While I was very happy, I was mistified at how well I played the driver that day, and had the club specs checked after the game and it turns out my shaft CPMS to a mid to high level X stiff. I had no idea I was playing an x stiff, and would never have bought one consciously. Now I cant wait to get out and try it again.

Happened to me and SOME of my students as well. Problem is that your brain is a very powerful tool, when i really created some swing speed with my too soft driver shaft it would balloon and go short. So somehow i adjusted my speed to keep the ball as long as i could.

 

Changed to not only a stiffer shaft but even a HEAVIER shaft and i picked about 4-5mph of swing speed. this was last year and it hasn't faded this season either. The heavier stiffer shafts allow me to swing at my full speed without the ball ballooning.

 

So can this happen? Yes. Does it happen often? No.
