Scottish golf etiquette

I am headed to Fife in a month for my first trip across the pond. I consider myself to have very good etiquette here in the US and a fast player. But I am wondering if there any subtle things that we do here in the US that would be frowned upon in Scotland. Or are there any things that we don't do here in the US that are more customary to do in Scotland.

 

I did a search and could not find any info.

my course gets a lot of American visitors and I love just chatting to them on the putting green... hearing about their trips etc...

 

In all honesty its the very loud vocals ones, that stand out... Along with the stupid slow ones...

Scots, like many other Europeans, find the American tendency to ask what someone does for a living to be too pushy and familiar. It may come out eventually in conversation, but don't be the one to bring it up.

Don't talk about money

Don't complain about weather and conditions

 

Scots don't tip .. we Canucks do ... they were reluctant but appreciative

While not golf....here are a few tips on and around Scotland roadways....

 

 

...and if you're driving, Scotland roadways use round-abouts rather than cloverleafs and other US-type interchanges...

If you're not sure of your exit, don't stop to look....just go around a 2nd time...

Probably the same things that offend people in the U.S. will offend those in Scotland, i.e. :

 

slow players

rude players

loud players

cheapskates

cheaters

etc.

Never been but sure hope to. I would think the biggest is don't complain about the weather. If it is wind is blowing and sheep are flying through the air, an appropriate comment may be to casually mention it is just a "wee breeze".

just played here tonight... lovely sunny evening 12*C and a 35mph wind... I moaned a lot about the wind but I still had fun!!!

 

everyone moans about the weather here... I am looking forward to golfing in Texas in two weeks...

I played golf with a couple guys from Glasgow. They seemed to understand me just fine but ninety percent of whatever they were saying might as well have been a foreign language to me. Even moreso after they had a couple of post round drinks.

 

I had no trouble elsewhere in Scotland but apparently Glaswegian is its own thing...

Doric, yes that is a whole different kind of strange. First time I encountered it properly was a wee newsagents outside Peterhead, the morning after quite a few 'sociables'. To say I thought I'd woken in a different country is an understatement!
