Hello, I'm seriously confused at some of the swingspeed to distance measurments said around here and i'm hoping someone can help answer me! The question is that the real long drivers here (Idrive400 etc.) say their swingspeeds are 138'ish to 140's and other users have said that their swingspeed is 117 and they say that they are hitting 330+. That leaves me wondering how when I've had my swingspeed measured at 120mph normally and 130mph (if i seriously try and rip it) How I rarely break 300 yards (mostly 280-290)

Granted I've just changed driver (was using a regular shafted driver! now waiting to play my first round with the stiff) but I can't see how using the reg. shaft has lost me like 40 yards?!?!

Thanks

Firstly, many people over-estimate the distance they hit so don't sweat it too much.

Secondly, the shaft may well have robbed you or distance by not kicking in time as it was too soft and also by adding too much spin on your shots which both rob you of distance as it would balloon and also reduce any run out once the ball has landed.

Thanks and I wasn't trying to sound like a whining arse, but i probably did :cheesy:

a) make sure the equip. you're getting measured on is accurate...i've run into that one before.

b) make sure you've got proper fitting equip. you need to be able to optimize your launch and spin #'s to really max out distance.

i swing the club slower this season than i did last season but im hitting it further because ive found stuff that optimizes my launch conditions.

FYI my SS is ~115 and im carrying the ball ~280-295yrds

maybe it's that you don't hit the sweet spot. i can't imagine how tough it is to control a 45" going 130. i will give you a swing tip in the form of haiku:

Throttle back, swing smooth

and you will be on short grass.

Hit greens, make birdies.

thank you, I'll have my first book out in the fall.

:cheesy:

Haiku of the year award...how come thats not a smiley?

Definately accurate, I've had it measured on like 5 diff. machines and a Speed Stik

Im curious if you can swing at 130, how you can keep a regular or stiff shaft in the park???

agreed...you're gonna be pushing the upper limits of X at 130

The reason is that I'll basically NEVER hit 130 when I'm playing that's my absolute max ie. Me trying to swing the crap out of it with no form.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6qS-kxGqx-o

Here's me getting 125mph on the speed stik, I've also got 130mph on that. I'll send a pic of the reader aswell. I've only been playing golf properly for over a year but I'm a high level tennis player so swing the club at speeds isn't too difficult

EDIT: I look well fat in the vid. I'm 15 6'2.5 and 11st 10 (at my heaviest)

Ifyou'd like I'll upload another vid I have of me swinging my Stiff shaft in my garden (not fully just a mess about) to see how close to "parallel".

I think he was just saying a 45 inch Golfing shaft, rather than a Regular Flex. I think.

A Longdrive shaft at 48 inches is much harder to Golf with than a 45 inch.

I swing in the high 120's on the 45 incher with an X flex, or Stiff when my back is tight. Its not about the SS but impact. There are some hitters out there who swing way out of their shoes on the course, and they hit like 260-280, some of them even have SS in the 120's. Its all about contact. I believe.

I swing in the 120's and carry around 300-320. Depending on how I connect.

And No, I meant a regular 45 inch Regular Flex shaft on a Titleist 905T (That was a dumb one from me Regular)

you're reading too much into ss.. how's your ball flight with your driver? I'm guessing you want to max out your drive with your high SS, then get a lesson from a pro and get properly fitted(outdoor LM if you can find a place). Also you're relying too much on that Speedstik, SS on that usually not accurate...

:cheesy:

from what i could make out from the youtube video, you look like you're all over the place to begin with.

Yeah, I've had it measured on a few different actual machines aswell as the speed stik. I'm not bothered if noone believes me I'm hear to learn and read-up on equipment etc. I just wanted to ask an opinion, I've had the SS measured I've worked out my old driver wasn't right so I got a replacement, I may be getting another replacement in September if theirs something that suits me better. Rant over :cheesy:

I believe when my launch angle was last checked it was between 10-11 (apparently you want it around 12 but idk)

Told ya thats what happens when i try and rip hit, hence no 130mph on a course. My 120 avg. is on a machine I probs don't do that on a course anyhoo

your launch angle is too low, your shaft prbably too soft, and your spin i am guessing is too high, i would put money on that, not much though cos i am poor!

i should say, my launch is a little higher than that and my average ss is 143, probably slower now as broken so many drivers this year i am practically bankrupt. well in to double figures!

117mph and 330plus is rubbish, if you take carry distance and add 10% that is reasonable, neutral conditions, here is a link to the stats from this years open, ignore where the ball finished and look at carry distance, the ground at the open either gave you 100 yards of roll or none depending on what the ball landed on.

tiger woods for example, averaged just under 123mph for his best 5 measured drives on holes 6 and 10, his average ball speed was 182mph for these shots and his average carry was 283.66 yards, he makes incredibly good contact, assuming 10% run, he would be 312 yards,

anyone claiming distance of 330 with a 117mph ss is getting lots of run, playing at altitude, a poor judge of distance or talking pants!

the devices that measure ss all vary so take that into account also, i have had crazy numbers from certain devices that i would never share because they are so ridiculous!

Thanks! And funny you should mention the 6th at the Open, that was one of the holes where I actually saw Tiger drive!

What you need to look at is your equiptment, You need to get PROPERLY fitted. As ExtremeLD said, spin pays a crucial part in distance, too much=no distance, too little=no carry. The Callaway driver you are playing now, imparts ALOT of spin(made for people who have a hard time getting the ball in the air) As far as one of the previous posters saying the most people over estimate their driving distance, most likely, but if you really want to keep the distance you generate, you need to get spec'd out. Forget the speedstix, not reliable when it comes to measure SS, use a vector, accufit, something like that. What you also need to see is "smash factor" also, which measures ball speed in relation to swing speed. Optimum is 1.48 and higher, this tells you that you are getting the best energy transfer from the clubhead to the ball when hit. If the head/shaft combo isn't anywhere near this, it's time to change(again) When I go to my club builder to check my equiptment before a qualifier or comp, I always look at smash factor and spin rate, then make adjustments accordingly, because SS will always change from day to day. That's why I carry 10 drivers of different lofts, shaft flexes and torque ratings.

You are probably seeing a little ballooning (too much backspin) if you are using a stiff shaft. Your right in my neck of the woods with clubhead speed but my smash factor is also pretty high (1.44 +), launch angle is right at 13* and my fitter said I should be at around 11.5* ish to give me optimal distance with the amount of spin I produce (looking at going with a whiteboard tipped 1" in X flex). I have tried different lofts but my best performance is with the 9.5* 905R head.

eh surely you all need to consider mass of the person hitting the ball? a guy who weighs 10 stone but somehow generates 100mph will not hit the ball as far as a giuy who weighs 15 stone with same club head speed. Also whilst I agree that club head speed is important its rate of accelaration that is key. if you hit the ball at 100mph but just before impact are swinging at 110 mph and after impact 90mph you will not hit as far as you would if those figures are reversed surely ?

Remember folks force = mass x accelaration.

uh . . . no. the mass of the person hitting the ball is not relevant whatsoever.

the ball doesn't care about what happens with the club after impact. acceleration is key only in the sense of making a good golf swing.

It's a long time since I studied physics, and even then it was only to A Level standard in high school, but even I know that that doesn't add up. Not unless the guy is on the end of the shaft that another guy's swinging, anyway.
