When playing a round of golf what do you guys track? I am horrible at keeping track of anything but strokes. I have a Game Golf that I use and that helps out. but do you guys track

GIR?

Fairways?

Putts?

Chips?

and where do you store your data? and what do you look for when looking at it?

I am trying to better my game and I feel I need to get a good understanding of my stats to help me.

Before settling on what stats you want to track, I highly suggest reading Every Shot Counts by Mark Broadie.

You'll get split opinions on his work depending who you ask around here. Some guys just don't believe in math, apparently...

But anyhow, his statistic of "shots gained" has taken off on tour, and is a good way to look at the strengths and weaknesses in your game. Much more insightful than simply counting FIR, GIR and putts, etc. If you're interested, I'd be happy to provide further reading for you.

If you're already familiar with his work, I won't keep blabbering :)

I'll note that tracking strokes gained takes a bit of work, but with GPS watches and cell phone apps, it can be done with little intrusion to your golf experience.

Putts and Strokes is all. I'd love to keep more data, just for fun, but those are the only two things that I need to tangibly see at the end of the round. Fairways... Meh. I can name holes on plenty of courses that it's better to be off in the rough than the fairway anyways, so hitting the fairway to me is interchangeable with hitting a target area.. Ontop of that, I'm too delusional to count missing a fairway by 3' as a missed fairway lol. If I say I hit every fairway, then I legitimately did, but counting a missed fairway against myself isn't always a good way to gauge the quality of the shot, or even the intended placement, if that makes sense.. As, for example, the 18th at my home course, I will intentionally play down the right hand side (par 5) especially on my approach shot for the best angle to the pin.

Greens are important and are the 3rd thing I would track outside of strokes and putts, but tracking my putts is a pretty good indicator of whether I've hit the green or not. One putt pars are self explanatory of missing the green and getting up and down, two putt pars mean I hit the green, etc..

Sand saves: I'm relatively decent out of the sand and can usually rest assured that I'll be within a reasonable make range (5'-10') on a medium length, greenside bunker shot. Not all bunker shots are equal, so I made sure to practice enough to be competent, but if I were going to be detailed enough to break down the up and downs, I'd want to break down the up and downs from certain distances as well.. A 10 yard shot is way different than a 30 yard shot, but they can both be "greenside" bunker shots, although one is a much larger miss than the other, obviously.

I'm not advocating for taking less data. I just know well enough weather my short game, driving, etc. is on or off. Maybe if I was more consistent, then I'd be more interested to really find where that hole in my game is, but I know that I need to get better all around, so I take it from there lol.

Strokes, putts, fairways and GIRs. I'm more lax when it comes to fairways and girs but I always keep track of putts in addition to strokes. Fairways and GIRs is just how I gauge my accuracy for the day and after the round I rarely look at those stats to see how many I hit. Putts I like to keep because I know it is currently not as strong as what it used to be and it's something I really want to improve on.

strokes

Putts

fairway (hit, L, R, Short or Long)

If you track strokes and putts you can calculate GIR, so no need to think about it during a round.

Edit: also whether I had a drop/ob/water/sand

Pretty easy to track on a scorecard

I use one square for strokes

One square for fwy and penalties

One square for putts.

I've found that keeping track of my stats has been tremendously helpful in terms of seeing improvement in my game.

I plug my data into the Grint either during or after the round.

Then I take that data and put it into a spreadsheet that I have a ton of graphs and stats showing my trends.

I can't tell you how much this has helped me, although it seems rediculous.

For the longest time it felt like my scores were not getting better, but after looking at the data, they definitely were, it was just at a slow pace so as to be relatively imperceptable.

I can see using my graphs that my average triple bogeys are trending down while my doubles, singles and pars were trending up. It gave me confidence and hope.

And sometimes on the course I can stop and bring myself into the moment and think about just turning this hole into a double rather than a triple or worse so I can keep my trend going.

I use the golf.com handicap tracker to keep track of my stats. It tracks a bunch of stats including: strokes, FW's, GIR's. putts, up & downs, sand saves and penalties. You can also track which club you used and the direction you missed the fairway (left, right, short, long or just hit or miss).

i have an excel sheet that i need to input strokes, puts, and fairways hit, and it will also spit out, up and down %, GIR % fairway %, strokes gained in different areas, handicap trends, and tons of other s***. all i need to do is track putts and strokes and if i want fairways it it does the rest. Quite interesting

This may sound odd but I don't actually track FIRS &GIRs. What I track is whether or not I executed what I intended. I put it under the stroke box. I use a straight arrow in the direction I missed from the intended line and a curved arrow for the same if I need to indicate a shot shape error.

I track "Putts", ie, but anytime I use the putter. I may add add a letter for OB or Hazard etc. This is all so that I can gauge course management issues and/or common shot errors to be recognized and addressed. The point is to know what needs work and hopefully why and take that to the range.

I track nothing (not even score).

Game golf has really helped with being able to focus on golf, and ignoring any type of tracking. It's pretty simple to just recall each shot later that day, when you are editing the game golf data.

I like Game golf but i have not used it. i got the new counter balance putters grip and now i don't have a place to put the putter tag.

DECADE is by far the best app. If you are serious about improving this is the only way I would go. It does strokes gained for you. It keeps track of your game for you, you just have to input your round.

Fairways, GIR, and putts don't tell near enough about your game. I don't even track them, again I let DECADE do it for me but how do you know if your driving is the problem?

I hit 54% of my fairways but the driving is the best part of my game. I'm a +3 handicap and I drive it better than guys that have a scoring average of 68 or better, but I don't make near enough putts outside of 15'. So I work on that part of my game. When It gets to where I want it to be my scoring average will drop and I'll work on the next part of my game that will lower my scoring average. If you looked at my FW percentage only you would think that I should work on that. But I'm rarely blocked by trees, and take very few penalties off of the tee so I don't work on it.

Bottom line is this, DECADE will track everything for you, show you what to work on that is directly effecting your scoring average.

This is a fine suggestion and as mentioned it takes some work. An easier alternative to writing distance and club from every shot throughout a round (and reading Every Shot Counts) is to record:

Fairways

GIR

Putts

Impeded Strokes

15/5 Score

This approach is mentioned by Richie3Jack and the impeded/15/5 Score really help to determine how the round went. He has a cheap book on this and myths of golf statistics that is highly worth reading (see here). It's also listed on this forum many times and blogged here on gWRX.

Course, rating, slope, score, ESC, differential, index, anti-index, GIR, FIR, putts, 3-putts, pars-or-better, birdies-or-better, penalties, and points (GIR + FIR + Pars-or-better).

Once I have enough data, I also do some more advanced analysis and look at superlatives, standard deviations, charts, etc.

I'm insane for golf stats.

Strokes, putts, fairways (and directional misses), GIRs and penalties. I enter it into my golfpad gps app, and it tracks all the basic stats for me. I'd like to track distance from pin on approach shots, but I don't have the tech for that at the moment.

Sony Smartwatch 3. Bought one used for $70 online. It has a built in GPS that works with GolfPad. I am set to test it out this Spring. Since the GPS is in the watch, you can leave your phone in the bag.

Also, you can input your shots using the watch. Again, so phone can stay in the bag. My goal is to track distances for all my full shots. I'm not sure how good the accuracy is on putts, so I may just track those in a notepad.

Wow. That's awesome. Let me know how it works, since I was thinking that was exactly what I needed. Right now I use a Garmin S3 for front middle back and driver length, but I was wondering if there was a way to get all the Game Golf type of info on a single watch. I have an old Pebble watch that I never really bothered to use that is supposed to work with Golfpad, but I'm not sure what type of functions it has with such an antiquated smartwatch.
