Cleveland CG12

Recommended Posts

The Cleveland CG12 combines classic wedge design with advanced manufacturing processes. On each CG12 wedge, the grooves are milled to maximum conforming dimensions using a proprietary CNC mill bit to create envelope-stretching geometry. To improve shot consistency, the new groove geometry was coupled with an innovative plating process - making ZIP Grooves Cleveland Golf's most consistent, precise, and visible wedge technology to date.

CG12 SPIN CONTROL

Introducing ZIP Grooves™ from Cleveland® Golf—the latest envelope-stretching technology from the #1 wedge in golf. This breakthrough technology for the CG12™ wedge features consistent milling of each groove to maximum conforming dimensions. The absolute integrity of these grooves is maintained by the application of a proprietary coating to each groove for protection during the face sandblasting process. The resulting ZIP Grooves are pristine and shiny, Cleveland's biggest and most precisely milled ever. Bring on the zip. Bring on the spin. Bring on the game.

I just bought a 60 deg cg10 and a 54 deg cg12. The 12 had a much firmer feel than the 10, so if you are a cleveland guy, that might take some getting used to. however, the major spin is awesome. the only drawback of the club is that the ball spins so much, that i cant play a bump and run shot with the club, which is a shot that i use a lot. the reason for this is simply that the ball spins too damn much. That is why i gave the club a 4 instead of a 5

I have posted on this topic as well, but I love em so much I can't help posting again.

These are the best wedges I have played. When I bought these hit them on my home course, with the balls I usually play with side by side with MPR and Volkey SM. CG12 were the best for sure. They spin enough, but not to much to keep me from getting to a back pin. Also they take a bit of getting used to, I had to trust the spin would be there and aim right at it with the correct yardage. Once I knew they would spin, I am way more aggressive than I ever was with the previous wedges.

Try them out, I think you'll like them.

I have hit the stick 6 times in the past 5 rounds I have played with them (some the golf god's were nice, others they screwed me!) but that is taking dead aim. I love it.

I'm a wedge-a-holic with many sets of wedges including three sets of tour wedges. In terms of spin these are the best on the market. They almost never spin too much or shred balls like the SM Vokeys. They spin a little less than the Tour TM RAC's which means they almost spin perfect for drop and stop performance while being much tighter than the TM's. As far as dispersion, it is between the SM's and the CG-12's with the X Tours right in the mix. The X Tours are great, but the PM MD grind is for experts only.

The X Tour's, SM's and CG-12's each perform great in a number of respects, but in terms of overall consistency, feel and accuracy, I think the CG-12 is leading the current pack.

I have bought and experimented with several different types of wedges over the past few years. I recently bought and tried CG12 54.12, 56.10, and 60.10 wedges in black pearl finish. I have been using the Callaway X-Tour 54.13 and 60.11 PM wedges, and before that, 56.10 and 60.08 Vokey wedges. I had pretty good luck with the Vokey wedges other than that the faces and grooves didn't hold up very well with the amount of practice I do. The X-Tours fared better than the Vokeys in that respect and I liked the X-Tours a little better over all, even though they are harder on golf balls and the PM grind puts a LOT of spin on a golf ball. I decided to give the CG12's a try mainly to compare them to the X-Tour and Vokey wedges. I spent the most time with the CG12 60.10. What impresses me the most about the CG12 is that I am able to hit the ball on a higher and more consistent trajectory with the CG12, even on slight miss hits. I did a shot by shot comparison between the X-Tour and the CG12 and found that I was quite a bit less consistent with the X-Tour and the Vokey too for that matter. The the X-Tour and the Vokey seem to be somewhat less forgiving than the CG12 as far as I can tell. As far as spin goes the CG12 seems to create plenty enough spin around the greens, not as much as the X-Tour PM wedges and Vokey's from what I can tell but plenty enough. Over all I have to say the CG12's are very fine wedges.

I'm going back to 588 RTGs: From a feel stand point alone the cg series are great wedges BUT my distance control and dispersion is much better with the 588's. I have really tried to like the cg series wedges (10-12) and the 10's have been in the bag for almost 2 years but I think there is an issue with the material itself. If you look at the cleveland website or just hold them side by side you will notice that the cg's are 3/4's of an inch longer when looking at the 60*. I think cleveland did this to compensate for the distance loss from using a softer/ lower energy transfer alloy. Cleveland's tour staff seems split between 588's and cg's so I'm probably over estimating the issues with the material but it's in my head now and we all know what that means.

I've played with these wedges for about ten rounds at the end of the season. I played with 588 RTG's for about ten years before that and the first thing I noticed is that my old 588's feel softer than CG12's. If you like to spin the ball alot these do the job quite nicely though. My big problem with these wedges is that they chew up balls every shot, even a little bump and run from just off the green! I use ProV1's, Nike One's or Taylor Made TP's and I scuff every ball. I was going to buy the Titleist Vokey spin milled but heard they chew up balls even worse than these which I doubt is even possible. I think I'll switch to Scratch wedges or I've always liked Vokey 200 series oil can's.

Can anyone give any feedback on the CG14? I recently ordered a set with project X to give a try after seeing all the non-Cleveland staffers gaming them and am thinking about ordering a set of CG12's as well. Was just curious what to expect.

Picked up the CG12 DSG RTG+ zip groove wedges Friday, to replace my CG10s (52, 56 and 60). I was doing well with the CG10s, the CG12s are incredible. I went through a few buckets of ball on the range today and the ball flies higher and just stops on a dime. Great feel. You can really feel the weight of the head of the club. I'm using the Nike Platinum One ball. I have a 9:30 tee time tomorrow and I see if the grooves do any damage to the ball.

I've been told that RC Cola will keep them nice and shiney.

I recently picked one of these up for about ten bucks of my own after cashing in gift cert. from my local shop. It looks awesome. I think the stock grip is a little thicker than the tour velvet i'm use too but I can live with it. For a 52* I get a ton of spin from this wedge, even on shots under 40yds but for some reason they don't chew up my provs like my beloved Vokey. I like the hosel length, and the headweight really gives me confidence that i'm perfomimg the swing properly. I have only one complaint. Although this wedge has the same bounce as the 56* it replaced I keep catching that long sharp back edge. I don't hate it as I am skilled enough to adjust a little. But it is just so different from a vokey trailing edge. I am thinking about having a round bead grind done or just having the last 1/8 inch angle ground for some relief. Anybody done this?

I have two cg12's

Good clubs though i wish they felt a little softer... I should have got the black pearls but they appeared smaller thus I went with the chrome finish I am familar with. I think these would be fine if I didn't play mizuno's with their buttery feel...

On the other hand, these wedges are nice and heavy and glide through sand and ruff which is where I'd prefer it to shine as oppose to getting juice off the fairway.

Overall, good spin, good control, I prefer the feel of the satin finish SM's but they chew up the ball (my dad has some) and they wear abit quickly. For full swings they seem to excessively spin the ball which i also don't appreciate too much.... I'm not a very good dead arm swinger, and I seem to spray the ball when i try to kill the spin... I'd rather just swing as normal and not worry too much about a 5-10 yard reversal (which can be unpredictable)...

So overall good wedges, I think the black wedges are the better choice for feel.

I just replaced my 588's (the 53, and 60--the 56 is still in good shape) with the Zip groove CG 12's (54, and 60). It rained all afternoon, didn't get a chance to go to the range with them. I'll be playing Tuesday afternoon, I'll stop back by and let you know what I think.

I'm guessing, they're quite similar to the 588's. . .I need the extra spin, can't wait to see results!!

I could definitely see some differences in my short game today. I hit some decent approaches with the 54, and chipping and pitching with the new 60 was nice. Felt more confident with it than my old one. I will say, the first 9 holes and just been aerated. So, I couldn't judge any spin. But I did stop a few on the back nine. I'm still using cheap balls until I build my confidence up. Not backspinning, but stopping nicely.

Well, I'm a relative newbie at golf and a definite newbie on this site but I have to weigh in on these clubs.

The balance and quality of these clubs has made a difference in my short game in less than a week!

I'm close to 56 and just started playing in June of 2004, so I'm not all that limber and don't have a 300 yard drive - lol I NEED a short game as much as anyone!!

I've tried a lot of wedges, from the sand wedges that come as part of a set, to Volkey, TM, Ben Hogan, to "gimick" clubs like to Lovett, F2, Pure Spin, etc. Although the Volkely wedges (quality) helped a lot, I still really struggled with anything from 60 yards in with a wedge. I tended to dig in too hard with the Volkeys and couldn't control the direction as well as I needed to, but they were still better than anything else I'd tried.

I picked up the 54 & 58 CG 12 wedges this past weekend and with just 2 practice sessions, a weekend lesson and tonight on the course, these wedges have made a huge difference in my confidence and performance. 2 sand saves tonight and 5 "up and downs" (on 9 holes). My friends and the league I play in usually play the "regular" yellow tees but the group I played with played blue tees further out. I seldom reached the green in regulation but I had some good up and downs that let me play respectably with a group that was about 20 years younger than me.

There's a lot good about these clubs, and most of it has been said, so I'll add the only negatives I can find with these wedges.

While the bounce is lower than most of my wedges, I find that it can "dig" a bit on tight lies. It also tends to twist more than other (heavier or straighter bladed) wedges of the same loft. That's the only problem I really have with them, is the twisting and digging.

All in all, a great club.

have tried the 54 very good feel and looks good at address. Love the black pearl finish too. However very disappointed with the amount of spin it might just be with me but i can't get the balls to spin back with this wedge they stop do one hop then stop. Also no spin on chip or pitch shots. My Taylormade Z TP spins more.

I absolutely love my wedges. On full shots, it's rare that I pull them back. They generally end up within a foot or two of where my ballmark is, which I love. With others, I've had problems with spinning the ball off the green. I prefer to be able to shoot for the pin if I can rather than hit 10 feet over and HOPE it pulls back to the flag. On the short shots, I can get sufficient spin to stop them pretty quickly....same goes for shots from rough.
