TaylorMade Spider Tour usage and comments

I recently purchased a TaylorMade Spider Tour putter in red and wanted to know what other people's experience was with this putter. I have played a few rounds and spent a ton of time on the putting green with it.

I seem to be deathly accurate with my aim with this thing but I seem to be short most of the time. I am not putting on really fast greens - most of them are Poa Annua and at this time of year they can be a bit sticky.

My distances issue may be that the putter is heavier than I am used to and with the soft insert, I can not dial in distance like I normally would with an all metal putter. I think I dial in my distance based on sound - this putter gives you not much sound at impact and the ball does not rebound from the face like a metal faced putter.

The original grip is way too small IMO and I replaced it with with a SuperStroke mid slim 2.0 which has helped it feel better in my hands.

What are other people's experience with this putter? On a fast green, it would be great, but so far on medium to slower greens it feels more like trying to use a sledge hammer to putt in the rough. Once I go above a certain effort level I am hitting the ball instead of stroking it, and accuracy suffers.

Thanks,

Andy

jeffrey r is correct - huge thread available to peruse.

You also might try the Black and the Platinum, both of which have harder faces than the Red (with Platinum being the hardest).

I find they will both translate to a truer roll more quickly for me than the Red.

I own the Black.

I have noticed the exact same thing. Aim is superb, but it goes much shorter than any putter I have used. It's great to make 5 footers, but not so good leaving 5-8 footers for my second putt..

I suspect the problem with distance control is due to the heavy weight of the club head. I'm used to a lighter head and the spider makes me strike harder to get the same distance.

I found the Spider Tour Red to be very nice. I found it noticeably softer than the Spider Tour black with a lovely roll off the face. I would say that the softness of the red is a tad softer than the PING Sigma G line but nowhere near as soft as the Odyssey O-Works range.

I couldn't believe how good the Spider tour Red was from 25 feet or longer. Every single one of my putts were within 2 feet. I had decent results as well from medium range.

What pains me to say is that I really struggled with putts from inside 6 feet or so. I couldn't seem to gauge the pace of them at all, particularly downhill putts with a moderate to high level of break.

I tested most of the current blades as of late and I got best results and feel from the PING Sigma G Anser. I knew getting up today that my next putter was going to either be the Sigma G Anser or a Spider Tour.

In short, I was much better at short putts with the Anser, very similar with both putters and medium distances and better at lag putts with the Spider.

Personally, I think it's more important to have confidence over putts inside 10 feet so I ordered myself custom PING Sigma G Anser with my own specs.

While I'm hoping that I will have a long and prosperous relationship with my Sigma G Anser, please don't be too surprised to find me writing on here within a couple of months saying that I purchased a JD Spider Red.

Based on my past experiences with putters, I'm 95% sure that the honeymoon phase would've been very short lived if I purchased a Spider Tour Red. I think in the long run, I'm better off with my PING Sigma G Anser.
