Kerr apologizes for slow play in Playoff

Recommended Posts

I timed one of her approach shots at 2:50+ during regulation. It wasn't only during the playoff and/or near the greens. She had numerous shots over 2 minutes.

Did you call it in?

No, but I went to the LPGA website and left 'general' feedback on the excruciating pace of the tournament. Seriously, 5+ hours for twosomes? Enough is enough. I said that Rule 6-7 requires a player to make a stroke without undue delay, and noted that close to 3 minutes is the very definition of undue delay. Hit the d*mn ball already.

Personally, I don't care how long a Your pro takes. He/she is making a living.

It's a different story for the hackers though. Granted, I also Believe that you shouldn't have to finish in under 3 hours like some around here.

I was just kidding bud. I just wanted a chance to use hand-kerr-chief.

Oh I got the joke. All good

She's won over 15 million dollars in her career, I'd say her routine is fine.

You must be blind. She didn't follow her "normal slow and deliberate routine" near the end of regulation and in the 5 hole playoff. She reverted to a ridiculously long routine near the greens, where she sometimes marked and replaced her ball 3 times in the exact same location. She took much longer than her normal slow routine on some shots, and those shots turned out to be some of the worst I have ever seen at any level of play (such as putting or chipping from right off the green and not even getting the ball halfway to the hole). It didn't just happen once, but multiple times.

It was obvious to anyone watching that she took so long that she was a mental basket case by the time she stroked the ball. If she had followed her normal slow routine (instead of her extroidinarily slow routine) last Sunday, she probably would have won the tournament.

Other sports have shot clocks - no idea why they can't be enforced more in golf (not on every shot, but in situations such as this). It's breaking the rules (aka cheating), same as brushing sand in a bunker of mismarking a ball. If you cannot hit a shot within the allotted time, then it's not golf, and if you are doing it to throw off your opponent then it's gamesmanship, and should be penalised.

I think her ridiculously slow play during the playoff to throw off Nomura (similar to what she did during the last tournament) backfired on her.

Aside from the fact that it backfired (assuming she did it on purpose, which I don't really know), it's probably not a good idea for someone without a major sponsor (her own Kerr Winery was the only logo I saw on her clothing or hat), and who is no longer sponsored by the firm whose irons she plays (PXG), to be playing that slow when any intelligent person knows that the viewing public watching on TV can't stand that kind of ridiculously slow play. Most pro golfers get paid more money from sponsors than they make in official tour winnings, so its not a good idea to be hated by the viewing public.

For some strange reason there seems to be a contingent of folks that enjoy rooting for jerks. It's almost impossible to find an anecdote from anyone who has had personal contact with Cristie Kerr that likes her, yet, she's still popular and has quite a few defenders on this site.

Yep, I have no idea why she is so popular.

Walter: Tell me Bobby, why do you play this game?
Bobby: I play because I love it.
Walter: Well I play for the money. I have to win. That is why every time we face each other I will always beat you.

Her slow play in the previous tournament worked out better for her and that's when I started to think she was using gamesmanship against her fellow-competitor.

If so, that sucks.

Comparing Kerr to Tiger is apples to oranges.

Tiger brought other PGA players millions of dollars as Mickelson acknowledged. Furthermore, he is arguably the best of all time and no one is going to say that about Kerr. He's also not a slow player.

He said there was a contingent of people who enjoy rooting for jerks. To which I asked the question, I assume you're not a fan of Tiger Woods.

What you're saying has 0 to do with my question. That question wasn't about Tiger's influence, or Kerr's influence (or lack thereof). I asked the question to make sure there wasn't a double standard.

Which based on your response, there clearly is.

She had a title and money on the line. I think taking a bit of extra time for each shot should get her a pass in this situation alone.

The people that's peeved are viewers having to wait and potentially tv who might've had to extend coverage etc.

No, there are Kerr fans who are peeved also.

The fact is that if you go back and analyze the play on 18 (they played 18th hole 6 times Sunday, including the playoff), there is a negative correlation between how long she took and the quality of the shot. Many of her chips and long puts, where she took a ridiculous amount of time, were some of the worst shot I have ever seen at any level of golf. She psyched herself out by taking so long to analyze those shots.

When a player is on the green, or just off the green, and their next shot gets less than half-way to the hole, it's not because they didn't analyze the shot enough. It's because they spend too much time thinking about it. There is a reason why when a kicker in football is about to kick a game-winning or tying field goal, the other team calls a timeout to "freeze" the kicker.

Paralysis from Analysis John Madden called it.

Happens a ton in golf.God knows I've done it enough times.

You make a good point BTW.

And excellent analogy.

Wasn't Kerr's group already fell off the pace during regulation play?

Probably. But Kerr's play on 18 in regulation and in the playoff was ridiculously slow, not just slow.

I believe that I say Kerr mark and replace her ball three times in the exact same spot on the green. What was that about? Plus, it appeared that around the green, the longer that Kerr took, the worse her shot turned out. I wouldn't have had as much of a problem if she took a long time and then hit a good shot. When I say some of Kerr's shots were not good, I mean they were among the worst I have seen at any level of golf, several times not even getting the ball halfway to the hole from just off the green.

Kerr's playing partner Nomura, who eventually won the tournament, was a relatively fast player. I think that was huge advantage to her, such as on 18 in regulation when she very quickly hit a pitch shot from a very precarious position near the edge of the water over a bunker to about 7 feet, and then sunk the put to go into sudden death. It looked like an impossible pitch shot, and if she had spent too much time thinking about how hard it was, I don't think she would have gotten it that close to the pin.
