Played a scramble in some MISERABLE weather today

Recommended Posts

Forecast had called for rain Friday (and Thursday) all week. I figured it might get canceled. Nope, rain or shine they say. It rains all day yesterday and literally all day today.

The course drained reasonably well which was nice. But I was decked out in rain gear and rain gloves, etc etc. But it wasn't enough. We just got soaked. Oh, and they made us play the back tees. Anyway, it was fun for about 12 holes. It was cold and rainy. We were all ready to be done on about the 13th. I was really ready to be done when on the 14th I lost any ability to hold on to my clubs. All of the grips were wet. I was on my 4th glove and had no more to use. I just swung and held on for dear life. Hit some strange shots.

I thought about the "worst weather you've ever played in" thread while out there today. I couldn't find that thread after a quick glance, so posted this. Anyway, this might not have been the worst but was certainly the wettest.

I got home and had to bring everything inside to somehow try to dry it. Fun times!

Oh, and to top it all off I played with some of my Chrome Softs just to get rid of them, and because I didn't care about my score. I really dislike that ball. But I only lost one of the darn things (and I can't even remember how I lost it). It is just so inconsistent and flies too short and is too hot around the greens.

Oh I have two pair of rain gloves. They were so soaked that they didn't work anymore. Both pair. And I tried to keep them dry as much as possible. I even resorted to using my winter gloves. They also got so soaked they were useless.

Which brand did you use? I have the footjoys and they worked like a charm and we had about 2 inches of rain that day

Same. I used to hate playing in the rain. Now i look for an excuse to wear them. Humid, rain gloves, morning dew rain gloves.

Seems like having you play the back tees was a screwup. Few courses do that when it's nice just to speed up play.

In regards to the rain or shine part:

Some courses do a second deposit to hold the course for a scramble make up day. Depending on how busy they are (or a private course that only holds them one day in the week) they might not have been willing. And the place running the event might not have wanted to get into doing refunds.

Just something to keep in mind.

As for those Chrome Softs, just post a BST ad "Free to a good home".

I will pounce on them.

Of everything in your thread that's the one thing that really stuck out to me as odd. (It rains sometimes, rain is water, water gets things wet, etc)

But not liking Chrome Softs? I think you're the first member I have ever seen post that. What ball do you prefer over it?

Sorry to thread jack but like I said that statement about hating them and trying to lose them stuck out.

I was told we played the back tees because of the weather (they didn't want us to hack up the forward and middle tees).

The winning score was 59, which is pretty incredible (if true). I saw the earlier thread on here about cheating in scrambles and had to laugh a little. I'd say at least 5 of the par 4s were unreachable with a decent driver and a well struck 3 wood. I know, because I was striping my 3 wood and one of us typically had a fairly decent drive.

I'm not WRX long by any standards, but on a normal day I average 270 total (carry + roll) with a driver, and 240 total from the deck with a 3 wood. But on Friday, driver was going 230 total and 3 wood about 210 total. The ball was not flying, nor was it rolling. We had 5 par 4s that after a driver and 3 wood we still had to scramble for par. We also didn't even threaten to reach any of the par 5s. And one par 3 required a 2 hybrid to reach it, even though it measured 200 downhill and downwind. I need to improve my WRXing for sure, but it was brutal out there.

Oh, and I've seen a lot of folks not liking the Chrome Soft.

I wanted to like them, and I LOVE the feel. But they balloon off the driver and are too hot around the greens for my tastes.

I keep them for winter golf, but I like the Wilson Duo better. I'll think about adding them to the BST.

Try the new Taylormade when you get the opportunity. I didn't like their feel but their flight was amazing.

Funny you mention the Duo. I am in the exact same boat as you with the CS. I wanted to like them but they just felt too soft for my liking. Definitely a quality ball though. I did the drop test and they were as good as anything in my ball closet.

I am a sort of an enigma. I will try any new ball that comes out seeking something to replace my current favorite. I have played the CS in every tourney I have participated in since late 2015 and nothing I have tested really worked as well for me. But you can bet I will continue to sniff around because when you are a member here, that's what you do. : )

Sounds like you played in the Tad DuPriest fund raiser at Providence. I have been working there for 10 years and have worked this tournament many times over the years. They always have ~100 players for the 8:00 am shotgun and ~100 for the 1:00 pm shotgun. Its the biggest tournament of the year for us.

I was there Friday afternoon from 1:00 to close. I was helping with carts and clean-up that day. I usually work the counter.

1) Playing the back tees was set by the tournament director, not Providence. They've been playing the back tees since I can remember. I'm not sure why.

2) Rain or shine was another decision by the tournament director.

3) It was frickin' miserable out there Friday! I couldn't believe how many players showed up.

4) Kudos for those of you who showed up to support the charity.

Come back and play on a nice day. Contact me via PM and we can meet up for a round.

I was told we played the back tees because of the weather (they didn't want us to hack up the forward and middle tees).

That's the worst to be honest. Bad excuse and bad execution. If at all I would have put you up to the forward or senior tees to make up for lack of roll and soggy conditions to speed up play a bit. That's just a golf shop that didn't want to have to be strong with members.

Or what Hot Rod said and the tournament director doesn't like you :slow_en:

You post sniped me :D

But really.....is there a reason you let them dictate that? Courses I've been at we typically did White tees, 65+ golds, Women and 75+ Reds. Moving people back tees never helps anyone and only makes the winning team look even better to most players.

The course can make a suggestion but ultimately the decision is made by the tournament director/committee. After all, they are paying to use the course for the entire day and if they wish to play the back tees, they play the back tees. As I said, I'm not sure why that decision was made in the past or for this year, but it was.

I'm sure our pro would have been fine with the tournament moving up (he told me so) as it would have made a miserable day a little more bearable for those who showed up to brave the elements. Carts-on-path made it even tougher.

I played in a scramble a few yrs back. The were calling for heavy rains the day of and rain the day before. SInce the rain came in the day before and we had a two hr drive the day of I called the night before to see if it was cancelled and was told it was still on. We played in rain and with about 6 holes left the heavy stuff moved in. Everyone zoomed to the clubhouse including the other three players I was with. I pulled off my bag and finished the remaining holes walking. My score wasn't pretty but I finished and we were the only team to post a score. I figured we had first prize with the only posting but they decided "to be fair" no prizes would be given. I couldn't figure that one out. They kept the prizes and said there would be no refunds or rain date because everyone could have finished if they wanted to because the course didn't close.. I know it was for charity but they could have gave out the prizes even if they were in a raffle. Needless to say after playing in it for 3 yrs and always getting the invite somehow I was removed from the mailing list.

Well that blows. Why wouldn't they take the scores of every team from the number of overlapping holes played? Or at least a stretch of holes. Or if not you are right: It's for charity, raffle off the things and make money on it!!

Hot Rod,

Yes! It was the Tad Dupriest. Great tournament and great turnout given the weather. It was fun until I ran out of gloves and couldn't hold on to clubs anymore. The course was in GREAT shape for the weather. I've played there twice...once about 10 years ago when it was 37 degrees outside, and Friday in torrential rains. So it's hard to know much about the course honestly.

I was surprised by having us play the back tees. That made some of those holes play really long, especially after my 230 yard bombs.

I'm a member at a different club nearby so don't play elsewhere very often. But our course wouldn't have drained that well.

The weather was so nice this weekend...too bad it was Mother's Day (see the Mother's Day thread on why I didn't even consider playing).

This! The Taylormade tp5x is my new favorite over the v1x and I never ever thought I would say that. I get the same distance and feel for $10 cheaper. They spray all over the course just like every other ball I've ever used as well.

I hate chrome softs too. When I went to a local shop to renew my NCGA membership another guy was returning a box of chrome softs saying it was the worst ball he's ever played.

How did this immediately go from a weather discussion to s***ing on chromesofts?

I've played in plenty of garbage weather but nothing I feel is excessive. I have more trouble with raw heat than any wind or rain. I fade so quickly and sweat so much I can't grip the club properly. Full on passed out during a round 2 summers ago. Can't stand the heat.

Just finished a scramble in miserable weather cold blowing wind Our tournament players were the only ones on the course today. Glad to get off the course. Played with this group in the past and one thing that bothers me is that we read the green differently and they were basically pointing to spot beside the hole to aim with the putter for everyone

Too much chirping on the green. I rather that it is quiet when I putt and instead of pointing where to aim just tell which direction of break and let me decide of where to aim based on how fast my stroke is.

It's a distraction for the guys to stand behind the hole and point to an area around the hole I mean really when you putt, don't you like having people away from line of sight ?

I find that on the green it helps that if you rely on first person going to give a good read on the break, as long as the first person is a descent putter Seeing how the ball behaves is real I like to walk from behind hole to the side away from the start of the break to the hole For whatever reason this helps me visualize the roll to the cup better than if I walk on the opposing side I think this is cause I can see different ways of speed to enter the cup from that angle
