I played Gateway National Links yesterday afternoon and it was pretty darn nice. Only $44 for 2 18 holes w cart and the round only took about 3 hours or so.547a48fdc336267b91faf4f74b1627b8.jpg

I played Spirit at Landings Golf Club.. It was in great shape.. kind of short if you play it from normal tees.. Very wide open... Greens rolled nicely and were undulating.. only 40 bucks.. not a bad value..

Pevely Farms was sweet as always.. the day i played was HOT>>> But a steal for 40 bucks.

Annbriar is absolutely the best public course in the area.

Gateway is good if you like wide open. More narrow, but still fast greens, I liked Spirit.

I have to agree with those that aren't impressed by the Bluffs. There's 6-7 courses I'd play before it.

You think Gateway is wide open? I remember thinking it was tight. Could've just been that I was having a bad day with my driver though.

Gateway is fairly wide open. I just played there in late June.

Agree, Annbriar #1 by a wide margin, then Gateway. I don't think the Bluffs should be as low as 6 or 7 though, it's a nice layout and very playable as most of the fairways all slope back to the middle. No homes on the course, and it has some great views. You will hit a lot of GIR there as they are very large.

I saw some people had Tapawingo up fairly high, I would lower it quite a bit imo. The Woodlands is a nice 9, but the other two layouts are not very good and each of them have a couple of very funky holes. #1 on the Priaire, 8 iron, 8 iron on a severe dog leg right and down hill 30' lol. I also think they are pricey for the condition. I would also put Pevely in this category as well, poor layout on a number of holes, never a flat lie in the fairways, to the point that a good drive can end up in the rough due to the angle on some of the fairways.

There are many other public courses to choose form in the metro area, many I play, but I would consider a lot of them as nice neighborhood courses.

All:

Every year I make a trip up to St. Louis for a Cardinals game and like to get a round of golf in with my Father in Law.

So far we have played:

Gateway National (really enjoyed this one)

Pevely Farms

Stonewolf Golf Club

This year we are playing Aberdeen Golf Club.

I feel like we are running thin on courses.

Any recommendations on where we should hit next?

Thanks

Right next door to Stone Wolf (literally across the street) is Far Oaks Golf Club. Great course / layout and was in great shape last time I played it.

My set-up:
Bag - Flex Tech Crossover
Driver - Ping G430 MAX with HZRDUS Black Smoke

Hybrid - Sim2 Max 3

Hybrid - Sim2 Max 5
Irons - Callaway APEX 21

Wedges - Sub70 TAII Raw 50* / 54* / 58*
Putter - Bettinardi Queen Bee #6
Shoes - Ecco Hybrid
Ball - Maxfli Tour X

Sorry to thread jack but, my dad and I were thinking about meeting somewhere between Peoria, IL and Columbia, MO this Saturday. St Louis more on the IL side pretty much fits the bill. We were hoping to not really break the bank(under $50). Is Fox Creek in Edwardsville any good? This might be a little far from St. Louis for a lot of guys, but another one we saw was Eagles Bluff in Clarksville. We dont need pristine conditions, but dont want a goat track either.

I've honestly never heard of Fox Creek. But based on the last couple of posts on Golf Adviser it looks to be decent and is a Gary Kern design. I'd honestly try and play Gateway or Annbriar if I were you. Depending on the time of day and day of the week you can play for $50 or under and they're the two best public courses in St. Louis in my opinion.

Gateway/Annbriar are the best. Far oaks is going to be cheaper. Depends on how many tournaments they have had recently if the greens are too beat up. But you can find great deals on their website, and it is a fun course.

Just thought I would update: We played Eagles Bluff up in Clarksville which is about 30 minutes north of St. Charles. The conditioning was not great(especially the greens, looked like a fungus or they mowed them too tight at one point and cant get them back) but you can definitely see the potential. I posted in the pictures thread that the course has great bones, but needs some TLC. Beautiful landscaping around the clubhouse, fantastic layout, friendly staff, just needs some love. Whoever built the course knew what they were doing, seems like they invested all of their money building it but dont have the money to maintain it to what it should be. My dad and I could not get over how great the layout was and how fun of a course it was to play and if someone could just pump some money into it or hire a super that could turn it into what it could be, this would be worth every bit of the 30 minute drive north if you live west of St. Louis.

Are all the courses in St. Louis zoysia or are there some nice bent grass courses?

The only bent course I am aware of is Gateway.

A few private clubs with bent fairways, but the only public one I know if is Gateway. Love that course!
