He had 21 wins over 19 years and only one major. I don't think most of the golfing world is really going to listen too closely to what to Lanny Wadkins has to say. It's not a bad career but it sure isn't astounding either. Perhaps he is jaded now for some reason though.

And yet he had more wins than all those guys COMBINED.

And when all of those guys finish their careers, Lanny will still have more wins than all of them combined.

Wait, he said Fowler, Na, Stanely, Chucky Three sticks, and Keegan haven't met expectations?

I wonder where he comes up with this stuff.

My vote for post of 2017

Why? It's not like he was wrong.

Can you please post the expectations for these guys? Who ever thought Keegan Bradley would win a major? Kevin Na has an amazing short game but his extremely limited long game and physical profile greatly diminishes his ceiling. He's had a great career and gotten tons out of his game. Other's too please. What did Kyle Stanley ever do to even have expectations? Fowler and CHIII had nice amateur careers but there are clearly other players with more talent than the both of them. Winning is hard. These guys have all done great for themselves.

I would guess Charles Howell III would be the poster child for what Lanny's trying to say. Nearly 500 career starts at age 38, 17% of the time he's in the top 10 and he has two wins in his career. On the other hand, he's just crossed the $33,000,000 mark with his 16th career runner up finish. He's never in the chase for #1, but he also rarely worries about losing his card.

Do you know how hard it is to keep a card? Sure he hasn't won much. But that doesn't mean he doesn't work hard trying to win on tour.

Which is of course an irrelevant fact that still doesn't make Wadkins worthy of paying much attention to.

Lanny's career was typified by two or three-year bursts of fine play followed by a couple down or quiet years. He wasn't very consistent.

Lanny went winless in 1974, 1975, 1976, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1984, 1986 and 1989. I wonder if he wasn't trying very hard in those years, or lacked a killer instinct ... you know, like Rickie Fowler. :)

I have no idea how hard it is to keep a card. I would say it is not as hard as winning 21 times on the PGA Tour.

Howell's big problem is just two numbers 2 and 16. Lack of wins when the opportunity presents itself is the only flaw in his career, but it is a very significant one.

For the record, Lanny's numbers are 21 and 21.

He won the US Amateur in 1970 then won in 1972 and twice in 1973. So, the man did have to deal with high expectations as a young player. Then he had gall bladder issues for a couple of years and his game trailed off dramatically. A win at the 1977 PGA kept him from having to deal with that "best player to never win a major" problem. I'm not a fan, but he did have a very good career.

Of course, it is SOOOOO MUCH HARDER to win today. I'm sure many in this forum would argue that 21 PGA Tour wins and a major championship from 1972-1992 is about equal to 7 tour wins and a WGC for a post-Tiger era player. I think Rickie can easily hit that mark.

Besides Fowler, what exactly is he wrong about? None of those guys have done anything in years, so yea, their careers haven't lived up to expectations.

Lanny is just as wrong as Curtis Strange was about Tiger... dead wrong..

Love how Fowler's nine birdies showed a lack of desire. If only he was born 40 years earlier, he would be considered a "bulldog" and a "fighter".

Wadkins comes off as a bloated buffoon, and then he opens his mouth. The best round he ever played was when he happened to shoot 66 in the desert when Kenny Lee shot a seventy-f'in-four.

Not sure what his standards are. If he just wants players to win 21 times before they meet expectations, then he needs a reality check as if they actually do win that many times at a young age they probably would have been anointed the next TW already. I think it's harder to win now with a much more competitive and deeper pool of good players. Money being better is a good thing, not a bad thing. If it was good then just stick to web.com or the lesser tours even where the money is scarce.

Again, I didn't say he was wrong. I said it was hilarious that he blasted the careers of five guys in a row for seemingly no reason. He was saying stuff like (this is not an exact quote, but you'll get the idea), "This putt has played slow today. Let's see if Kevin can navigate it better than he's navigated his career." hahaha

I just thought it was funny.

I wonder if Lanny would do his old man bitching routine if that was his career. I lose more and more respect for the "Legends" with each of their stupid comments. If you don't think it takes a will to be great to win $33 million on tour without ever losing your card over 500 starts, you've definitely asked your grandchild to "fix your computer" when the power was off.

Haha... that's funny.

Fowler would give his right arm to have bursts fine play and 21 wins. I'll be shocked if he ever gets half that many.

Lanny did EXACTLY what the network wanted: Create some buzz about the tournament. No big names involved other than Fowler. Who wants to watch this crap? Well other than golf fanatics. I fell asleep twice on it and still haven't completed watching the replay..

I switched to baseball game. Then when the playoff started I went for a bicycle ride. I did watch bits and pieces of the Senior tournament as well. Pretty sure I dozed off most of the time. All in all a pretty good day.. :)

One thing I did learn watching the Senior event, in a short period of time I was bombarded with ED commercials and apparently middle aged women get excited when you are "ready" when a rain shower starts or something......aaaand some guy about my age seemed very excited there was a pill he could take that would relieve joint pain so he could talk trash to his son on the golf course.

Only two players of a younger generation have more wins than Lanny - Tiger and Phil.

Which can be spun any way you want.

That's because, either

1. Players of yesteryear are better than modern players. Just look at the record books.

Or

2. The fields are so deep it's tough for better players to separate themselves (Aided by modern equipment bringing fields together).

Sometimes it's not what you say, but how you say it. This certainly applies to Lanny.
