putting string / gadget to pratice starting putts on correct line

I have extreme trouble telling where I am aiming with the putter, even with using the line on the ball it really never looks right to me when I'm over the putt.

 

I'm looking to get some practice time in using a string or something to train my eyes to see the right line and get the ball started correctly.

 

is there anything better than a string line from the ball to the hole?

From ball to hole and also use it on breaking puts. This will help train your vision to see more break and to get it started on the correct line.

I've used a 4ft aluminum ruler, which has a hole towards one end used to hang it. Place the ruler down facing a target, put ball on hole, and putt. This will allow you to see the line diwn the ruler, then work on stroke trying to putt the ball down the ruler.

The putting aid BrianMcG suggested is a great one to help you see the line. I use it for putts 5-15 feet when practicing. However, part of your issue seeing the line could also be an incorrect setup at address. You need to make sure the position of your eyes are over the ball or just inside the ball. And you need to be able to do this consistently and almost subconsciously. I use the Eye Align aka the putter mirror to ensure my eyes are in the correct position. There's also shoulder alignment to consider as well which certain mirrors can assist with. Using both of these putting aids when practicing will really help you see and hit your line much more consistently and accurately.

Take a book where you can open the cover and have it lie flat on the ground and that is at least 1" thick.

 

Close the book and use a marker to draw a straight horizontal line across the front, spine and back.

 

Open the cover and put it on the ground. The straight line will appear crooked to you. So, practice stepping up to the book and setting up your stance and head tilt so the line becomes straight. You'll eventually 'see' the line a lot better.

 

Then, I use a device like SkyPro that can tell if your face is square at impact. Because, ultimately, starting a putt on line while the face is open 2 degrees and an out/in path is still a guess as to why you miss the putts. e.g. is it the face, the read, the path? You have to eliminate at least one of those variables to putt great.

Snap a chalk line, I also picked up the dirty larry golf navigator....very helpful knowing where the face is aimed.
