Mizuno JPX 900 hot metal irons vs. JPX 850

Wondering if anyone has any insight comparing the JPX 900 Hot Metals to the JPX 850 (cast version). I've hit the Hot Metal a few times now and like them, but was thinking I might save a good bit of cash picking up as set of 850's instead. There are a good number of 850 sets out there (NOS), but there's no way to demo them at this point. It looks like most of the 850's have the XP105 shaft.

 

Any concerns with "hot fliers" on the 850's as noted by a few people in the 900 thread?

 

One thing I did notice trying the 900's was a bit of drop in spin rate. Could have been the balls, but even on some shots that I thought I hit well I was seeing less than expected.

I have hit both and have not experienced the "hot fliers" you speak of from the 900's. the feel and flight is much better with the 900's, at least they are for me.

I don't mean to come off as a know it all because after playing 40+ years and owning 45 sets of top of the line irons I realize nobody has all the answers . I think many people who think they hit a flyer or as put here a "hot flyer" simply got lucky and hit the sweet spot. Hogan said if he hit 3 or 4 great shots a round in the sweet spot he felt satisfied. That said sure we all hit "flyers" once in awhile but I think people confuse what a flyer really is , being getting grass between the ball and club head eliminating spin.

Owned the JPX850's but never did like the feel of them. The JPX900 HM's are far superior in feel & distance in my opinion. I don't really have a problem with the so called fliers.

The 850s have a higher moi, and I know it doesn't mean much, but a higher overall mpf rating.

They never got as much love as the HM have gotten, I think most of it was the badge, but they are solid irons.

Similarly to the 850f to 900f, I feel like the difference is negligible

Mizuno has been applying their Harmonic Impact Technology, ie, sound is feel - for a few generations in both the MP and JPX ranges...The newest ones should always feel and sound the best. Many Mizzyites will tell you about some iron from three or more generations ago that got the feel just right, blah blah blah. But this is always a romant enclave involving some tiny MP. Bigger strides are being made on the GI front when it comes to sound and feel. Blades are like Maria from Sound of Music. There's no solving her but there's no putting her down, either. It's a minimalistic romance and I don't have the heart nor the patience to get between a man and his baby blades. Not only are they tiny, they are sharp and dangerous like the claws of a housecat. Divots like bacon strips. Not my bag but in another dream, surely.
