JW Marriott in Scottsdale

Looking to take a trip in October with the wife and was wondering which JW is better to stay at? Going to play at least once but also looking for some R&R time.

Scottsdale (Camelback) is a bit older more traditional southwestern styled than Desert Ridge. Depending on your room you may have views of Camelback Mountain which is nice. Closer location to Old Town Scottsdale will give you more convenient access to better dining and nightlife than available around Desert Ridge. Of the 4 courses on the two properties Camelback has the best one and the worst one.

 

Desert Ridge is more family friendly, more modern, good steak house on site. Some chain type restaurants and bars across the street at desert ridge not as trendy as old town Scottsdale will be.

Thanks for the info. You said it has the best and worse course so which one is the best? Padre is the only one open at Cammelback when we are there

Padre is decidedly mediocre and Desert Ridge is the nice property :)

Ambiente is the best of the JW courses here. You'd want to skip Padre, both courses at Desert Ridge are decidedly better than Padre.

I can always play at Desert Ridge and stay at Cammelback. Was also looking at not playing any of the hotel courses and going up to Troon North or the TPC Course.

Desert Ridge is also significantly closer to both the TPC and Troon North.

I would rather sacrifice driving a little for the better hotel for the wife. Still surprised she is OK with me playing one day.

My wife and I stayed at the Marriott Canyon Villas last year and really like the area. We took the shuttle over to the JW since my son loved the lazy river. The JW is really nice and the wife loved it.

Desert Ridge is nice....I normally book a staycation or two there every year. Camelback is nice too but it's set up more as a villa and not the typical large hotel resort. If your wife likes southwestern gifts and things like that, maybe better off staying at Camelback since Old Town is full of those types of stores and you have Fashion Square Mall right down the road as well which is huge and I think better restaurants in Old Town.

 

If it were me, i would say stay at Camelback and go play WeKoPa. Troon is overpriced because of the name in my opinion and while I enjoy the TPC courses, there are better options, especially if you are only playing 1 or 2 rounds.

Since you are going to play golf elsewhere...look at Kierland too and see if it meets your needs. The nice thing is that it is much closer to the Scottsdale shopping, nightlife and restaurants.

Can't comment on Camelback Marriott, but I've stayed several times at the Marriott Desert Ridge. It's still a relatively new property. Quite a mix of very upscale rooms and more ordinary ones. Definitely a great place with small kids and has a bit of that vibe, but it's not Disney - you can get away from the kids when you want to. A couple of nice restaurants, sometimes some evening music on the patio, good but not great golf courses (Faldo much better than Palmer). The size is both good and bad - you certainly don't need to leave the property given the amenities, but you will probably want to use the valet parking if you plan to go places. I have zero complaints about my stays there and would not hesitate to stay again.

one great tip is to stay at the jw marriott canyon villas. It's about a 10 minute walk from the main jw marriott desert ridge & you have access to all their pools, restaurants... at the main jw. They also have a shuttle service.

 

It's a timeshare but you can take the tour and get a great discounted rate if they have availability. max 5 night stay
