WOW !!!!!! Finally hit by a golf ball.....

It finally happened after playing this game for the last 20 years. Yes I have had plenty of close calls but to say I wanted it to happen this way doesnt do it justice. Playing as a twosome we were partnered up with 2 singles. Both nice guys. The guy had a suspect game but kept the pace of play on point so it didnt bother me too much. Second hole in and we run into a single who the pro shop let out for some odd reason. So playing as a fivesome, we play ready golf and keep pace with the ladies foursome in front of us. 4rth hole in and the guy pull hooks it into the other fairway, manages to hit it into the tree and back into the rough of the hole we are playing. I on the other hand was waiting in the fairway for my approach shot. He was about 40 yards back and to the left of me about another 40 yards away. I was waiting on the other guys also hitting their approach on the fairway when I got the green light to start my pre shot routine. Not a second or two later I feel a big smack to my right lower buttox area. Damn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What was that registered in my mind. The other 3 guys who were watching me at the time all reacted with several 4 letter words that basically described what I was feeling. I was surprised at first then turn around looking at the guy walking towards me. The guy was real upset with himself and kept saying sorry. It was a line drive and everybody kept saying that any higher and it would of hit me in the spine and really think about it could have done some serious damage to the back of my head. Damn is all I kept saying. Luckily it hit my Arse because I have enough padding back there. Boy lucky to really not be any more injured than just a big welt back there. The guy ended up walking off the course after all was said and done. I told him he didnt have to quit. I looked on the brighter side. We ended up picking up the pace and my injury didnt affect me too bad.

Lucky you didn't get hit somewhere that could have been permanent.

Ready golf or not I'm not going in front of the other players. That's not ready golf. That's called Russian Roulette.

Sorry but that wall of text was tough to follow. You saying the guy you were playing with hit you?

I think I follow. I've never hit anyone (as far as I know, may have happened but no ones told me I have). You just can't go in front of someone if the guy in your group whacked you. You just can't.

I was playing a round with my kids a couple years back. My middle child had hit his second and it ended up by my drive on the left side of the fairway. My oldest one was in the right rough 70 yards or so back. I dropped him off and proceeded up to my and my middle ones balls. Normally the FW is the safest place when my oldest one is hitting. As an extra and usually unnecessary precaution we set up behind the cart and watched him hit the ball. Surprise! The ball is coming in our direction. No problem though right? We have the cart between us. The ball appears to be going just left (from the tee box) of us, but takes a wicked hop going straight at us. It smacks my middle one right in the kisser. I'll never forget the bone crunching sound it made. Luckily (the good lord looks out for us dummies at times) it was cosmetic damage only. I expected him to be spitting out teeth. He ended up with a lip that was so swollen that it eventually split, but no teeth knocked out. We were very lucky and it was a lesson that I should have learned long before. I'm very thankful that he was ok. I still feel like a horrible parent because of it. I probably am in all honesty. The only thing I've got going for me is once I'm gone, I think my kids will have good memories of me. They're my life after all. I've got us booked for a tee time at 10:22 tomorrow morning on a top 100 course. It'll be my first time taking them to anything as nice. If you're reading this when I'm gone, sorry Ray for letting you get hit I hope you are a better man than me! I also hope you enjoy tomorrow mornings round!!!

I worked in the bag room at our local club when I was in high school and got hit a few times picking the range. We had a cart with a metal cage around it but the door would not stay closed, so we had to hold it closed. Well I turned a corner and the door slipped out of my hands and right when I go to grab it and ball comes and hits me in the arm.

My dad was playing in a club even and hit got hit in the head by a golf ball from another hole. Tough old guy took a hanky out of his pocket applied pressure to get it to stopped and finish his round.

I hit my sister in the side with a ball from my driver when I was 12, she was sitting in the cart. I felt bad...for a while...as soon as she was OK, I was fine. :) Of course she insisted on going in and I had to because she was driving me around and it was hot and didn't want to walk the back nine!

The strangest thing I saw was two years ago, playing in a member guest. One of our opponents hit a shot, hits a tree, hits the cart and gets stuck between the windshields. My partner and I laughed so hard we about lost the hole! We where in the 3rd flight out of 24, so you wouldn't dream of that happen to guys with handicaps around 5, that is one of the reasons why it was so funny.

But OP, you are lucky that it didn't cause any lasting damage, and glad you are OK.

I hit someone once years ago. I was new to golf and the ball didn't always go straight. I was playing up hole 2 with another group directly to my right coming down 5. Turned out to be my close friend who was also a new hacker. After yelling our hellos we played on. I shanked one screaming right into his thigh. He had the dimple marks and everything. We were young and dumb so we all just rolled on the ground laughing. If it happened now, I'd be horrified.

I've been hit a few times, it's no fun that's for sure.

PSA announcement, if it's even somewhat close always always always yell (and I mean YELL) fore. I'll play with people that are embarrassed to say it, they'll be like "cough uh fore" that I can barely hear standing next to them, which is really stupid...as much as you're able, give people a chance to protect themselves.

yes sir. I was 40 yards forward and directly to his right. He essentially toed the shot like he was hitting for most of the 3 holes leading up to the Event

If he had been toeing most of his shots up to this point..... why did you stand in his line if he would toe it again??

He was sort of off to the wayside shooting through some trees. He showed some signs of hitting the ball every 5 or 6 shots so maybe I was trusting that he finally warmed up. Haaaa haaaa. Reminds me of playing Paintball in the forest and watching the paintball curve around a tree. This time around the damn golf ball did it and sure enough felt like a paintball at close range.

My husband loves to tell the story of having taken one to the rib cage. He swears you could see the dimples in the bruise.

I'm surprised more people don't get hit; I'm always amazed by how many people don't think twice about getting way out in front.

Well no kidding, us guys like to talk about our manly conquests. He probably tells it now like "ha! I scoff at puny golf ball! Ha!" I love to tell people the story of me picking up a coworker during a winter storm a couple years ago. I also place tons of emphasis on getting into the business and getting it open. Long story short (like I do short stories) my car got stuck on his road due to the plow now having not gone down it yet, of course which he lied to me about. So we're out pushing my car for all we're worth, me hanging onto the drivers door and trying to give it gas while still pushing. Anyways I slipped on some ice while still holding onto the door, held on for a split second too long for my age, and split my humerus head into three pieces as I fell down still stupidly holding onto the door with my left hand. Snap. Anyways, my story goes that we managed to get the car unstuck and got into work and got the place opened up (all true). I even stuck around until the next person that was qualified arrived so that there would be no interruption of business. All still true. What I don't mention much (actually this is my first time mentioning it, ha) is that when I fell I screamed (not yelled but SCREAMED) for a good minute or two. I think I may have invented a few new swear words as well. My coworkers tale of this incident may even include words such as "cried like a baby" but please pay him no nevermind, he's obviously dishonest since he lied to me about the plow coming down his street (his story was "it came down but the plow wasn't down" wth??). I also will state that I could have gone anywhere that morning had I chosen to do so. I could have went straight to the hospital but I'm a pretty heroic guy. I wanted to make sure the business I'm charged with wouldn't suffer. Either that or it was the closest place to get out of the teeth of the storm for an hour to collect my wits. You can call it what you want but I'm going to say it's my loyalty to my customers that made me go there. Google earth will say it was .4 miles away and the hospital was 4.9 miles away. I doubt the veracity of that info though. In my mind that morning the hospital was at least twice as close. Ha!

Only been hit once. Was during a junior league match when I was in high school. Waiting on a tee box for my turn when I hear someone yell fore from the adjacent hole. I instinctively cover my head as I only thought the hallmark could be coming from above but instead I take a line drive directly to my hip joint. Turned out it was the oppositions coach who was trying to punch back into the fairway after a poor drive. He rushed over to see if I was ok but thankfully for me it didn't hurt at all after the initial shock.

I used to get hit all the time when I worked on a grounds crew in high school and undergrad. The old farts who take the early tee times don't give a f#ck if you're finishing the stripe on the green you started before they pulled up or not.

I'm not quite one of the old farts yet (damn whippersnapper) but I can reply to your post. I've had several times in the past year where a grounds crew member, being in the direct line of fire (IE directly where I'm planning on hitting my ball or within an accepted "good shot" dispersion) save me up after I get his attention by whoops no and hollering for minutes. In both cars they both put their heads down immediately and went back to work. If I do hit them who's at fault? I know damn sure it's not me. In both situations that this occurred I've hit a horrible shot well clear of them (and my intended line) because I didn't want to hit them. Those are shots that ruin rounds but I'd rather have a bad round then kill an idiot. It's pretty flustering though. I tell them they are in danger and they just don't care? I'm not going to hit right at them on purpose so it basically is equivalent of taking a penalty. Please be smarter than that golf course guys. It sucks to have you in my line of shot without you caring if I hit you. Maybe this is the only time it'll happen but these are literally top 100 public courses in the world, both of them. I'd rather not get worked up over someone not caring if they get hit or not and waving me through without paying any attention. In that case I purposely hit away from them. It sucks but it's all I can do. It costs me a strike every time. It would cost them 20 seconds to just pay attention. I'll gladly hit one into them from 150 if they're watching. You can dodge what you can see. You can't dodge what you can't.

I came close to disaster last year. I have a bad habit of wandering ahead of the people I play with. I was about 5 yards off to the right of my buddy and just stopped. I was looking at something in the woods when he went to hit and it was a dead shank. I have no clue how... but I dropped like a ton of bricks and the ball skimmed the top of my head. He said it looked like something out of the matrix.... I stopped walking ahead and am grateful I did not end up with a horrific injury on that day.

At 40 yards the guy probably barely even felt contact of the ball by the time the OP was hit.

WTH people! Why are you walking in front of someone before they hit? And evidently not even watching as they hit. If you are going to be dumb enough to walk up in front of someone while they are hitting, how hard is it to at least turn around and watch them hit? Use a little common sense.

Grounds crews often do a lousy job at communicating their intentions. Are they going to be 30 seconds on the green and want the player to wait, or are they on the green for 10 minutes and want the player to hit up?

Need to wave up or tell the player to hold up for a minute.

I have a rule nowadays, i never go in front, and never to their RIGHT!

We have 2 hitting nets at our club so you can warm up, i was in the right one, and another guy was in the left, he basically shanked it that bad, that as i stepped forward to get my ball back i felt and heard something against my left ear...his ball! i was so lucky, it literally grazed my ear!

From that day no matter who i play with i go to the left!

Some dude shanked one about 40 yards behind me and missed my head by about 5 inches. Felt the wind/buzz of the ball as it went by my face. Could have easily lost an eye or gotten a major concussion if it had hit me.

I still walk up to my ball if I am in front of a guy, but I make sure to hide behind something if possible, or if that player is really suspect to a mega shank, I just wait.

I tried to catch an errant shot that came at my group from another fairway. It was a line drive with heat on it about head high. Nobody yelled FORE and I instinctively tried to grab it mid-air ... BIG MISTAKE ...

if I close my eyes tight enough I can still hear the wet THWAP !!! sound it made in my palm.... I DIDN'T EVEN MAKE THE CATCH ..my round was over on hole 2

I've been hit in the head twice. First time was 9 years ago. I was a forecaddie in a local AM event when a known long hitter approached the tee. I was about 320 out when I saw the ball come my direction. Lost the ball in the overcast and started backing up. Hit me directly behind the hairline in the center of my head. Knocked out cold upon impact. Concussion and a few staples later and I hit the course on my way home. Didn't remember driving home or playing golf afterward for a few days.

I was also hit by a friend in my foursome in a tournament this year. He had striped one down the center but lost the ball, so he returned to the tee while we continued to not lose position. His 2nd shot on the par 5 went into another fairway and we were greenside when he hit a wedge shot from about 80 yards. We had marked our balls to clear the stage when the ball came out of nowhere and hit me above the ear. Needless to say I went par, bogey, bogey, double, double, double to finish. Best part is I wore my rain hat this weekend for the first time since and noticed the ball mark it left haha. Unfortunately any headaches I've had recently originate in that location.
