Lol touché! What r ur positives on southern dunes? Like give me a sales pitch. I think it’s a good course but not great. I’ve got ranked as my 19th fav course in AZ.

 

I’d give my positives on Quintero but I’ll get blasted on this forum haha.

I'm sure it's been done many times, but for me Southern Dunes: 1) often multiple shot options for how you want to play the hole, 2) related to #1, makes you think, 3) great variety with dogleg left, right, short, longish, 4) nice variety on par 3's, 5) when playing faster and firmer it is at it's best - unfortunately Troon doesn't let that happen much, 6) great bunkering in just the right spots, far less penal than it looks if you play the course correctly, 7) great green complexes with the holes playing quite differently depending on pin location and plenty of curves and elevation changes on the greens, 8) nice practice areas. I'm sure others have other positives.

 

And thanks for asking, shoulder coming along, more slowly than I hoped but starting to play...

Ill echo what Schteeve said Im a big fan of width and angles Southern Dunes gives you that, not overly penal if you are a little off line but play to the wrong angles and it is tough to score. Also a couple holes where to get close to the hole you can play away from the hole rewarding a bit of local knowledge. Good balance not too many long holes not too many shorties. Even from 6900 I get plenty of scoring opportunities when played correctly. Sadly my love for the Dunes goes back to the first month public play was allowed. It was incredibly firm and fast green collars and fairways running up to the greens rolled between 7-8 on the stimp at least. Dormant bermuda fairways in winter perfect bermuda from late March through October perfect bunker sand. It was a dream. I still love it but Troon has killed off so much of what made it a truly special golf course. It is still a very good golf course but a fraction of just how good it could be if it still played as the architects intended. Effing tourists man........

I wonder if some of this has to do with time of day when you play it. Or maybe I just wasn't around when it was truly firm and fast. But when I play it it's always in the afternoon and it plays pretty firm and fast. I can use the slope on 6 and my drive if hit will will make it down the hill on 9, as 2 examples.

I think I have only played SD once since it turned public. It is a different course for sure. Used to be much harder as well.
