Teeing off in Scottsdale - How long to plan for after flight arrival

Maybe. Do you want to warm up? Where in Scottsdale?

I fly into PHX pretty much every single week of my life so I do have some perspective on this. If you land at 11:30am then let's call best case for you getting you bags at 12:15pm. Car rental? Let's assume yes. You'll wait for a bus that commonly takes 15-30 min after you make it out with your clubs. So, best case, you're in a rental car line at 12:45 (you had to walk out + 15 min + time it takes to get there). You don't rent cars very often so you're not preferred and thus we'll add another 30min waiting in line. So, now it is 1:15 (best case!) and you're headed to Troon North. You hit the bag drop at 2:05, park and pay by 2:12. You might have 5 to 10 min to warm up if everything works out perfectly.

Now, I'll flip it a bit. Let's say you travel a lot and have status and are registered with your car rental company. Also, you'll be playing at Talking Stick. Land at 11:30, bags closer to 12:05. Rental car bus to gets you there at 12:20 and you walk straight to the car. Drive to Talking Stick by 1:00pm and you can get out early.

Both of these are best case so just pick what fits and you should be able to determine the possibility of playing that day.

It takes forever to get your bags at the Phx airport. We typically land around 9:30 or 10am, and it is at least an hour to get the bags. We usually get picked up straight at the terminal and have a tee time close to noon or 1pm and can make it, barely. But playing the day you fly in is always a bit sketchy because it is so slow to get out of there, and the days are pretty short typically when we come down.

Not sure who you fly with, but in the hundreds of flights I have taken to sky harbor I dont ever recall waiting an hour for bags. Often I am home (the southeast valley,25 minute drive) within an hour and 15 minutes of landing. If you are waiting an hour I would change airlines.

I concur here just flew back in on United by the time I walked from the gate to baggage claim 10-15 minutes and walked to the restroom and back the conveyor started up and bags were rolling out no more than 20 minutes after we arrived. Never been anywhere close to an hour

I fly AA ~98% of the time and I can say with 100% certainty that I've waited 30-45 minutes for a bag nearly every single time I check one (rare unless I have my clubs). That said, forget the bag check portion. Waiting for a rental car bus + getting there + waiting in line (if you aren't a regular renter) + getting out of it is the major time suck.

For comparison, I live ~31 miles from the airport (very near Troon North), rarely check a bag, park in the terminal and am sitting in the front of the plane the overwhelming majority of the time. I'm often home 45 min from the time I land. Co-workers that fly to the client site located in Tempe usually cannot even make it to the office (3 min from terminal 4!) in that time frame. Rental cars are the killer.

If the bag check is an issue, consider ShipSticks. Depending on whether you are paying for a checked bag, cost is not too much MAY not be much more and you avoid lugging your clubs around airports.

WestJet from Canada. 1 hour to get checked bags minimum every time. But it is the only direct flight from where I live.

Makes sense. Direct flight wins every time. I nearly always travel with my clubs, but usually fly major carriers, normally no checked baggage fee. It must be a West Jet thing. Agree the rental is the killer, however even non frequent fliers can sign up for Hertz club gold and skip the desk. IMO this is worth it for even one/infrequent rentals.

Totally agree but unless something has changed you still have to visit the desk the first time. After that you're good to go.

I travel a great deal with golf clubs. Depending on airport, takes 40min-1hr to get to and collect all bags, then get shuttle to car rental, add another 15-30min wait before in car. Add drive time to course, which in Phoenix can be problematic due to location of airport, traffic patterns and courses, north in Scottsdale.

I have contacted Shipsticks multiple times regarding costs. Always pass because their costs for "1" bag is never remotely close to Airline $50 extra baggage cost for my golf bag.

$15 extra to not have to lug them, check them in is well worth the cost!

NOT remotely close the prices they quoted for my trips. Trips to east coast, TX and Hawaii costs were one way, over $200-$300.

I wouldn't pay a quarter to have my clubs shipped but it is always free for me to check them. I've looked at the services multiple times and I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone that can check for free would use any of them. I just don't find it difficult to get my clubs to the airport and transport them when there.

I totally agree, in fact the times I have shipped them has been much more inconvenient (evening putting/chipping games, playing a random course near the airport) than just checking them and go. The only exception for me is Bandon. I do find it easier to travel there shipping the clubs due to the flights, but they have this process down.

Just ran a quote on their site... From my home in SOCA to home on Maui = $139.99 each way, per bag = $279.88 per bag, rt. Standard carry bags. NO options. The airline charges me $50 each way, per bag = $100 per bag, rt.

Just ran a quote from home in SOCA to home in SO TX.. $139.99 Over night, to as low as $64.99 for 4 biz days ground expedited. Given how much I travel and where, don't have time for ground shipping. ON $100 rt, each bag, or $279.88 ON rt. You didn't say ground and multiple days to get clubs to destination.

Does everything have to be an argument? We all have our personal preferences, willingness to pay for specific services that we value the way we value, perhaps differently than someone else. Jeez.....

Yep, except he left out a key factor that contributed to the low price. And its not available to all locations either. He could have said that but didn't.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi All,

Just to answer my own question. I arrived about 11:10am, no delays. Had my clubs and car loaded by 12:05pm. Given I had time, I decided to book Ambiente for 1:50pm. Golf now confirmation at 12:07pm. Checked in at Camelback at 12:56pm (spent some time waiting to get out of the car rental center). The drive was not that long. So I had an hour to warm up and get settled.

The bad news, Ambiente was baked out and the greens were completely pitch marked and the round was so miserably slow I almost gave up at one point. And I'm not usually one to get worked up about slow rounds but at one par three on the back there was three groups on the tee box!

So, in the end, it worked out. I have no status on the airline or with the rental car company. I only checked my golf clubs so didn't have to wait for additional bags.
