Scratch heads - I play them so as not to wear out the JMO originals - but not much difference.

Square grooves are now illegal I believe.

Haha yes def "illegal" as i sure you know. But I don't play in tourneys and figured if I did go with the older MacGregor heads witch is a stainless and box grooves the life of the wedges would be longer vs the forged 1018 heads since they are a "harder" material (but that thought could be wrong, not sure...?).

I suppose my main concern besides the grooves is the feel of these 2 different head materials. I love my Scratch DW 1018 head's feel wise, but if I can stretch an extra season or 2 out of them that'd be awesome.

So that's why I was curious in your JMO vs 1018 in the feel category.

Square grooves are now illegal I believe.

Square (U/Box) grooves are legal as long as they meet the dimensional properties of the new groove rule. Many OEMs

still use square grooves in their irons. Not sure why this is still an issue 7 years after the rule change was announced.

http://www.usga.org/equipment-standards/equipment-faq-25852.html#16

Do square grooves conform? top

Grooves may be shaped in a variety of ways, including square, "V" shaped or "U" shaped, provided their sides do not converge, they have a symmetrical cross-section and they meet all other specifications under Rule 5c in Appendix II. Also, see figures XI, XII and XIII in Appendix II of the Rules of Golf book.

Dreams are not meant to come true.

Certainly legal square grooves can be installed, but the older clubs have an illegal form.

Now, I don't think the groove rule change that was enacted actually had a significant effect on scoring - so was pointless.

Since starting this thread, I've really gone off the deep end!

What started as ordering a couple of DW ground wedges from Patrick has led to me spending the past 2 weeks working with Patrick to come up with a custom DW hand ground set of irons.

I wanted to carry less clubs and so I am going with the following lofts (so essentially going from 9 irons to 6 irons):

28

34

41

48

55

59

I have a 23 degree hybrid that I can hit 205 (all the way down to 185, depending on the swing) to give perspective on the gap.

The iron shape is going to be based off the Mizuno Mp-5 (similar to the set FairwayFred has posted on the site) with a square toe and a flat topline through the set.

These will be completely hand ground by DW. Really excited and will post more as it progresses.

I am hoping to not get near the same 'deep end' that you have fallen off the cliff into!! BUT, I can see maybe a set next year happening!!

One of the SSC guys did this exact set up, and it's killer. Love the shrunken down set idea.

MM

Would love a lefty set with similar idea of a partical set

Driver

Fairway/Hybrid/driving iron (dependibg on course and conditions)

32* muscle cavity

Beautiful club!

I have a Wilson Staff PW formally owned by Raymond Floyd.

It is like yours, built like a SW but with different loft.

I believe it was Mr Floyd's chief chipping club - and he is famous for being a great chipper.

I think that the new Taylor Made Tour Grind wedges are built like this - similar to the classic Wilson DynaPower '58 SW, and the 50* GW is shaped like a SW - broad sole.

If it costs to be the boss someone's gotta pay it.

It's a scoring club, custom made exactly as you want, by the most legendary club grinders in the game. Confidence, performance, plenty of reasons to spend a little more than a fully tuned wedge works vokey, and on top of it, no one else really has them, so they have that going for them. Why pay so much for a wedge? They are almost disposable.

I'm sure people will be 50/50 with agreeing with me.

Maybe 5-8 years ago it would be considered overly expensive. But nowadays it's really not. Most wedges now are $150 for off the rack wedges. That's Vokey cast wedges, or Mizuno forged MP S18 wedges at $150 per club for off the rack options.

Now if I can choose the exact headshape (overall look, toplline, toe design, grind, stampin ect.) for say $300, with shaft and grip choices you really can't beat it. Also if you know exactly what grind works, why settle for off the rack if it may not fit you perfectly? I know a lot of guys like to change wedges every season so this may not be practical, but having them refinished/regrooved in season 2 and 3 means at least 3 seasons out of a custom wedge. So $300 wedge, plus 2, $50 refinishes/regrooved (once every season) divided by 2 seasons ($300 for the wedge, + $100 (2 refinishes after season and 2 and 3) equals $400 total after 3 seasons, divide that by 3 seasons equals $133.33 per season for 100% custom wedge over 3 seasons.

Also I'm on my 3rd season with my original DW wedges without a refinish/regrooving so it could technically be stretched even further (they will need to be refinished after this season).

But, playing devils advocate, if you don't know what grind/bounce option you need it could be a total gamble, and expensive expirement. If you do know though it's a no brainer.

Nice, very interested to see them!!

I talked with Patrick about a month ago about ordering a 54* and 58*. I was about to pull the trigger but went 718 AP2's instead. I'm slightly kicking myself over that decision. Granted I love the new AP2's vs my 716 AP'2 but they'll always be there, and also able to get those irons at any time and place, but who knows about these DW wedges? I can't wait to order a new set, hopefully soon.

Sidenote, I wanted to get replicas of my Scratch wedges. I mentioned sending them as a template, but Patrick said they have my design features and specs on file to duplicate what I had ordered. That's pretty cool. It seems Patrick's business is just a continuation of Scratch Golf's model, and that's awesome cuz I loved what they used to offer.

The whole reason I went here is Don White. Patrick has been amazing and I got some pics yesterday and will post them soon enough. I also asked about a full set 4-PW also, and I have a feeling I may pull the trigger at some point next year. To own a set of clubs made by DW is a personal goal, just as my Tad Moore that I got from Tad this year. He doesn't make a ton anymore, concentrating on his Hickory Club business...so I feel honored to get a putter from a legend also.

To be honest...Patrick just does such an amazing job of analyzing your profile and shot making ability, turf you usually play....like 20 questions on the questionnaire and a few follow up questions. I was playing my MD3 S-grinds really well, so he used those as guide and adjusted them some more also.

To me, no question these are worth it. You're getting a wedge made just for you from a living legend. Can't be compared to even other custom clubs.

To be honest...Patrick just does such an amazing job of analyzing your profile and shot making ability, turf you usually play....like 20 questions on the questionnaire and a few follow up questions. I was playing my MD3 S-grinds really well, so he used those as guide and adjusted them some more also.

Great way to go.

Love the MD3 grinds and bounce, and also the rounded leading edge on that head shape. I am thinking along the lines of an S with a little more relief on toe and heel, kind of an S refined in the direction of a C grind, for more versatility. But I think the W grind is a real performer too, especially if you have not played a lot lately. Great bunker club. I like Callaway's W grind more than the Vokey K grind.

Sounds like they can do whatever you want. Thanks for the info. Congratulations on the clubs. So pure, clean and cool.

Exactly what he did on the 58*, S grind style and way more heel relief for the open faced shots I love to play!! He dials in the details so well!!

Why pay so much for a wedge? They are almost disposable.

You are aware this is a golf club enthusiast website, right?

Hahaha. I get the golf forum thing. There just has to be a voice of reason. Even if it is a small one.

I'm with you on this...paying $1000 for three wedges is borderline ludicrous.

I would rather buy these than buy a tricked up vokey that starts at $195 and with add-ons can easily reach $300 each for a cast wedge...and still not get the exact shaping that you receive with these. I play 70+ rounds a year and have replaced wedges only when I want a new one, never from wearing one out. If I get 3 years out of these, they have paid for them selves easily.

I ordered a Tad TM 2 handmade shortly after viewing your thread. Here's what I told my wife . . . In time I will no longer be able to order a handmade directly from a master craftsman like Tad Moore. To know that his hands will craft and stamp the putter is very special. Tad sent me pictures of a few models he had available. My wife chose the head shape and I gave her the choice of stamping. She gets it. Thankfully always has.

Can't take it with you when you go, might as well enjoy the time we spend doing it.

I support your efforts to spend your hard earned money on something that will bring you joy and will contribute to your positive mental and physical health.
