Just absolutely beautiful wedges.

They are truly works of art. Men with his talent are amazing. Taking a raw piece of metal and turning it into those wedges. Definitely a wow factor.

There is something about a nice wedge versus any other club in the bag. Drivers are utilitarian. Putters are also. Irons might look "pretty" but not up to the level of being artistic. But a nice wedge - all different ballgame.

Any tour pros using these? Cannot help but wonder given the high degree of perfection and customization involved in making them.

Thanks for posting that article, it was fun to read. I'm hoping to get another 54*, and 58* ordered in the next 6-8 weeks hopefully. They said he can replicate my current Scratch DW's (which is not surprise, especially after reading this article). Still the best and most consistent clubs in my bag. I just wish I could play blades on a daily basis instead of an AP2 style head, if I could it'd be a no brainer to get a set blades by him.

Awesome!

Did you remember that or how on earth did you find it?

Medic-

Joe Girardi and John Wetteland are on the cover of this particular Sports Illustrated issue-

Don White used to work for Fairway Fred, who at one time was CEO of Scratch Golf.

It took me 16 years to finally meet Don, who now works for Patrick Boyd, who was also at Scratch Golf...

Don and Patrick did not disappoint...

That article is how I first heard of Don White and was part of the beginning of my obsession with hand made custom golf clubs that culminated in starting Scratch Golf.

Ari,

Thanks for sharing that!

Ever since hearing about Scratch and DW, I've been playing these irons/ wedges. Now, like you and Matt70, I'm a very happy customer of BB&FC!! ;)

Don White coming out of "retirement" and his teaming up with Patrick, opens the door once again, to owning an incredible set of sticks!

May it be irons or a set of wedges.

$300 for ONE wedge is a bit ridiculous... that better put the ball into the hole for you for that price.

Really not expensive at all by todays standards.

Some of the modern day, hand crafted, Grinders are $325-$633 per wedge. So for Don's $300 per head, it's not off the mark by any means.

I have 4 Hand Grind Wedges, ground for me, and I'd still consider adding two more from Mr. White. To know that the guy who just ground these for me, ground heads for The Golden Bear, is priceless. Just my two cents.

Patrick is awesome!! I have a full set of DW customs from Scratch. By far the best clubs I have ever played. When the time comes, I will be talking to Patrick and getting new sticks made through Boyd Ferrule. Good luck, enjoy the experience of complete customs.

i have a DW set of scratch wedges as well, love them!!!!!!!!!!!!

If only, if only a lefty set. Been thinking of going to a minimalist set and BB&F would be perfect for the irons and wedges. I have been pkaying my scratch wedges for 4 years, and always wanted an iron to go along with them.

Set would look like

Driver 11.5* (43")

4 wood 16.5* or 14* 3 wood (41", 41.5")

Hybrid 20* or 18* D.I. (39.5")

Iron #1 24* (ez-1) (38.5)

Iron #2 32* (ar-1) (37.5)

Iron #3 40* (sb-1) (36.5)

Wedge #1 48* (35.75)

Wedge #2 56* (35.25)

Armlock Putter

Irons and wedges would be raw finish, DW grind, No offset, Aerotech Steelfiber i110x, 2* Flat. Proggressive CG

Pro Caddie & I teach golf

Driver: Srixon Zx5 10.5*; HZDRUS Handcrafted 63 6.0

Long Game: PXG 13*; HZDRUS Handcrafted 83 6.5

Hybrid: Adams IDEA Super 9031; Diamana 83x

Irons: Cobra KING Forged Tec ('15) 4-PW; Recoil 125 stiff (19*,22*, 26*, 30*, 34*, 39*, 44*)

Wedges: Titleist SM9 50*, 54*; True Temper DG S300 (36 inches) (bent 48*, 52*)

L-Wedge: Titleist SM6 58* or Titleist WW 58 Low Bounce K: True Temper DG s300 (36 inches)

Putter: LAB OZ.1; 0* shaft lean, Gears Shaft, LAB Cord Grip; 35 inches

Since starting this thread, I've really gone off the deep end!

What started as ordering a couple of DW ground wedges from Patrick has led to me spending the past 2 weeks working with Patrick to come up with a custom DW hand ground set of irons.

I wanted to carry less clubs and so I am going with the following lofts (so essentially going from 9 irons to 6 irons):

28

34

41

48

55

59

I have a 23 degree hybrid that I can hit 205 (all the way down to 185, depending on the swing) to give perspective on the gap.

The iron shape is going to be based off the Mizuno Mp-5 (similar to the set FairwayFred has posted on the site) with a square toe and a flat topline through the set.

These will be completely hand ground by DW. Really excited and will post more as it progresses.

One of the SSC guys did this exact set up, and it's killer. Love the shrunken down set idea.

Don White is the master!

Some years back I bought some wedges ground for Jose Marie Olazabal from Dave Wood, former VP of Development at MacGregor.

I always hit clubs that I collect, and loved these wedges.

Dave also put me in contact with Mr Wood at Scratch for a conversation. I wanted exact copies and Mr White remembered every detail.

Over time I've ordered 10 JMO grind wedges from Mr White.

All the logistics were handled by Patrick Boyd, who made sure every detail was correct.

These guys are the best - and every wedge will be a masterpiece.

One comment however - if you don't know exactly the grind, weight, length, and shaft you need - you may be wasting your money with an experiment, hoping you get something that works.

Can you share the specs on the jmo grind?

Lots to list and unless you hit the same style shots JMO does, JMO's exact specs aren't useful.

In general, all of JMO wedges had D 5/6 swing weights, Dynamic Gold X-100 shafts, mid-size grips, and were all the same length.Fairly wide soles (Wilson DynaPower width, but slightly less bounce)

The original wedges cost thousands of dollars to make because Don White would give prototypes to JMO, who would make comments and suggest improvements. The originals went back-and-forth, and ended up having metal welded onto the leading edges because JMO like offset hosels but a leading edge exactly even with the leading edge of the hosel. Great look at address!

For a long time JMO played only a 56* but later added a 60*' No GW - though Don White created one in the same style for me.

He made me 3 sets of 50, 56, 60 + an extra 56* to go with the 6 JMO MacGregor originals.

The Scratch wedges were 1/64" shorter heel-to-toe than the original MacGregor wedges due to the Scratch starting wedge blanks being shorter.

Don White has all the specs in minute detail.

How did youlike feel of the older MacGregor DW vs Scratch DW 1018 heads. Patrick i believe has older MacGregor heads too with old box grooves.
