Which irons would you move to next?

Hi all,

I have a dilemma...

I have always played a set of blades, even when I first started

From Cleveland CG tours to Adams MB2's

Currently I have a set of Cobra King Pro combos, which I do hit really well, but I play off 10 so I do have some bad rounds where I could do with a bit more help.

This whole thought pattern came from a recent trip to San Diego where I borrowed a set of new Callaway Steelheads from the pro shop

The distance gain alone I had from these irons was enough for me to start thinking! Then when my swing wasn't too hot, the forgiveness was pretty amazing!

I am not saying these steelheads were my favourite iron, they didn't suit my eye that well, but I did hit them very well

My question is, based on my current irons and previous, if you were me, what irons would you move to next that would give me that extra distance and forgiveness, but still look as sexy as a blade?

Thanks

I play the King Pro combos as well. I also picked up a set of the Wilson FG Tour v6's earlier this summer. Definitely more forgiving, with near the same feedback. Lately, I've been VERY interested in the Mizuno MP-18's. I have an eye for the blades in 6-PW, 4/5 SC, and 3 HiFli.

Regardless, I think (for me), it will be finding the right shafts that compliment my swing and give me the trajectory and feel I want.

For you, I think the MP-18's in SC would give you what you're asking for

Srixon z765 or z565, or combo them. I play pw, 9 iron z965, 8-6 z765, and 5-4 z565. Great clubs, look and feel awesome. You will probably pick up some distance as well as a good amount of forgiveness in the mid and long irons.

Callaway Apex CF16.

Beautiful top line.

Available in left handed.

Definitely a gain in distance and yet not as much offset.

Forged - so awesome feel. Really rewards good impact.

I spent the better part of my weekend demoing a few musclebacks for my next set. Currently play Srixon Z 745. Based on the OPs criteria for distance, sexiness, & forgiveness, here are my completely unscientific findings.

Distance

1. Mizuno MP-18

2. Srixon Z 965

3. Cobra King MB

4. Wilson Staff FG Tour 100

Sexiness

1. Wilson Staff FG Tour 100

2. Mizuno MP-18

3. Srixon Z 965

4. Cobra King MB

Forgiveness

1. Srixon Z 765

2. Wilson Staff FG Tour 100

3. Mizuno MP-18

4. Cobra King MB

I'm leaning toward MP-18, but was also very consistent with the FG Tours. Highly recommend the OP check out Z 965s.

Edit: Just checked Srixon, no 965s in lefty? No way, sorry.

... You have discovered what many low index and + index players have known for years. On my best days I could play MB's thru a 1 iron. On my worst days a little extra forgiveness is a necessity and on most days in-between those extremes, I usually have a few shots every round I am glad I am playing CB's. While I will never understand calling a hunk of iron sexy, I think I understand what you are looking for. Lots of options out there like Cobra Forged Tours, Apex Pro's and Honma Tour World 737V to name a few.

Great to read what you have found out

Surprised to hear your findings with the Wilsons. I know those guys make some unreal irons, but those FG Tour 100s are true blades? Aren't they? But they were that forgiving?

I just checked online, looks like they only make the FG tours in right handed as well

With me having an affinity for older irons, it would be probably the Ping I3+ or the TM X-300 FCI (or Firesole Forged). But me being so satisfied with my 845s those clubs would have to be priced at crack head addict prices in order for me to game them.

I'm kind of going through this now and I'm all over the place. I am playing AP2 714's right now. When I have time to practice I hit them very well. Unfortunately I don't have time to practice. So I'm looking at something with a little more forgiveness. My smart side of the brain says to grab some G400's and call it a day. My dumb side is saying the P790's are gorgeous and maybe I just need to carve the practice time out. Right down the middle is the part of me that says the Z565's has the best of both worlds

Definitely give them a shot. I have the 716s and they are a great iron. If you can try the 716 and the 718. They are both great. The long irons fly like crazy and are really easy to hit. The short irons are really workable and still forgiving. The feel is great. I was surprised at how nice it was especially since I was playing Bridgestone j15 mbs before I made the switch. I will probably upgrade to the 718s when I get around to it but at the moment there is no reason to switch for me.

Man, I just saw that too, and the RH FG Tours are out of stock too (at least from Wilson).

If your best, similar LH options are Z 765, MP-18 SC, and Tour V6, those are all good looking and forgiving too. Again, in my very unscientific estimation, I'd put Srixons ahead in distance & forgiveness, SC in sexiness, Tour V6 in accuracy/consistency.

This is a really good list based on what you are looking for. I would add the Cobra Forged Tec as an often-overlooked possibility.

To satisfy my blade thirst I have the z965 in 5-P, with the 4 iron in 565. If you can get 765 in lefty, those are nice. The 965 is the most forgiving muscleback I have ever gamed.

Since I have blades I like, I also wanted a more forgiving set. Went with MP18 Fli-Hi in 5, MMC in 6-7, SC in 8-P. I would recommend the Fli-Hi as worth looking at in long irons. It looks way better than the H5 did, much better design by Mizuno in building an MP18 line that really fits together.

The SC is a forgiving head that feels great. Got it in Nippon Modus 120 shafts, which only enhances the feel.

The Wilson V6 is a really nice looking CB.... from address it just looks like a straight up blade but is forgiving and feels incredible. The 716 AP2 are nice, too. Good looking top line and shorter blade length with a great amount of help built in... probably the best feeling AP2 yet IMO. Just get the right shaft in them. I play the Srixon 745s and are by far the best irons I have played to date, but they can look a little chunkier than most in their category from the top.... they do offer a TON of forgiveness though and feel like a forged club should feel. I do love my 695s... but the distance help from the 745s is still a really strong attribute, don't get as much from the AP2 due to loft differences I am sure but it's only a few yards here or there.

If you can find some Bridgestone J38/40 DPC, they are another great looking CB if you're looking for blade look with CB help. Longer blade length can look a little weird but great sticks.

If I were you OP, I'll go all King Pro CBs... that would be the cheapest and fastest step

But if you want to buy something new while undergoing another fitting process, I'd suggest the new Callaway X Forged....
