Test wedges on grass?

Would like to try some different wedge grinds on real grass instead of a mat in a golf store. Where should I go?

Cool place but unfortunately no real grass.

Since I'm a westsider this is where I test before I buy. They usually give you 25 balls with any club your testing and even more if you are figuring it out. Great inventory in store as well with tons of after market shafts.

I used to go there as a kid, it was called Nevada Bobs, they had a putt putt course with a big a** concrete T. rex haha. Got my first set of irons there *sheds a tear*

Back in the 80's it was in the middle of nowhere,pretty much nothing past 75th Ave.

There's also a member here who does wedge fittings out at Augusta Ranch using flightscope outdoors, his company is center cut golf, a few members have used him

HotStix in Fountain Hills. When I did my iron fitting I also did a wedge fitting. Beyond just adjusting lie there really wasn't much to fit on the wedges so it was just personal preface. They had every standard vokey bounce and grind combo, the various mack daddy offerings. I messed around with a few others as well but can't remember all of the wedges I specifically hit (I know there was an Epon or two mixed in there which I hit... I played around with a dozen or so wedges until I found the grinds and bounces I wanted).

Real grass with room to chip, pitch and take full swings. Was also able to hit bunker shots with them as well.

Gotta get lucky or have $$. Only one club I know of in my general area even has the ability to test clubs on real grass. Everything else is indoors on mats. Most of the private clubs such as Baltusrol obviously have this, but unless you are swimming in the cash money, it's not happening for you there.

While I think it's important to hit the clubs on real grass, a fitting on a mat is good enough to at least get a good idea of length, lofts, lies and shaft. The specific bounce and grind is still able to be determined, but it may not "Feel" like it might feel on real turf. Most good fitters are going to identify the guy who swings -9* on his wedges to get into higher bounce clubs, etc.... You don't need real grass to make that call. The things you miss out on are seeing how a club feels out of sand, out of rough... items like that.

Call Center Cut Custom Golf....Mark is awesome...I used him for irons and driver fitting, can't recommend highly enough....and he isn't afraid to tell you to go with a cheaper club if the performance isn't significantly different. He works with you and combines what you like feel-wise with the numbers which is exactly how it should be done. They do have a short game area over there as well and I'm sure he will let you try the stuff out there. Great guy, crazy knowledgeable and really great service.

That seems steep. Must have had some crazy shafts in there.

The vokeys were charged at $150 each and that included them adjusting the lie. Now, I would expect if you are only going there for wedges for it to be more expensive. I was there for an iron and wedge fitting so I paid the fee for that and then some fees for extra custom work. Any custom work on the wedges ended up being free just because I was already get a bunch of stuff done with the irons.

They will probably hit you up for a $75 fitting fee or something. Hotstix certainly isn't the cheapest way to go. But they really do have everything you could want and they let you hit all of it, outdoors with virtually any shaft. They really know their stuff and do really good work.
