PGA vs. LPGA Battle of the Sexes

PGA Tour players vs. LPGA tour players in a Ryder cup format. Men play from their respective tees and the women theirs. If they played 10 times who wins the most? 10 different courses.

I say the ladies win 6 to 4. Their have better wedges games and are more accurate off the tee in the narrow fairways that encompass a Ryder Cup.

Well I was getting ready to rip the OP up but the top 15 scoring averages are close.

That being said if they softened the greens and trimmed the rough for the ladies to get the scores where they need to be the PGA tour guys would rip any course apart.

They just play different games and the more you make a tough PGA track doable for the ladies the more a top notch PGA tour guy would lick his chops.

I'd say the LPGA could make it competitive and win a couple out of ten?

I'd rather watch that then the Presidents Cup. Nobody who plays in that event gives a crap.

General acknowledgement from both tours are:

Ladies more accurate, better technically, better hybrid/long approaches.

Men longer, better putters.

Short game are basically equal, differences are more individual based.

However, using the same iron #, men get more spin on their balls.

Until a few yrs ago some ladies where equal to mid to upper length of guys. The distance difference has gotten more lately not less. Recent LPGA driving leader, Lexi Thompson avg 285yds which is now on the lower end of the PGA.

I'd rather they created a foursomes event. Use two sets of tees and let the pairs decide odds and evens. Call it a fifth major for the men and sixth for the women.

The fall season JC Penney Classic had men vs. women.

A few yrs ago c.2014?, both tours played their US Open on the same course in adjacent weeks on Pinehurst #2.

The LPGA stats aren't great, they use putts per round instead of strokes gained putting. But Inbee Park for example at 28.94 putts for round is clearly a better putter than Boo Weekley for example at 30.42, and she's 6th in the Putting Stats. Putts per GIR, she's 1.734 vs 1.830 for Weekley.

On those stats, Inbee would be 7th in Putting Average.

They have no Scrambling or Wedge stats. But from just general observation, the top Korean women can be quite tasty with their wedges and short irons, although the courses are shorter, if you hit it only 249 average like Inbee Park or 243 like Lydia Ko, then you need to be able to score somehow.

I'd say, there is no reason to think that a random non-golfing lady putts worse than a random non-golfing man after say 10 hours of training at a pro, selected from the 10 billions of us(is it?). Or chipping, pitching, bunker shots or shorter approaches. However, since golf is way more popular among the male part of the population, the probability that the male pro's do better is also higher. Which also is evident to all who watches LPGA and PGA something like regularely.

To make the game even, the ladies will need an attitional yardage from tee, to get seriously shorter approaches than the men, Maybe gents championship tee for the gents, and the ladies hackers tee for the ladies.

I'm also remembering an event that used to be played in early December many years ago. Wendy's classic or something along those lines? It had PGA, LPGA and the Senior PGA playing together. I want to say it was teams of 3 playing.

I can't be the only one who remembers this?

this thread needs a poll.... lol

i like watching LPGA but it wouldnt even be close... give the guys a team format and it would get ugly quick .... if all playing stroke play from respective tees then it would mix up... some men would play bad and some ladies on fire.. But in team event ? nah.. wouldnt even be close

I would actually enjoy this and would most certainly tune in. I think if you neutralize the distance somewhat, which you have to do, then the harder you trick up the course the better chance the women would have (i.e. tight fairways, dog legs, rough extremely high and thick to where it simply is a punch out, lightening fast greens, difficult but reasonable hole locations, etc.)... i.e. what the U.S. Open used to be when it was more about challenging the players and less about showcasing some trendy new course.

The harder and more punitive the set-up, the less factors such as length and power come into play. The average swing speed on LPGA is roughly 90-100 mph. On the PGA it is roughly 110-120 mph. Golf these days is very much a game of power, and if you don't find a way to somehow even that out, it wouldn't be close. The women simply cannot hit the same types of shots the men can. Their craft is just as precise and impressive; however they don't have the power to play all the shots that the men can, and that would be a significant disadvantage with an avg to easy setup (i.e. Medinah Ryder Cup).

Putts per round is the most useless stat in golf. In fact, it's worse than useless since the more greens you miss the fewer putts you will have.

I still think the men are much better around and on the green than the women. That's just based on observation, no stats.

I disagree. Even though chipping and putting don't require strength, strength and athletic ability are a huge advantage. Men are stronger and more athletic and on average will always play better around the green.

Ladies would get stomped on. Even if you give them a different tee box, the best players on the lpga are not long hitters (minus lexi and brooke) unlike the mens game. Their wedge isnt any better and neither is their iron play. They may hit more fairways though they hit shorter, so thats a given. Putting is a toss up depending on the player.

The new commissioner wants the TOC to inclues LPGA and Champions tour players playing a stroke play event.

How many women are even in the field each year? Your fact would be a lot more on target if their were equal amounts of men and women in the field each year. Playing from proper tees would be the key issue and the women would hang. That said the men would win more often than not even then. 6 or 7 out of 10.

The Wendy's three tour challenge was a good yardstick for how this would turn out and it was a lot more competitive than most here seem to think.

We all know this would never happen and per the usual, is just GolfWRX speculation. If there was a real match between men vs women, you'd have one side saying how women can never compete with men and another saying that it's not fair the women are being discriminated against and are forced to play different tees.

This is a big no winner. I think I'd be more interested in Dwayne Johnson vs Charles Barkley skins match.

As an FYI, here are the results from the Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge:

PGA Tour - 9

Champions Tour - 7

LPGA Tour - 6

Interesting read

In the 22 years it was played the LPGA finished third(last) just 5 times to the PGA tours 13 times.
