Going from Ping i25's to G's for 9 handicap?

md1m

Recommended Posts

Over the past couple of years, I have lowered my handicap from 17 to 9. I have played i25's the whole time, although have mixed in some other clubs here and there. Has anyone else with a similar handicap scenario gone from an i series to the G series? I know the prevailing school of thought would have been to play G series when I had the higher handicap and then look at switching to the i's now, but I honestly never "work" the ball (other than being able to hit a draw if needed).

I am hitting the i's crisply for the most part, and compressing the ball, but assume I'd be able to do that just as well with G's, with a little extra forgiveness? Just looking to continue improving with the limited practice time I have available.

whatever you decide to do, don't get rid of that set of i25 ;)

Definitely not! I like to try out different things, and know that the i25's are solid. Could even see myself doing a G/I combo set. Not that good with the I25 long and mid irons (many times don't even carry them), but then at about the 7 or 8 iron feel like I can attack pins.

While I can't comment on the I25 to G switch. I did own G25, Rapture V2, K15's, Wilson di11's, Mizuno Jpx800HD and TM Burner Plus irons. Seemed to average around 88-92. No matter what I did i was stuck in a rut.

My buddy was gaming the Cleveland 588 Altitude irons which are hollow body Ultra Game improvement irons. I made the switch and Now averaging 82 which a few rounds in the 70s. 41% GIR. Every now and then I get bold and try more playerish irons and it's a disaster. Never hurts to go "easier".

My buddy made the switch from i25's to G25's and went from a 12 down to a 6! As you stated the forgiveness was much improved and he was able to hold greens better with higher trajectory coming in. His dispersion is very minimal now and likes to go right at pins!

OP, I would try the i200s too, or G400s. I had the Gs, and prefer the G400s on look, feel, performance for me. i200s are pretty forgiving too. Look and feel even better vs. the G/400s to me. ;)

I did the exact thing, went from i25's to the G this year ( not the g400 ). My experience is as follows, I had no issues adjusting to the offset, nor the larger blade length. I immediately noticed an improvement in striking the ball and scoring as well. My best rounds ever have been with these G irons. I feel that when I was "on" the i25's were good for me, but a couple of weeks off and then playing , it took longer to find my groove with them. Not the case with the G's. Very forgiving and as accurate as I can swing them. It's getting close to the end of the season here in the Midwest, and I'm playing the best golf of my life with the G irons.

Awesome clubs and I should have done this switch with long time ago.

Over the course of my golf career I've progressed backwards: from blades to small CB's and now shovels. To me, the larger clubs are just so much easier to hit I don't understand why so many people around here want smaller clubs. To each their own though.

I tried to do exactly this just recently. Bought a set of Ping G off the bst. Took them to the range and had a miserable time with them. I would grab my i200s and hot them exactly where i wanted to. Pick the G up and could hardly make solid contact. Assumed it must have been a shaft or weight issue so I took them home and pulled a few apart and built them to the exact specs of my i200s. Same results next time out. I know it is mental but I never put a good swing on them. I don't really understand it. But my conclusion is to play the most forgiving club you can stand to look at.

We recommend the G400 because it is a lot more forgiving with softer feel.

I have always tried the smaller clubs but always come back to my G series.

Not quite the same thing, but I'm a 9 currently and switched from an MP64-4 combo to an H4-4 combo. I have plenty of swing speed but still enjoy the help elevating the ball in the long irons as I do tend to miss low on the face. I hit these towering 4 and 5 iron shots which feels really good.

I keep the 9-P as a blade, and I plan on adding the 8 blade in when my cap drops to 8 (haha i know thats corny shut up). I won't go any further than that with blades.

So yeah, try it out, it's definitely worth it for the long irons IMO

Like they say forgiveness is a good thing.

Probably time to take my own advice.

Our Men's league championship was last weekend, weather forecasted rain/cold all day, my men's league best ball partner decided the weather was going to be to wet and cold for him and he was not going to play. I went to the course to have breakfast and was talked into playing with another member who's partner had bailed on him. I did not bring my golf bag, but had some Ping ie1's that i had brought for the club fitter to make a shaft change. I borrowed a $5.00 rental set of very used woods/putter and off we went. Rain and wind are not my friends, had a terrible round, my 67 year old new partner playing no name callaway clone gear kept us on the course. My chipping and putting [$2 rental putter] helped out keeping the score to 3 over.

My iron play yesterday has made me determined to do what you are considering, bigger more forgiving irons.

I had me some G's last year and they were so easy to hit, high and straight but who wants that, stupidly i moved on.

Had some Ping rapture V2's 5 years ago that were point and shoot as well, offset in the longer irons and me having a Japan forged crusade, they were sold.

Last night i found some Japan spec V2's [less offset] on the bay and they are on there way to my door.

Also shafting up some Cobra S3's and 2009 Burner's into my spec's.

SGI and GI shootout very soon.

Best of luck in your search.

Definitely nothing wrong with playing the G series as a single digit. Hell, scratch players have been known to game them (a few tour pros have also bagged them over the years). I play to about an 8 and play the old school G15's. This off season I plan to upgrade to the G400's. What I think I'm going to do differently this year is stop at the PW and game either a Glide or Cleveland gap wedge. I'd like to reincorporate chipping with a gap wedge (when I want less loft than my SW or LW) and I'm not a fan of chipping with the G series clubs.

If you want to play a set of Gxx irons then there's nothing wrong with that. RacineBoxer is right. PGA pros have bagged them.

In fact, KJ Choi used a set of G15s at the Masters. A decent player like yourself can hit the sweetspot of any iron more often than not so forgiveness isn't really a criteria. But if you can handle the feel and higher ballflight those clubs offer, then go right ahead.

"Loft for loft, length for length, and shaft for shaft, the ball will go the same distance when hit on the sweet spot regardless how old the iron."

I think it just depends on what your ball flight already looks like.

I can't have any GI or SGI irons because I already have high launch, so those clubs are really a struggle to keep penetrating trajectories with, even with a lot of forward shaft lean on connection.

But your mileage may vary. I wouldn't let anybody rag on anybody else for playing what they want to or like.

I don't buy into the dogma that the lower handicap players should play a smaller clubhead. Some folks are low handicaps BECAUSE they play a GI or even SGI clubhead. Pick the irons that you play your best golf with and don't worry about what someone says "should" be in your bag.
