Think I'm coming down with clamp envy! That thing looks the nuts.

I have a rubber faced shaft clamp that wouldn't mark the ferrule, but might not grip hard enough either.

And the rubber clamp sometimes has too much give when driving out hosel pins. Straight in the vice, face down and resting on top of the vice jaws with leather straps protecting any contact points is my fallback then.

One winter project that may not wait until then. Have in inventory a small number of Neumann leather wrapped grips complete with underlistings. I've fooled around with re-wrapping leathers before. Transferring a vintage Mac grip over to a putter. Its not all that difficult I've discovered.

But a question. Those of you that have done this with some degree of regularity, what do you use for the "stickiness"? These leather straps have lost there adhesiveness upon removal. I've tried grip tape and solvent, that was unsatisfactory. The last go with the Mac grip, used rubber cement and seemed to work fine. A bit messy, but cleaned up after install. Some degree of residue was left on the grip that made it very sticky. Ok for the putter, not so sure about it for a set of woods.

Querying to see if I may be missing another idea or method to the process. TIA.

Yeah Birly, solvent and tape created a gloppy mess of it. Cleaned everything up and started over. The double sided tape probably works fine for a putter, one isn't applying much torque on the grip while using. But not so sure for full swing clubs. Furthermore, the GP underlistings have a molded grip cap rather than a plug. So no means to mechanically secure the top of the grip. Could see them coming unraveled from the top unless glued down firmly.

The underlisting is installed like any rubber grip (double sided tape & solvent). Then spiral wrap double sided tape over the underlisting making sure the starter "notch" is covered with tape. Tightly wrap the leather. The slight overlaping of the leather wrap in combination with the tape will hold the grip in place. The grip won't move with full swings. Finish with a plastic tape grip collar.

I don't think solvent would be applicable to winding leather onto an underlisting. I've wrapped putters using double sided tape, and so long as you secure either end, the leather wrap has stayed put OK. Have not yet put that method to the test on other clubs, though that day is coming.

I’ve wrapped a couple of clubs like that, seems to work fine. Though they are the proper underlistings with the the indent to start the wrap,

Dave Wood added some new projects to his website, amongst which a putter regrip (using the old rubber grip as underlisting for a 'new' leather wrap grip): http://www.davewoodarts.com/Prototype-crafting-puttergrip.html thought some might find it interesting. No pictures of the actual wrapping of the leather over the underlisting so no idea if he used double sided tape or solvent.

My winter project(s) also include putting a couple of Neumann leather grips on my irons (after I have built the storage in our new shed + installed electricity, so I am actually able to work in there (so it may become a winter '19 or '20 project as well...).

Love it. Since getting one of those notched rod grip saver tools, I'm finding it's usually a quicker and easier way to remove a grip than cutting it off. In consequence, I have stockpiled a fair number of intact but old rubber grips and I had actually been wondering whether I could shave them down in order to use them as under listings for leather wraps. Definitely a winter project.

I think these will be my next project , I need to start looking a clubs with a little bounce to help me cope with the boggy winter conditions.

Fluffy, I had a set of "Hal Sutton Grind" Yamaha's that looked just like those and I'm still not sure why I ever let them go, great sticks!

And by the way did you take them down to raw? Looks like it in the photo anyway...

I bought them partially stripped a couple of years back, I finished them off in the blasting cabinet. i forgot I still had them sitting in my stash until recently. It won’t take much to breathe some new life into them. I will probably gun blue and oil them.

My winter project if we get a winter here (sic Tim) will be to finally reshaft and blueprint the beautiful set of VIP blades Mitchell sent me last year. I am also going to locate a 7 &8 iron for the partial set of Hogan Grinds I found in the pile a couple of weeks ago and set them up. Those things were way too flat for me when I checked the Equalizer. If we do not get a bad winter then I will play a lot like I did last year and will not get crap done in the shop.

Hope to test and develop my skills restoring this 1951 Mac Jimmy DeMaret Pace Maker persimmon driver, that I scrounged at GW for $2 last weekend. The head is in pretty decent shape and the leather grip is still somewhat soft.

Oh lorry yes. That Pacemaker will tart up a treat. Not too difficult to get life back into the old leather grips. That'll be a beauty.

I have tried using saddle soap to clean ,then applied Lexol leather conditioner with not very good results. I`ve also used Lexol`s leather cleaner, followed by Lexol`s leather conditioner with the same less than impressive results. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Been contemplating my “winter project”, and I believe the majority of my time will be spent trying to develop a hickory, and/or vintage local playgroup.

The hickory players in NC are an active group, but, I haven’t been able to correlate my schedule to allow me to finally attend and participate in one of their events.

So far I am just a curiosity around these parts, but, I feel there may be some interest if I can get the word out and shoulder the Lions share of the organizing responsibilities.

Have tried to get some free press in a local golf weekly magazine, paper and digital, but, they are unwilling to go “free gratis.”

I have a couple of ideas to pitch some local clubs, and men’s groups, like, me setting up for a hickory challenge on one hole, par 3, so I could control the action so to speak.

Any ideas on how to get a grass roots movement going that could gain traction would be appreciated.

Randy
