Need your opinion- Titleist 718 AP3/2 vs Srixon 765

Hi all,

I recently put up a topic regarding what irons to move to next

I got a huge response (thanks for that!) and the main suggestions were;

Mizuno MP18

Titleist 718 AP2 or AP3

Srixon 765

After some calls I got to hit these, but I have ruled out the Mizuno's as us lefties can only get the SC versions :( and I didn't find them as forgiving as the others.

So my question to you is the following;

I can get both the 765 and the AP2/3 for a very good deal, but the Srixons are about £200 less. I did hit the Titleists slightly better I felt, and the HO inside me is saying go for the Titleists as I am sure the Srixons are due to be discontinued very shortly, hence the low pricing

If you were in my position right now, what would you opt for? The more expensive Titleists that I hit slightly better, and we know they will be around for a good two years, or Srixon 765 that is about £200 less but might be discontinued in a few months?

First world problems, I know! Just interested to hear what you guys think. Performance wise was pretty minimal, I just slightly preferred the feel of the Titleist

Thanks

765 probably won't be replaced for another year. If you genuinely feel you hit the Titleist better then go with them. Otherwise the post purchase dissonance will take hold!

BUT IMO you can't go past the Srixon irons. Feel and performance are excellent. And I would say more forgiving too

Honestly we are in the same boat, the fact that I know Titleist will not bring out another AP3/2 until Sept 2020 is a Huge selling point. I personally am always wondering if the new set will save me a stroke or two, and now I have two full years of crazy ideas like that popping in my head.

Actual they might do . They may bring out an AP1 & AP3 in forged version.

The 716 series was all forged and cast!

you are probably going to get a lot of Srixon fans here, I being one of them. but as one of the commenters stated, if you like one over the other why not go with the one you like most?

IMO i think you are comparing the 765 vs the AP2&3 which are very different irons. The Z765 is a single piece forged "muscle back" designed iron with a very shallow cavity. A very clean iron with no badging inserted or decals in or around the club (name&club series stamped in) . One of the few irons which is a true single piece forging.

The the AP3 is essentially a cast club with some deep pocket/cavity. The AP2 not truly a forged club, forged body steel face with insert and elements in the designed to give a soft feeling. Like PXG does with some of there clubs.

If you are looking for a club with that forged feel, then buy clubs that are actually fully forged, not half baked forged versions with polymer inserts etc etc trying to mimmic the forged sound and feeling.

But equally the AP series are great clubs and I wouldn't knock them back if a set was given to me. But don't buy into you you getting a forged club with the AP when you are essentially get a quasi/semi forged iron. The whole thing that golfers talk about "butter soft" forged irons the "soft forged feel" the "sound" etc etc, only comes with truely whole made forged irons . Forged body irons with steel face/inserts don't compare and are no true forged irons.

If you hit the Titleist better, buy those. Then you know you are not leaving anything on the table when it comes to performance.

All the rest is noise ( a couple hundred pounds, not a true forging, etc etc). If you like the way it plays, looks, sounds, feels, they buy it. The construction of club shouldn't be a sticking point.

You are about to spend a good amount of money either way right? May as well get the set you really want.

I have to agree at the end of the day with all you have said play basically with what you feel good playing with. forged/semi gforged, cast , SGI or GI, whatever makes the game that more enjoyable and a little bit easier!

I have no experience with the new 718 line but I am a life long Titleist guy and I just switched to Srixon Irons and have never been happier. I hit the 545, 745, 565 and 765 and went with the 545 bc I could not really tell a difference between the 4 except the 45 series were a little more forgiving.....and I got a set of like new 545's for $301 and got to keep my 690mb's just in case!
