Golf near Oxford

I'm going on a two week study program at Oxford and will have a little time to golf. What's the best option within about an hour drive? Is there something worth driving a bit longer for?

North Oxford Golf Club is on the city outskirts and worth playing.

Oxford Golf Club.

Kirtlington Golf Club

The Oxfordshire is about 20 minutes down the M40.

Waterstock not to far from the Oxfordshire.

Bicester Golf Club.

 

All the above are in or close to Oxford. Traffic dependent a hours drive will easily see you towards London, Birmingham, Winchester and Cheltenham. Oxford is pretty well situated and with reasonable motorway access. I've played all but The Oxfordshire but that was many years ago and I was no where near as passionate about the game back then.

See if you can get out to Huntercombe for a round at some point. Not exactly in Oxford so you'd need a car or a friend with a car to drive there. Lovely course, very low key with a lot of character IMO.

 

I believe it's near Henley-on-Thames were they have the races every year...

The Oxfordshire can be brutal at this time of year. It is really windy running through a valley and gets pretty wet too. Nice layout, but not the best time of year to play.

 

It isn't a great time of year to play The Belfry, but you could make that in not much more than an hour and nice nostalgia to play The Brabazon course where the Ryder Cup was held so many times and bound to be some deals on to play there

Thanks for the tips, should have mentioned I'll be there in late April so the weather should be much more suited to golf

Have a look at Henley Golf Club - Henley on Thames. As another poster says above Huntercombe is well worth playing, a classic Willie Park Jnr. course.

 

Do both and make a great day of it!

Try Frilford Heath near Abingdon about 15 Minutes outside Oxford. 3 really good courses, heathland so well draining and usually in good condition. Classy set up, certainly worth it.

If you've only got time for a round or two and can drive, I'd recommend the Belfry. Just over an hour (ish) from Oxford and a great historic course. If you had a spare weekend they do really good value stay and play deals. (Note don't bother with the Derby course, play the Brabazon and the PGA National)

Frilford Heath is by far the best set of courses near Oxford. 3 x 18 holes, the original two are JH Taylor designs and over 100 years old.

 

It is only 20 minutes from Oxford and will give you a proper taste of English heathland golf.

I’ve just joined Frilford Heath. I’m looking forward to playing it once the snow has disappeared completely. Great facilities too... brand new pro shop with 2x indoor gc2 quad launch monitors.

You can get to Sunningdale or The Berkshire in an hour from Oxford....

Frilford looks awesome. I wasn't able to find much info on public play on their site. Do you know what days are open and fees? Thanks!

Frilford always have a number of deals for visitors based around how many holes you are going to play. Suggest emailing or calling them.

Rye Hill has pretty much dried out now. It's more a of a 'smash and go' brute but pleasant enough.

My club, Cherwell Edge, is probably within an hour of you (just up two junctions on the M40). That's a traditional course and is also mostly dry (played Sunday and it was fine for the most part).

Kirtlington is my personal favourite course in the area but it seemed to be suffering from water in January so don't know how well it's dried out.

 

Other courses I'm familiar with in this area:

Adderbury (Banbury Golf Club) has a nice layout but falls down a little on maintenance. Built on a meadow/flood plain so probably damp.

Feldon Valley is a gorgeous rural course with good drainage. Unfortunately being out in the sticks at Brailles probably means it's outside your hour travel time.

I had plans to play Frilford but had a friend who didn't meet the handicap requirement so we played Oxford Golf Club. It was really fun. Conditions were excellent, had some fun holes, and put up a decent round with their rentals.
