Reasonable private clubs in scottsdale

We are considering moving to the Scottsdale area. I belong to a club here in Michigan in a monthly dues are around 400 a month. Looking to find a really nice course in that same price range. Something around 7000 yards from the tips and fun guys who like to play for a little something. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Ancala might get you in with some negotiating for a non equity membership around $400 other than that good luck unless you double the monthly and/or have 50k++++++++++ initiation

Edit not sure if this is 100% accurate but it is in the ball park.

The list isn’t accurate but it is close enough for scale. I see it lists ours initiation at $30k but it hasn’t been that in at least 10 years. Probably more. The dues are a little low but fairly close. A couple of the others I know are similarly close. Either way, it is a good indication of scale.

For prices similar to what the OP is looking for I would guess something in Gilbert or Chandler might work. Not sure what Seville is going for these days but it used to be in that ballpark.

Another thought is Gainey. It might still be on the cheaper side. Unfortunately the golf is terrible.

Also, age is going to make a big difference. If you’re under 40 you’ll like be able to find “young executive” memberships that will be closer to $400/month.

Really nice club in Scottsdale at $400/month? I guess it depends on what you consider really nice but that...probably isn't going to happen. That's about what my dues were at Moon Valley as a junior member and that course was very much mid-tier, a few times during the year even that designation would be questionable. They did have an active membership though and finding a group who likes to play for a little $ wouldn't be a problem. It's in north central Phoenix.

Really nice clubs here are expensive to operate and the dues reflect that.

You are definitely out of luck in Scottsdale.....Seville and Alta Mesa are the two that jump out to me....Alta Mesa is very reasonable and the course/practice area look solid though i haven't played. I thought about joining but it's just a tad too far away from me in central Phoenix. Seville is even farther SE. Moon Valley would be the next best bet...I have never played but I did hear they are fixing it up and trying to improve the place.

FYI guys, OP has been quiet but he has another thread up where he mentions having two kids in college. I'm going to guess Jr/JrExec memberships are not going to be an option.

Thus narrowing the field even more.

So, skip Scottsdale and consider Phoenix.

I believe Moon Valley dues for a standard member are at $400/month plus about $50/month in mandatory fees (locker, storage, shoe service). FB min at $400/6 months. Definitely not Scottsdale but probably among the more economical clubs in the Valley. Expect fees for almost everything except walking the course carrying your bag. My dues were $327.50 and my average monthly bill was about $500 walking pretty much every round. If you ride the fees will add up fast.

Anyone headed to the champions tour event at Phoenix cc this weekend?

Was just there yesterday. I'm a bit ashamed to admit, it was my first time going to a golf tournament other than the WM. Now I don't know if I want to go back to the WM. While I can certainly appreciate how the TPC is designed for spectators, the experience as a fan was worlds better at the Champions tour event. If you're on the fence about going I would highly recommend it.

Yes. I was there today and will be there Saturday and Sunday hosting clients since I'm a member there.

I just bought a Loft in Old Town that I plan to use to get away from the cold here in Colorado during the winter months and am starting to look at a club to join. I would love to hear your thoughts on PHX CC.

PHX CC is pretty good. The conditions are great and the club is nice. Holes are a bit repetitive but some can sneak up and bite you if not careful. I enjoyed playing there though

I want to make sure I say this right and you don’t take it wrong because I’m interested in your views and not from and argumentative standpoint but actual curiosity. What holes did you find repetitive? I’ve played a lot there obviously and I can’t really come up anything other than the bunker placement on the left side of a few landing areas.

As for the question above: great country club, fun and solid course, mediocre range. Go play AZCC and PCC both. I think AZCC is not nearly as good of a course but that’s limited to 2 rounds of opinion. It feels jammed in to me. Paradise Valley Country Club is another option. It is a very fun course.

Not at all and perhaps I should clarify. I found the course very enjoyable and very good and could play there a lot. I guess my main complaint is that every hole tends to be very straight. I just prefer a course where you can decide which angle to take, cut a corner, hit iron to a fatter fairway or try and sneak a driver, etc....The back 9 from what i remember is pretty darn good and has some more hazards in play and I do remember liking the back quite a bit. I know it's not in an area where they had a lot of options and terrain though either. I hope you didn't take my post as criticizing the CC as I certainly was not trying to do so....I just personally prefer something more along the lines (design wise) of Verde River, Desert Forest, Aguila, etc.

Oh, not at all. And, honestly, you could tell me you thought it was terrible and I wouldn't be offended because I'm not big on believing that I have cornered being right about what constitutes a good course and what doesn't. I know you're a good player and like design and I'm always interested in hearing other views from people like that. I think your comments are interesting in some ways because I likely felt the same way about the front when I first joined there but after repeated rounds I've come to understand that 4, 6 and 9 are much more strategic than what seems obvious when first playing it. You're right that the back is better and provides more creativity as well. I think I might have even been indicating something similar to what you saw in that 1, 3 and 7 all are straight with the defense being that the driving area is pinched by a bunker on the left.

Also, I agree that I wouldn't put it at the same level as Desert Forest or many others. Solid/fun but not special is how I would describe it but perfect as a second club in that my wife loves playing at PCC but DF is simply too hard for her. She's played enough places around the world with me that she can easily explain why DF is a much "better" course but she's also quite capable in explaining why it is too hard for her to enjoy at the same level.
