Hey WRX!

 

... Looking into joining Franklin Country Club in Franklin (Wrenthem), MA.

 

Is anybody here, a member there? Can you share your experiences?

 

Anyone outside membership that has taken in the golf course and practice facilities?

I have a couple of friends who are members there, so I get to play 1-2x per year. Observations

 

1. They now have one of the best ranges in all of boston. They had a dumpy mat range for most of their existence but sold to a RE developer, and used money (and some unused land) to create a great practice area - really top notch

 

2. Family club with pool, which gets good use, but no tennis. They've talked about adding tennis but golf dominates

 

3. Fun course. 1st hole has a bit of an odd location as it is across parking lot from main club house, but other than that - I enjoy playing there. It's a fine challenge not terribly long, but typical NE course through the trees.

 

4. Good group of members, I believe they have a very welcoming game every Saturday and Sunday where you throw your name in the hat and someone groups you up. I don't believe they are desperate for members, but I really don't know what / how membership process is

 

All in all, if it were the closest club to my house/work, I would be very happy to be a member there and play every weekend

I played in the MGA member's day this summer there. Agree that the range and practice area is very nice. As for the course, it was OK. Greens were quick and rolled nicely. I'm sure part of it was the fact that I was playing it for the first time, but it seemed like there were a lot of blind tee/layup shots, which I do not like. A little more local knowledge would probably help a great deal. Overall seems like a really nice facility.

I've played there half a dozen times. The golf course gets better every time you play it. I think that it's challenging and conditions are very good. The dining room is nice and the food is restaurant quality. The guys get together and watch football in the pub during the fall/winter. I would not have any regrets if I were a member.

How much does it cost to join there? I'm starting to look into a few clubs including Franklin and Foxboro but wanted to find out how much to expect, especially for someone that's never been a member before.

Since you brought it up, I'll remove the post, but it was pretty simple to request the info.

Who knows for sure, but I err on the side of caution on that front. I do believe there is a difference between calling up the membership person and getting info versus them posting it on their website.

 

I would generally bet that equity clubs are more sensitive than for profit clubs, but maybe I am the one being overly sensitive!

Played it once this summer and was pleasantly surprised. Top notch range. Very playable, nice variety, fast greens, solid conditioning. Didn't get a chance to mill around the clubhouse too much but seemed all you need, no frills. I suspect the price carries a decent discount to private / equity clubs closer to the 128 belt, probably a good value.
