Need advice. Ben hogan princess irons ... want to ream

Hey guys

 

Just got a set of hogan princess irons, thinking they'd be suitable for a reshaft, but turns out they're the older .270 or .294 shafts. Super super thin

 

Once I remove the pins and then the shafts I'd like to install the taper tip shafts I have .

 

Can someone help me with what steps I should take ? Also been looking around but haven't found anything..... does anyone offer this service?

Buy some synthetic motor oil, and go to town. Very easy. Each head should only take you about 5 minutes to ream out. Couple turns, remove, dump shavings, repeat.

Also, you don't need a vice or the like. A reamer will walk itself straight as long as you're not pourposly trying to misguided it. I ream precision chambers/barrels for competition bolt action rifles. You'll be fine holding in your hand.

I'm not sure though as the hosels at the moment are smaller than .355 and that's what I want them to be reamed out to. Isn't this product to ream .355-.370?

Did you even read the product description?

 

"There is no longer a need to step drill tapered .355" hosels saving time and assuring that the hosel has been reamed to the exact inside diameter."

 

A .370 reamer would say ".370."

This leads to confusion imho. I may be wrong but the hosel bore of the OP's irons is probably smaller than .294

therefore I conclude that the suggested product won't even go in the hosel. I guess it'd be best to ask GW.

I asked Golfworks and here is their reply:

 

Pretty much dead on, you would need the bore to be close to the size of the reamer before you could even use it properly.

 

Therefore the fluted reamer bit will work but only after the bore has been enlarged.

That is correct ...they are smaller than .335. Old macgregor and hogan jr / women's shafts have an even smaller diameter ..... the product you listed is for getting taper tip to parallel...I'm looking for smaller taper to regular taper

If memory serves I believe those were .300" tip taper.

The product GTPL posted works( for .355 hosel bores-Tapered Spiral Reamer - .355" - Tapered Irons ) but the bore would have to be enlarged first by step drilling.

You'd also have to make sure that the hosel is thick enough to withstand the procedure.

If you can get the reamer in the tip of the hossel, a reamer is all you need. .297/.300 to .355 is a simple job for a reamer. You only need to run a pilot if the tip of the reamer is to large to START in the hossel.

standard machine shop guideline for reaming... under 1/2" diameter hole, leave 1/64" for reaming. Use an "R", 8.7mm, or 11/32" drill to open hole before reaming, but previous post stated if you can start the reamer you will be fine.

No we do not have a reamer that would work with these irons. Reamers are designed to remove small amounts of material. With these heads you would need to rebore them to get them to a .355" tapered hosel bore. I would start with smaller drill bits and gradually enlarge the bore until I get the bottom of the bore to approximately .355". For reboring a .355" hosel bore we end up using a letter T size drill bit which measures .358" and we drill all the way to the bottom of the hosel bore. Next we would use a letter U size bit which measures .368" and we would drill down approximately two thirds of the depth of the bore. Lastly we use a 3/8" bit which measures .375" and we drill down one third of the depth of the bore. With this .270" bore I would start with a 9/32" (.281") and drill to the bottom of the bore. Next a 5/16" (.312") and then an 11/32" (.343") before starting with the letter T size bit. Doing is this way keeps the bit centered in the hosel bore and help to keep from changing the bore angle.
