Cardoustie WITB(s)

Recommended Posts

Well it's December in the Great White North and our course has been closed for a month now. Dog walking only

I've made some tweaks to the set up for next year and I am looking forward to testing the new additions out when I head to NW Florida in 2 weeks for the Xmas holidays (between Destin and PCB). Camp Creek, Shark's Tooth, and Windswept Dunes, here I come.

A little background. Shockingly, i'm going to be 50 in ~ 3 weeks, where does the time go? My cap in the middle of the season is usually 2.5 ish and from early Spring to late Fall can run from 2.1 to as high as 4.9. My cap is a little higher than it should be based on the extreme difficulty of my home course. I'd be a 2 or 3 at most every other course I play at. I get in about 100 rounds a year (this includes about 15 rounds down South during holidays). Played university golf 25 years ago when I was a true tourney scratch, I think I still have the old manual handicap card where I got as low as +0.4. This summer I shot anywhere from 72-86. Three best tournament rounds were 72, 73, 73. My all time personal best is 68.

Like a true wrx'r I have way too many clubs, and I also have a slight obsession MyJoys Icon Shield Tips

Anyways, here's a pic of the current bag (red and yellow on far left) and the clubs that have earned a spot in it.

DRIVER:

I use the 2016 M2 HL driver (forgot a head shot) with the loft turned down. Helps with the lefts. This is the driver that finally dethroned my Ping Rapture V2. Toe mishits are not badly punished and that is my miss. I can still swing at approx, 109mph, carry 275 on solid strikes. Here is a pic of the shafts I play with, the Fuji 6.2x speeder and 660TRx get the most game time

FAIRWAYS:

I spent a lot of time screwing around this summer with loads of different heads and I ended up settling on the GBB 3 and 5w's. Before this season I was a devout 4w and 7w player for years. I've posted pics before of the assortment of 3, 4 and 5w's I have, more than 20. These clubs are so easy to hit off the deck and they are great off the tee as well. I like that I can play with the lofts and I like how they blend into my hybrids. I also do a lot of experimenting with different shafts in different heads. I really wish the manufacturers would settle on a common universal adapter.

Big fan of the feel of the old Mitsu shafts. Fubuki Tour 73x in the 5w and the Diamana BlueBoard flowerband 63x in the 3w. Both crazy smooth and great fwy wood options that are as good as any of the new stuff. Went back to these after a summer of playing around with many different AD DI shafts in Callaway 3 and 5 deeps and the 2017 M1 3HL.

HYBRIDS:

I can't say enough about these two clubs, I used to abhor hybrids. I like them so much I have the 2 and 3 heads as well. Great from any lie, not hook biased like many others and great clubs to go high or low or fade and draw. The Matrix shafts are a recent change, testing these as they are tighter than the stock KK's. And I loved the Altus Red in the Adams hybrids I had.

IRONS:

Left a run of every set of Ping S series made to these new beauties. Forgiving, blade appearance, longer and higher flight than my s55's. I also wanted to get a lighter shaft in Nippon to help with wear and tear on the hands and elbows. Specs are Nippon Modus Tour 105x, 1* strong, 2* flat, 3/4" long, heavier swingweights (D5 to D7 progressive) and I went with the sticky 2.3's in a 4 and 5 wrap upside down install.

WEDGES:

Good lord I have way too many wedges. Somewhere around 40, Most of the year I went with sm2 TVD M grinds but recently fell in love with a sm5 62*T. Currently paired it up with a SM4 TVD 50*. My SM4 TVD M 56* is being re-shafted right now at my fitters, love the bay!

PUTTER:

I am better than most here. Only have about 9 or 10 putters. Three really nice extra Scotty's.

The X7m with the 25g weights is awesome for me. I have an orange iomic on it and I can't see it going anywhere. I actually met Scotty at the PGA show two years back and he said flow necks would suit my stroke better but I keep going back to this bad boy.

HEADCOVERS:

Pic attached of a Tasmanian Devil cover I got from Australia. i was born in Tasmania eons ago so I like this. This cover will also work well with next years interclub team bags, the new mascot Hoofer in light gray and charcoal with white piping. I have some other leather fairway headcovers coming in in gray and black with pink accents. I wear a lot of pink and have the shoes to pull it off.

I can post some info on the backup sets if anyone is interested. Iron sets are Ping s55's, Bridgestone J15 musclebacks and Callaway X-prototypes.

I'll be leaving one set in South Carolina again come March '18.

Uncle Cardie...you're out of control....a TRUE WRX club ho...also a cloth and shoe wh*re too....you might qualify as a golf metrosexual :taunt: ...lol....you're wife must yell at you tripping over your golf stuff and clothes all over the house.

Nice collection of King Valley golf bags.

Although I don't used them....I borrow someone's clubs while in Toronto in May with the Iomic's and really liked the tackiness of them....I don't wear a golf glove.

The 718 Titleist are sweet looking sticks...how did you get the SW up to D5-D7?

It's a head on a shelf right now with a whack of other bench warmers, including a 3 deep head. It was really good with a AD BB and AD MT but not GBB good

The GBB is just the simplest club for me ever off the deck. Works with my action for some reason. Half inch over length gets the swingweight to D5 and I am good to go

Some of my favorite putters. I gamed the Napa for a summer and the Buttonback for 2 summers

A few headcovers I like (my Dad is British/Scottish). I got the 2007 Hawaii as we went there on my 40th. I see some guys have massive collections of these.

I have the pink putter cover looked after for next year's bag, except it is for a blade. I need to get a pink mallet cover made up or find a cool one on line

Where in Canada are you based? I've moved from New Zealand this year, and this whole not being able to play in winter thing really stinks...

Just North of Toronto

You can play in winter of course, that's why Florida was invented. Hope in a car and drive 18 hours.

In 36 years of golfing I've only had 1 ace ... and 1 albatross

The ace was in 2012 - 9 iron from 144.

The albatross was WAAAAY back in 1985. I'm so old the albatross was with a MacGregor persimmon 3w with a metal insert, 243 yarder

In both cases they were uphill shots and I didn't see the ball disappear
