I read somewhere that cobra/puma only wants to sponsor players who best represent their brand (hence Fowler and Bryson). I think its a combination of that and the other companies willing to throw money in every direction to say "the most played (blank) on tour",

I personally love cobra clubs. They're as good as most things out there. That said I don't think they'd take over bags like Mizuno irons if contracts weren't dictating what the guys play.

Hey all, I was just thinking about Cobra`s lack of high end tour players. Of course Fowler and Lexi excluded. Why the lack of "stars"? Are the clubs really inferior to the other OEM`s or are they not willing to pay for endorsement deals? Just a thought I had.

Ouch LOL, Inferior.... I hear that about Nike, and there was some guy that was considered one of the greatest golfers of our time?....LOL Im sorry... shameless plug....

I recently got on the Cobra train.......Good !@#$$% I love their irons....it makes me sad because I would love to try their newer stuff but Im broke. But Cobra has been around a longgggg time, Got some pretty old school cobra stuff in the closet.....the lack of "Star" power does questions it..... but for what eve reason they are hanging in there.

Some of the recent offerings are amazing.... Bio Cell drivers were amazing....just not the same as the marketing power as some of the other brands. Same with their current iterations of "King" Series Irons and woods seem amazing. Wedges are tough when everyone is used to BV's......etc...

So lack of Star power sure.....inferior.....cant justify that single word in the same sentence as. (Cobra)

Marketing and money....when you have deep pockets it seems easy to get exposure.......

All I can say is if Rickie 4 POY2018!!!!!!!!

I am sure it’s mostly a budgeting thing. Let’s not forget that cobra hasn’t been independent of titleist all that long either (5 yearsish?), so they used to fall under that same umbrella. I’d say give it 5 more years and you’ll see some top guys playing cobra. They make stuff too good not to have it happen.

Good point about the Titleist/Acushnet deal. I figured with the fallout of Nike making clubs maybe someone would have gave them a tryout.

Are we really that brainwashed by what is played most on tour?

No, I`m not. I play King F6 irons and driver,3w. I was just wondering why the lack of "star" power. I could care less who plays what, I just play what I can afford and what works ok for me.

Cobra certainly isn't inferior by any means. A seeming lack of star power other than Rickie and Lexie is really a misnomer. Cobra really doesn't have any other tour presence other than Bryson and a coupe of others (Blair O'neill doesn't count). Their stuff is absolutely top notch. The lack of a sizeable tour presence is only about marketing. I just get very tired about people making judgments of brands based on tour presence and my reaction was probably harsher than I wanted it to be. Not trying to take it out on you by any means.

Really? REALLY?! All manufacturers make great clubs. It's this? Really?!

Relax man. It`s a question, do you have a plausible anwser?

Sorry, I was simply echoing sentiments that have been expressed over and over in various threads about multiple manufacturers. Likely it's due to not paying top dollar for endorsements. It seems to me that Cobra puts more money into their R & D and into selling their products with higher end upgrades without passing on those expenses to the consumer. The consumer really wins in the end...

I'm sure Cobra makes great stuff. Then again in this market where the number of potential customers in this sport is stagnant and even shrinking all the OEMs have to make great stuff in order to be competitive.

Jonas Blixt used to play Cobra as well, not a superstar, but a tour winner never than less...he now uses TM M2 Driver, Cobra 3W and 5W, MP25 irons, Vokey wedges and a TM Spider Tour putter...I played the Cobra S3 white edition and the ZL, both amazing drivers, long and very forgiving...

I may be a oddity, but I really have zero concern what PGA players play what brands/items.

I have about as much in common with a PGA Tour Professional as I do with a Rocket Surgeon. WE both may be people, we both may be a lot of things...but we ain't the same when it comes to the game of golf or launching rockets.

One thing I am is an equipment GEEK and I don't care who makes it, when it was made, or how it was made, if I like the way it looks and can use it and be successful...I will.

They only want certain players to market their gear, on top of the fact they probably don't have as much liquidity to spend on top tier players in addition to them keeping overheads low so they can offer products for less than the competition. It also allows them to potentially innovate over a faster time line since funds that would be spent on player salary and marketing go to R&D.

+1 - kinda of surprised more golfers don't have this attitude. Marketing, however, has a strong influence on the consumer. I'd like to think I'll hit a TM driver as far and straight as DJ, but it ain't going to happen. When discussing equipment with my buddies, many of them can't fathom buying a used club or buying clubs manufactured by anyone other than Ping, Mizuno, Callaway or Titleist. If I mention Maltby, Wilson, Cobra or any other "under the radar" brand, they just dismiss it as junk.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I don`t think you are the odd man out, I think you are realistic. You likely realize just because so and so plays a certain brand, that certain brand isn`t going to make your game as good theirs.

Agreed, I almost wanna say Puma/Cobra is more focused on clothing than clubs from a marketing view. Look at the female staffers Lexi, Carly Booth, Sophia Popov, Holly Sonders, Blair O`Neal...do you see a pattern. I do and other than Lexi, it doesn`t involve top tier golf skills. Look at the males, Bryson DeChambeau, Jesper Parnevik, and even Fowler all making fashion statements with their choice of headwear, Fowler with the flashy colors.

I`m not hating on Puma/Cobra at all. I own 4 pairs of Puma shoes, all of them older than Puma`s relationship with Cobra. I`ve been playing their clubs since 2012.

I simply wondered why the lack of skilled tour players?

Puma / Cobra has a image they want to project and they are very selective in who they choose to represent them. Cobra likes the outliers, those who don't fit the conventional image of a golfer. Rickie and Bryson work because they are both unique and are easy to pick out of a crowd. Cobra doesn't want to spend a lot of money on golfers that don't fit their image or look similar to many other golfers.

I've been playing Cobra drivers since the Biocell was released, I'll probably try the F8 over the winter and see how I like it.... I'm off today and went to the range this morning, took my biocell driver as I don't like hitting range balls with the F7, and I must say I don't know why I keep buying new drivers....

I wouldn’t really say im influenced by what guys on Tour play.....but when (almost) everyone seems to be hitting a TM driver it says alot.

Especially when a guys bag says Srixon or Mizuno or Nike and they are hitting a M2 driver. They could use a Cobra, but you never see it.

This is exactly what I meant when I said "inferior", why no love for the Cobra`s. Have pro`s tried the drivers and didn`t like them for whatever reason. I just found it kinda odd.

Ping doesn't really have a "big" name after Bubba, and I don't think anyone would consider them an inferior brand. Just a different marketing strategy.

I would consider Brooke Henderson as a big name in golf. Regardless, you are correct though. I don`t imagine Ping is pinching pennies either.

I do want to clear one thing up, when I say inferior, I don`t mean some garbage clubs. Perhaps pro`s find the clubs less quality?

So far in my search for an answer it seems marketing seems to be the culprit.

Although this quote from aceofclubs sure has me wondering.

We don't know if any of those guys are getting paid to use TM woods, Srixon and Mizuno might not care enough about their woods to pay extra if the players bag and hat already have their logo on it. I have no doubt people are influenced by what their favorite golfers play but it's more about image than it is performance.

If drivers are truly maxed out on distance then the only difference between a Cobra driver and TM driver is finding the right combination of shaft and settings to yield the same results.
