It seems like this may be a strategy pushed down from Puma. Name a Puma athlete in any other sport. I'm sure they are out there, but I can't think of a significant one, just Julian Edelman from the Patriots but he isn't exactly top tier household name. Maybe some international soccer players or F1 drivers or something, but a large stable of North American athletes just doesn't seem to be a priority at Puma.

I wouldn’t really say im influenced by what guys on Tour play.....but when (almost) everyone seems to be hitting a TM driver it says alot.

Especially when a guys bag says Srixon or Mizuno or Nike and they are hitting a M2 driver. They could use a Cobra, but you never see it.

We don't know if any of those guys are getting paid to use TM woods, Srixon and Mizuno might not care enough about their woods to pay extra if the players bag and hat already have their logo on it. I have no doubt people are influenced by what their favorite golfers play but it's more about image than it is performance.

If drivers are truly maxed out on distance then the only difference between a Cobra driver and TM driver is finding the right combination of shaft and settings to yield the same results.

Sure they are getting paid to use TM woods, just crazy that Cobra cant get one player, that has the flexibility with that part of their bag to use their woods. Maybe they dont care to pay the $.

Im not complaining, i like Cobra stuff.....and because its not on TV, its cheap.

Taylormade pays tee up money for each event, was told it was around $1500 per event X 25 events=$37,500 X all the Tour players = a lot of money, Cobra not willing to spend that kind of $$, will see if Taylormade is still willing to pay next year under new ownership?

He came to mind, but wasn't sure if he was a Puma athlete or if Jamaican National track was a Puma team.

Do they have any other significant track athletes? Is there another track athlete that is anywhere close to his level of fame? I think it doesn't necessarily disprove the point, they have their one guy, quality over quantity approach to sponsored athletes.

Puma NA HQ is 2 miles from my house. It is 30 miles out of the city in a suburb office park next to a bunch of farms. It is a very modest building for a large international corporation. They have a Boston office too which I'm sure is fancier, but maybe Puma is just sort of a no frills, financially conservative company?

Puma always sponsored only a few selected athletes, also in football (soccer for our American friends). They sponsored the great Pele, after that Maradonna, etc, while all the others were Adidas. The same in Tennis with Boris Becker. They want to concentrate on a few athletes, whereas Nike and Adidas want to sponsor the biggest number possible.

Cobra is producing quality products and has been innovative since Puma acquired them in 2010. Even in the shadow of Titleist, Cobra seemed to keep the brand limited in sponsorships with a high level of quality. As a few have pointed out, Puma does not sponsor as many people as some of the other brands. It seems Cobra/Puma golf requires clothes and club sponsorship. When Nike stopped making equipment they kept many players in their golf clothing and footwear, so Cobra/Puma golf probably had less chance to add to the number of players they sponsor. This could be the same with the Adidas-Taylormade golf split.

I am looking forward to playing some Cobra clubs this year.

I bought an F7+ driver based on the reviews and it's fantastic, great value too.

Better sound than my old GBB and the performance is excellent.

F7 product was highly underrated in the year of the epic driver..fantastic product and a terrific value..

The new F8 line is tremendous as well

Under construction....

Only a few clubs in the bag that aren’t cobra. Can’t seem to clear them out to be a full cobra bag. The other clubs just work

Great choices with your fairway and hybrid they are sneaky good...I must recommend trying the single length hybrid when it comes out...it is like cheating to hit...

Personally I think they make great clubs. I’ve played their S3 Pro irons since they came out and haven’t even considered anything else. I’d probably have 13 of their clubs except for the fact that Titleist woods and wedges have worked fine for me. If they brought back the circa 1999 Trusty Rusty wedges I’d probably be out a few hundred bucks.

Tour issued s3 pro are amongst the best irons Ive played. Beautiful soft forged feel great lines all around. I do like the biocell pro head, the Ltd was good as well. The only disappointing cobra xlub ive owned is a couple of tour issued biocell fairways both 3 and 5 wood. They're sitting in my basement, hated the feel of them they felt and soumded very plastic eeeeee.

There are a lot of different marketing/brand strategies. Not everyone is going to adopt a "dominate the tour" philosophy. It's expensive, and i mean TMAG for example had some ups and downs doing this, it's not cheap to pay 100 guys to use your clubs even if they are just driver deals or weekly deals. There's definitely a correlation between tour use and sales, but how large a correlation is up for debate.

It's possible Puma is trying to pick someone like Rickie who is very unique, and built their brand around an "image" of what a couple of guys represent. In many ways Rickie's personality is as important as his success on the course. He is very popular with young golfers

I am sure many of us have seen 10-16 year old golfers in orange gear and cobra clubs. I don't know how well they are doing financially, but it's a valid strategy on paper IMO

I have heard With the new owners TM is going to cut way back on tee it up money for next year...could be interesting for a lot of companies if TM doesn't try to out spend everyone...I mean they do already have Jason, Justin, Dustin, Rory, Jon and Tiger...they have spent a ton of money already and no Adidas to help them out....

It's wouldn't be crazy, this tends to go in cycles. I recall back in the late 90's i believe it was, that shoe companies cut way back on endorsements for NBA players. For a while everyone had a shoe deal, then they realized it probably didn't matter if the 7th man for the Milwaukee Bucks was wearing Nikes or Reeboks.

There was method to TM's madness, they wanted to claim massive driver dominance in the counts. But it may be time to try a new approach.

Cobra makes top shelf golf equipment and always has. Back in the 80s their blades were awesome and hugely popular in Australia. Their first baffler FWs were revolutionary and lightyears ahead of their time. Their drivers have always been top notch and one was used by a certain phenom to destroy Augusta and start a new era of power golf in 97. Their recent stuff is just as good as anything out there and their blades since the late 00s are arguably as good as anything out there despite the lower cost. And who can forget the crazy spin and precision of the trusty rusty wedges?

I have a bcp in my bag and it oozes class and quality craftsmanship. I would put it up against anything new outside M1/2 and Epics.

Cobra may have lost a few tour players after going from Acushnet to Puma, but that is no reflection on quality or tech imo.
