For me the answer to how it happened is "it's 2nd Swing". Don't like them. Never have.

Really only my second time dealing with them. Not any more.

How did the first order go?

Understand being upset and taking the refund. If you have had this occur many times with them, I can also understand taking your business elsewhere. But if this is the first time it has happened to you with 2nd Swing, then your reaction is a bit of an overreaction. Every retailer can make a mistake. The mistake is not the issue, but how they deal with it is. I cannot even imagine the number of orders being placed at this time of year.

First experience was for a used set of irons listed in 8 of 10 condition that were beat to hell. I did take the refund. Why would I order from a company again who made a mistake that shouldn't be made? Again, if it drop shipped from Cleveland it's not their fault. They repackaged a club or maybe even just shipped the wrong club from stock that was a custom order. It obviously was not inspected before it went out the door. Who cares how many orders they are getting now? That's incompetence. I really only posted this as a heads up to others. I've dealt with many mistakes before from other places. 2nd Swing is giving a refund and that's really all I can ask. (It's not like they have a choice though. I didn't get what I ordered) I'm probably just more ticked that I don't have the club I ordered in hand so I can give it a whirl and have to re-order somewhere else.

When these sorts of things come up I cannot help but wonder how many of the online businesses sort of rely on their customers not really knowing the equipment. You know, placing an order and then getting the wrong thing that is close but not exact.

The members here are savvy golf equipment consumers. I have a feeling that many of the people who order from 2nd Swing and other such establishments online simply order, receive and swing away. The the retailers sort of pad their end numbers by having shipped something of lessor value.

Am I way off here with this thought?

I understand your thinking, but no business wants to disappoint customers and take the risk of a bad reputation. You don't stay in business very long if you have an I don't care attitude about your customers.

Again, I get being upset. Especially when you want to get out and hit the club. I have had the same thing happen when I was to play a round the next day and the club I ordered got delayed. Disappointing for sure. But I still enjoyed my round (and likely did not score any worse)!

No mistake should ever be made. But they are mistakes. We all make them. I have only had one transaction with 2nd Swing (which went fine). But I have have had occasional transactions with many other places where they botched it. (Amazon just lost a dozen golf balls that I ordered. How do you lose a dozen golf balls? But I will still order from Amazon).

Getting the wrong product is not incompetent. Its a mistake. It happening over and over again from the same company would indicate incompetence.

We all tend to have higher expectations of others that we do of ourselves.

overpriced, overstated condition, slow to reply.

Swing and a miss is more like it.

I have seen them charge more than new, retail for a single Mizuno iron that was used.

Dealt with them once. Went OK, said condition was 8 or so and it was more like a usual 5. I called and explained to them and they got me a partial credit, but I was calm the whole time. But accidents happen and people are human. You got the refund option, and I get that you are mad and upset, but it's a golf club.

Sorry, I don't know much about 2nd Swing but they sound like a used club dealer exclusively, just going by the name... Was there some amazing deal to be had ordering brand new driver through them instead of another proven retailer or even Cleveland/Srixon themselves? I apologize if I am missing something here but they probably wouldn't be my first place for a custom ordered driver.... Unless the deal was too good to be true, even then, I'd probably rethink it.

But if they "make it right" they could do the damage control necessary to appease those few customers who actually do know "Like New" versus "What the hell is this" condition.

This is all just conjecture on my part of course. But could not help but wonder if this might be a possibility. Their target customer base isn't us on here - it is the weekend hacker who won't know any better and could not care less is the foundation of my theory here.

I’ve dealt with 2nd Swing a few times. Their prices tend to be higher but I like that they will customize any club-nice for those of us in the sticks.

As for condition, they have pics of all their clubs so IMO the rating is pretty much irrelevant. Look at the pics and determine if you want the club.

I’d say it was an honest mistake they made. It sucks but it happens...in all walks of life.

Nope. I'm not perfect, but I understand what content to place in the deal or no deal forum.

Need help figuring out what's real or fake? Hear about a good deal on golf gear? Having trouble with a transaction? Customer Service experiences? Place those questions and comments here.

Notice the section that says customer service experiences?

It's my opinion that custom orders should be inspected before shipping. It wasn't. I shared my experience. Understand? Now go away.

I have never used them - have noticed that they GUARANTEE the best trade in values on their website but are well below other online retailers. I figured if I have to correct you from the start its not gonna be worth it. Ordered plenty from Discount Dan'ss - never had them make a mistake and have received excellent service when I did need help with warranty work from the manufacture.

What do you mean Medic?

I just don't understand the attack mentality that happens here. The OP received something he didn't order. It's a golf related item. He posted here to vent a little, perhaps ask a little advice and even warn others given that this seller has a sort of a reputation of doing some questionable things in the past. He never implied that he himself never makes a mistake.

So I guess the simple sum is that I just don't understand what the OP did that would set the wheels in motion for your reply.

If you can't openly discuss golf-related issues without a fear of a sort of a retaliation than where does that leave us? And so I asked why? Just why?

Having explained my reply to yours, care to expand a little. What were your thoughts as you were posting? How did it make you feel? What about the OP's post offended you?

For and on the record I love the back and forth here - you know that if you have followed me at all. But I also love the idea of protecting the field so to speak. I see the OP as just that - order one thing, receive another - yeah I'd say that's good reason to proceed with caution when dealing with that retailer. I have no doubt that the seller will make things right or the OP will get his money back. But all of that hassle could have been avoided if the seller had just done the right thing in the first place, no? And posting here acts as a sort of an alert to others.

Unfortunately, and know I respect and enjoy your contributions, I don’t believe any of this to be true. The retailer I work for could make the same mistake and here’s how. A customer calls and places an order with custom specs. Since we don’t have a listing for custom specs, I run the order through using the standard sku and manually process the order. The order doesn’t get set to the right setting in our back end ordering system and gets processed through our normal order batch system and the standard club gets pulled and shipped. Now in our case, we would have still placed the custom order for drop ship and eventually the customer would get both clubs. But this scenario is possible.

If 2nd Swing has a custom listing on their website, then I don’t have any idea how they would mess that up.

Here are a few quotes from the OP

How can I be assured this wouldn't happen again?

You can`t be assured it won`t happen again, people make mistakes everyday.

I just don't understand how these places operate like this.

Again, it happens. Maybe it was a new worker who didn`t fully understand your order. Who know`s really.

Who cares how many orders they are getting now? That's incompetence.

This is what made me comment. This is plain ignorant. It`s so easy to judge other people when we don`t know what the situation was that caused the mistake in the first place. I could throw out several examples, but it doesn`t matter really.

See post #21. I must have missed the part where it said run all customer service complaints through Chronicslicer. I don't think it's too much to ask for a custom order to be inspected before being shipped. Next time I'll hit you up first before posting.

Since this is the second transaction OP has had with 2nd swing, I can understand his desire to support any of the hundreds of other golf retailers. Doesn't mean 2nd swing is a "bad" retailer per se, but I'd probably just figure they weren't meant for me to purchase from.

I might not have posted about this, but I do understand the urge to want to tell someone who may sympathize. My wife and coworkers wouldn't care...It's not like OP is calling for a mass boycott. Just venting his frustration.

It's very easy for those who have never worked in retail to criticize retail operations and errors. A human made a mistake? "Let's automate everything!" Automated system made a mistake? "I miss the good old days when a person with a brain would be doing this." "How hard is it to pull the right club?"...Things happen. That's life.

Yet, the reality is that as customers paying non-insignificant sums, most of us expect perfection. Is that fair? Probably not...but I don't think there's anyone on this board who would be neutral to happy about receiving the wrong item.

I think I can shed a little, well more like a lot of light on this situation.

My name is Jon and I work at 2ndSwing. I'm the associate who not only placed, but wrongfully shipped this order.

A little backstory:

When a custom order is placed on 2ndswing.com, it's captured and relayed directly to the manufacturer where the order is fulfilled. Based on which manufacturer and other factors, the club will either drop ship directly to the customer or come back to our distribution center before being forwarded on.

This particular order came back to our distribution center and I remember it clearly. The box in which it came (from Cleveland) was damp and torn. I took the club out and examined it for any damage- the club was fine. I quickly checked the loft and grip but made a crucial mistake in not recognizing the incorrect shaft before repackaging the club in the 2ndswing box to ensure safe delivery.

Specifically there were two breakdowns on the order. The first would be at the manufacturer. Someone there clearly did not input the order correctly. I would surmise they didn't notice the custom shaft and length specifications requested and placed a stock order instead. The second error was mine and I take full responsibility for it. Despite having the club in my hand, I neglected to notice the incorrect shaft when comparing it to the captured order and shipped it out.

A few of us here, myself included, like to read the forums and I happened to stumble on this and felt obligated to comment. I will say, as a company, 2nd swing places a high value on customer satisfaction and in turn I'd like to personally offer my help in correcting this issue. You can reach me directly by calling (612) 216-4152 (ext 313) Otherwise I'd like to extend my sincere apology for the mistake. We're all golfers here and I'm sure I'd share the same frustration if I was in your shoes.

All the best.

Jon.

Well done clearing that up. Personally, I couldn’t expect better CS than that. Mistakes happen and it sounds like you’ve offered to fix it.

Now could you possible speak to this thread about 2nd Swing?

Much appreciated.
