Jack Nicklaus ‘not interested at all’ in watching Tiger Woods’ comeback

Jack was being dismissive of Tiger in a jerkish way, then realized how it might of sounded and decided to do some damage control. He claims his tv is always on but he doesn't watch golf, I don't believe that for a second, especially if they are playing a course he was involved with.

What the media says someone said...

"I hate golf!"

But the part the cut out really sort of changes things....

"I hate golf in the rain when I have a cold!"

That's pretty much how they go about reporting now. Take a small part of what is said, selectively highlight it and run with it as if it is the whole statement.

Sad.....

Amen Jim, amen. Cherry pick the quote to suit your narrative...facts/truth are irrelevant.

One of the cool things about Jack is that he's never tried to be Arnold Palmer. He's pretty genuine, like it or not, and because of his stature in the game is always being pulled into these discussions, which at this point I'm sure he finds pretty tiresome.

I don't think the statement was intentionally dismissive or derogatory toward Tiger although taken out of context it might seem like it.

Jack has stated on more than one occasion that he doesn't watch or follow much Tour golf with the exception of The Memorial or when his buddy Tom Watson had a chance at the Open Championship a few years back. Now if one of his grandchildren is playing in a US Kids event thats a different story...

Arnold Palmer seemed to watch everything that happened in golf, and with great interest. He would handwrite letters to winners of tournaments big and small, on a weekly basis practically. Now that was obviously a passion of Arnold's and not saying Jack Nicklaus should do likewise, but he can do a lot better than "Hey listen, I don't watch anybody play golf." I mean sure if you want to get technical about it, OK Jack, golf is stupid, golf is boring, golf is a waste of time etc all true. But it is a game that Jack continues to make a lot of money off. He also has his own PGA TOUR event. Those things benefit greatly from people watching. But whatever maybe the guy just had a bad day on the tennis court, or maybe he is still very cross with Tiger, for the DUI and what not.

Disrespect? Honesty? No big deal? Media stirring the pot?

Who is stirring the pot here?

Article speaks for itself, put the remarks in context. Clearly not disrespect, no reason to raise that question. Edit: looks like you weren't meaning to raise that question.

Jack has said a zillion times he watches little if any golf and takes little interest in the game any more, been that way for a long time - life is about the grandkids, other business things, fishing, you name it.

No surprise he isn't earmarking the TV Guide if Tiger happens to be playing.

Guys tells the truth, folks on here make snide remarks. And if he said he was hanging on every shot, press would be all over him every time Tiger played. Can't win, but always classy, period.

But why does he desperately want to dial back the ball, if he says:

"...I don't watch anybody play golf." ?

:busted2:

Probably because he thinks it's what's best for the game. The famous concession, it was his idea for mainland Europe to be included in the Ryder Cup.He has hosted an event for over 40 years, will have probably designed over 500 courses by the time he has stopped.

Who is more qualified to speak on this topic?

The idea that he wants the ball changed to preserve his record is just nonsense.

He may think that, but he might be wrong.

He is a old man, with a network, which is meanwhile better working than his golf swing.

His strength, and his focus have for sure shifted, and are certainly NOT winning tournaments, but money and fun.

And I think, that it is not only me, who don´t want to be fooled - not even by Jack.

Maybe Jack is simply tired of answering non-stop questions about Tiger? At Jacks age I'm guessing he doesn't feel the need to pander. Based on my perception Jack has always had that stern no nonsense personality. Just like most people he's a product of his time...BB

Great point. And I'd bet dollars to doughnuts Jack still watches golf from time to time. The person who drew that quote from Jack must've caught him on a bad day. You get a lot of those at Jack's age. :)

Exactly. On another site, a media person who has covered Jack for years said that he can be moody. If you catch him on a good day, he can be witty, and fun. Catch him on another day, and not so much.

Ask him about Federer, and I bet he would have given a more positive answer.

By the way, I thought that this comment was more interesting:

"Tiger seemed to hit the ball pretty well over there and seemed to enjoy it and be pain-free and I wish him well," Nicklaus said. "The swing as I saw, looked good. It looked like a swing of somebody who didn't want to hurt his back."

Bitter Jack at his best !!!

Exactly! Jack is a far cry from Arnie.

Just stop.

You're a die-hard, tried and true, Tiger Woods fan. Without question, your bias is showing.

and you are a diehard fan of somebody,...so? can't be objective about anything? now you know silliness

Jack is the GOAT, has a life outside of golf, is well respected for his on and off course behaviors, and probably he is tired of being asked about Tigers game, comeback, etc.Wander how he would respond to "how about Rickie's 61 to win the Hero?"

LOL, like everyone else - "Rickie (insert any favorite golfer) was playing the Hero?"

I jest.

congrats to Jack , I could care less if Tigger ever teed it up again in his life. He made golf from a quiet game to a juggernaut where people yell half way across a golf course and act like idiots. These same idiots would never have stepped on a golf course years ago. It was called cow pasture pool and made fun of by lots of people. It was perfectly acceptable. 1998 was the year all the idiots came to play. that was the year I went from semi public or public courses to private country clubs with a hefty fee. keep the riff raff out. i dont care what nationality you are, just follow the rules like it was done in Bobby Jones era. Not that Mashed potato crap.

This is too funny, and I'm sure to a degree Mr Nicklaus might agree with you on some points, maybe. I definitely agree with the mashed potato thing or any of the other things people yell after impact. Just thinking about yelling that at someone while in a group of people makes me feel awkward, but to each his own. As for the other stuff, golf is for everyone. The fact that he brought people to the game the way he did is partly the reason these OEM spend all this money improving the equipment that I'm sure you enjoy. And the players he inspired to play just might become your next Bobby jones. You can't blame tiger for idiots being idiots. I'm sure there were plenty of idiots in the 20s and 30s anyway. People just didn't have access to watching them on their phones and TVs. Monkey see, monkey do

Good for Jack, although the article is trashy on so many levels.

Why anyone would think that a pro golfer would be a Fanboy of any other pro golfer

Is beyond me. Honestly , who cares if he comes back or not, doubt Jack does.
