Shells Wonderful World of Golf, wouldn’t it be nice if they brought it back

It shouldn't be that difficult. You pay the players a massive appearance fee and then donate a good amount of proceeds to some charity. Let's say the winner gets to donate $100,000 to their charity of choice and the loser gets to donate $50,000. Whatever the figures end up being, the players look good because it's billed as a charity/fundraising event. They get a guaranteed paycheck and get to hang out with their buddies. It didn't make sense with the TW generation because if TW wasn't in it then nobody would care...and TW wasn't going to deal with televised exhibition matches. I have a hard time believing that someone couldn't get guys like Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas involved in this sort of project.

What sponsor is going to kick in a million plus for an 18 hole match on a third tier cable network? Hard enough to find one, to rehash the series you need at least 4 per year.

Weren’t the shells matches only shown in syndication on the Golf Channel? I thought they were originally broadcast on a major network. I think it was ABC?

A new incarnation definitely isn’t going to work on network TV. Way too expensive - would be more sponsor plugs in 20 minutes than cbs runs in a typical 3 hour broadcast. And yes the originals were network with Gene Sarazen hosting, etc. the most recent with Monty, Couples, Mickelson, Faldo, Etc were TGC shows.

The marquee names in golf have so much money, in my opinion, I don't think that would be the motivating factor for them. I think their competitive drive, the chance to be a part of the rejuvenation of one of the games older traditions, and the chance to showcase their personalities outside of the focused zone of tournament play would have them lining up to be included. If I were a tour player, I know it would mean a lot to me to play in something so many of the greats participated in.

Totally agree, and one would think a sponsor, such as Shell, would be interested. The old Shell's Wonderful World of Golf continues to be seen and are steeped in the history of the game.

I'd like to see a serious golf movie about the match at Cypress Point between Hogan and Nelson and Ward / Venturi

Get pro's to play these guys for at least the swing parts, no slasher swings like most golf movies

I thought they really had something with the "Monday Night Golf" series back in 1999-2001. I especially liked 2001 under the lights with the girls involved. One problem is that it simply must involve Tiger or it likely will not be worth the expense. Another problem is the money in golf has exploded. These guys won't show up unless there is $1+ million on the line.

Greg Norman vs Fred Couples at the height of their powers in Scotland...

With crazy wind is what SWWOW IS golf is all about…

2 irons going 300 yards...ok...pure perfection if y’all get a spare hour..

And oh to have see Norman’s reverse C...could watch that thing all day...or Freddie’s unique fluid move

When SWWOG came back to television in 1994 the episodes were originally televised by ABC/ESPN. Golf Channel has syndication rights which they do not use enough. SWWOG was never an original Golf Channel show/production.

Yes, bring it back. This is most likely exactly what the Golf Channel could use. I love the replays of Shell's Wonderful World of Golf, and liked the other similar formats, long passed. I'll take Justin playing Jordan this week, and perhaps another playing the winner the following week. Keep winning, keep playing, lose and you'll be replaced the following week. This would be good. Perhaps a sponsor's charity prize money match, extra for back-to-back birdies, eagles, etc.

I can hear it now, Mr. X has four birdies in a row going for his fifth, or maybe, Mr. Z is -4 under par, but trails by a stroke going into 18.

It could be really good, and narrated by Mr. F (yes, that Mr. F), certainly not Mr. M

who would be the commentator ?

Maybe Augusta National could be convinced to do a Phil vs. Tiger match. Make it a one off event where Augusta gets great PR for donating a massive sum to some kids charity, and the world gets to see Augusta National and two of the all-time greats one more time than normal. Plus, people have always been curious what the National looks like in winter. This would be a neat way to showcase that.

Gary Player does on-course commentary, with Nicklaus doing colour commentary from the booth.

Couldn't sleep last night and stumbled on to the Golf Channel. Was pleasantly surprised to see Trevino vs Player on and stayed up to watch. Shocked to see what time it was when I shut the tube off, but, great tos eee them again. Much better than Tin Cup and some of the other movies they play over ad nauseum.

Nice to see them back on the air, even if its after hours. I've programmed my cable box to record them all - I cant wait to get home and watch the DeVincenzo vs Snead match.

Watched Arnold and jack Plus Trevino vs player this morning. That was good. Probably the best clear footage I have seen of lee when he could still turn and was hitting the ball well. Really enjoy all these episodes.

Well, a certain whiny ex-tennis pro!

Byron Nelson vs. Gene Littler is on right now. Playing Pine Valley. Awesome stuff!

Putting with the flag in left unattended. Putting out 4 footers without marking the ball.

Is that where Littler got eaten alive by the course? Looked unbelievably tough.

It's a true mystery as to how anyone ever broke 80 before Tiger, video analysis, laser yardage finders, Trackman, swing coaches, gym coaches, life coaches, and Dr. Bob Rotella came along. Next thing you'll tell me they were using woods made out of wood.
