PGA Tour Commentary

I can't stand how they try and make every shot seem like it is life or death. Like these guys are in battle, or are some warriors or gunslingers in a duel. They are playing golf, let's tone it down a bit here.

How a simple chip "Has an impossible lie, really buried in the rough here and the green is sloping away from him. I'm not even sure he can advance it out of this lie, 10 ft would be good here." Then the player hits a simple pitch shot and the commentary is "Oh my!! Wow! No other golfer on Earth could have chipped that to 6ft, just look at the acceleration into the ball, with the water behind the green, this man has no fear! These guys are good!"

Another one that gets me is the.. "Wow, what a drive right there, 320 yards! That's just a product of the hard work these guys put in week in and week out." Yea, I could hit it 300 yards too if I got the 40 yards of roll like they do on tour most events.

I understand they are great golfers, but not lets act like some of the shots they hit out there couldn't be done by somebody who is less than a 10 handicap.

It's just a TV show. ;) Hyperbole sells Buicks and Viagra. So, three cheers for one of the twentieth century's finest inventions . . . the remote control!

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the skill set which a player must have to play competitive golf.

Exactly. They've got to try and create some drama in a sport where there sometimes isn't any. "You know, if (our leader) makes a quad on 18 (when he's only made 2 bogeys all week) and the 2nd place guy holes out from the fairway we've got ourselves a playoff!"

I really liked the commentary that the Golf Channel had during the first couple of days of this year's Hero. It was Nobilo and Chamblee and Burr just watching Tiger play and having a roundtable discussion as they see his round unfold. I think this one new way to do at least the preliminary coverage. During the College Football Championship Game, ESPN 2 does this type of commentary with 5-6 current coaches and I like what they are doing.

LOL, no tournaments even going on and we get this one!

OP, watching a basketball or football game must be really unbearable! Or Olympic figure skating - she stuck the landing!

I was watching the replay of the final stretch of the Shriners and another event this morning and this thread came to mind. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way!

No, you are the only person to complain about golf announcers on here - probably just seems over the top because it's a repeat and you can't get into the spectacle and glory that is The Shriners. Nance has a replica of one of their holes at his ranch for heaven's sake.

Lol always the "if I played on those fairways I would hit it 320."

If you've never seen a tour event in person, it's easy to come up with those delusions. There are long hitters on WRX for sure, but I don't think they're the same ones that credit dry or firm fairways for pro lengths or complain about their own slow fairways keeping them short.

If you're long, you're long. If you're a typical or average single digit amateur, then you're shorter than the vast majority of tour pros.

No your not - that is why I cancelled my Live subscription ... it is like they are broadcasting for radio, not video.

Then again I never understood why many would want to sit and watch someone else have all the fun instead of doing it themselves with friends as there is always an activity one can do regardless of the season.

You don't watch sports?

No ... granted I always liked it when the playoffs started ... for the regular season I understand that no one wants to risk getting burned out or injured early, but to compare the two is like going from the bunny slopes for beginners to the downhill slopes. Growing up I would organize games outdoors with my friends going for the championship ourselves. Playing football on Super Bowl Sunday outside on a field the size of a football field covered in snow and ice was a blast - especially when trying to time a pass or make a punt. The snow gear provided the padding. My friends liked to watch sports more than me, but I did tend to watch on television a little more, whatever sport I was playing myself growing up (from baseball, hockey, football, tennis and golf to volleyball, badminton and various running events when I was a runner). I guess when I injured my back, and had to walk away from active sports just before high school, just when I was starting to take it more seriously and push myself, I lost total interest in watching what I thoroughly enjoyed doing. Not that I didn't enjoy going to a bar and hanging out watching a play-off, but just no weekly watching of games. Now if someone wanted to go watch a live event - that I can still enjoy, just not on a television so much.

Golf is the last sport I still watch somewhat regularly - likely because golf is the only sport I play currently (actually I started watching it when I started playing again 6-7 seasons ago ... coincidence :)

I find the PGA Tour extended highlights cut down on the chatter and I learn quite a lot from it.

Actually I am currently on a month off to restart my life ... get rid of many old bad habits and start a new. One large part of it is to get back into some real physical training again ... who knows, if my knee holds out I may see myself back into a gym and trying my hand at basketball or floor hockey this summer. I know someone who is part of a serious fun football "soccer" league in town - could be fun.

I share this sentiment, with one exception. While I did play sports growing up (football and baseball mostly), I never cared for watching any of them on tv. I did watch them some, because we had 1 tv and that’s what my dad wanted to watch. If I could go outside, I would. Many times I would convince him to go fishing instead of watching sports. To this day, if I’m out somewhere and a game is on the tv, I might glance up at it in a lull in the conversation, but you won’t find me sitting around the house watching a game. If the weather is bad enough to keep me in the house, I might watch a little golf, but usually find something else to watch or do around the house.

I’ve never understood how a man could get so excited about watching other men play a game on tv. It’s almost creepy, lol. I have friends that won’t play golf during football season because they spend their entire weekend on the couch, at a bar, or at a stadium to watch a game. I personally don’t see the fun in that, and would rather be outside doing ANYTHING than inside somewhere watching tv.

Well, when I say I watch golf it was really only one season two years ago after work when I was too tired to do much - to try and learn from the players by studying them ... actually when I was a kid other than the Masters for a few years with my Dad, I only tried it for one or two during the Stanley Cups, and maybe a Super Bowl or two - but I totally get from where you are coming from. Of course, when I say I would go to a bar it may have been 3 times in my life with maybe 6 sports events on top of that - and 3 were just for the cheerleaders

I was agreeing with you. If I'm laid up at home with nothing to do and the weather isn't conducive to doing something outside, I'll sometimes throw golf on. I feel that I can learn some by watching them on TV, though I have always had better results watching them in person as far as learning goes. Especially tempo, which isn't as easily observed on TV as it is in person.

And I wasn't bagging on going to bars, god knows I've spent more of my time in life than I'm proud of in bars. I'm just giving examples like a friend of mine. He helped me get started playing golf 15 years ago, but these days, he wont play golf during football season. Saturday, he's bowed up watching college ball, and Sundays he cant get away from NFL (especially if the Texans are playing). Every Sunday during the season, he is either at the stadium (tailgating in the parking lot), at home or at a bar, watching a game. If that is what makes him, or anyone else happy, go for it, I just know I could never do it.

Watching a pro hit a ball, (not a guy who is a plus handicap and can hit 300 on the fly,,,dime a dozen). A real professional who can travel the country and compete in tournaments...is eye opening and borderline sickening. You are amazed and sickened at the same time. Like when the folks in Deep Impact had to watch the asteroid fly across their heads in amazement, but knew they would be dead in 3 mins. That's how I feel when I see a real pro strike a ball up close.

I understood - I was just adding on myself. I had a chance a couple of years ago to go watch the Champion tour in Quebec and unfortunately did not take advantage of it. Tailgating ... now the brings back a memory ... an ex was a huge Bills fan and she got me to drive down to Buffalo from Toronto to experience it first hand. I never accounted for the sheer volume of alcohol involved (I still have images of the port-a-john's at the outside of the entrance by the parking lots and the streams exiting them and people still using them) and that they lock the parking lot gates almost immediately after the game. Luckily I burn it off fairly fast and could get the car to a nearby mall and wait until I was okay to drive back across the border. But I understand, she was unavailable when a game was on.

Which is why I love watching the European Tour, and listening to the UK commentators, whose remarks are spare and somewhat understated.

As an aside, not so many heathens in the galleries screaming "IN THE HOLE !" with every tee shot, either.

I definitely have a bone to pick...

Rich Lerner. One would think we cant see whats happening on the telecast. We dont need a play by play on what we are watching and Please stop thinking you are an accredited swing coach.

Nick Faldo. Not sure what it is but i cant stand him. I feel like there are unnecessary put down comments directed at certain players.

And please can we stop the mid round cut across to televise the commentators themselves. Surely its something they can either have as a split screen or just talk whilst we watch the golf.

Anyways jst my 2 cents and opinion.

The talent level is not even able to be believed if you don't watch them in person

I'm a scratch player but when I see them live I feel like a 10.

Yea I hit it 300 but they hit it 350

Yea I hit great irons but they hit wedges close 80% of the time

They are average on the greens but ball striking is sic

I have been fortunate enough to see them live many times and yes they are really great but they aren’t Gods. I’m not saying an amateur would go out and tear apart tour courses but there are many shots that the commentary overhypes and I am confident I and many others could hit the same shot or even a little better
