Jeans on the golf course. Come on Now!!

Recommended Posts

Driving in to the golf course the other day and I noticed a lot more people mainly men who think wearing Jeans to the golf course is okay. To me it is tacky and courses shouldn't allow it either public or private. Dress up a little bit and put on some Kakis or go to your local Ross or Marshals and find a pair of golf pants for $20. Golf is not about just the game but also the look. I'm not saying you have to dress up like a PGA professional but don't look like you are doing some yard work either.

What was the environment, cold? Warm?I wear jeans in the colder temps and it is quite acceptable at non private courses in the fall.

No reason.when I am cold, I wear a thermal layer or long johns under my golf pants. I am 40 years old and when I got i to the game 22 years ago, it came with knowing the rules of golf and having golf etiquette. You just don't wear jeans on a golf course. Dress up a little bit or a lot and be proud of the game.

I think wearing jeans to a public or private course that allows denim is perfectly fine.

To many, golf is a way to relax and forget about life for a few hours. I know a lot of people who feel uncomfortable in golf pants. Tough to relax when you are forced to wear something that makes you uncomfortable.

Growing the game will be very difficult if you make everyone wear golf pants.

That would be Valid if you wear jeans to every event I.e work, church, parties special occasions. So you are telling me you wear jeans to every event you go to.

I have to admit. I’m a jeans guy in the fall and early spring here in Ohio. Unless I get an invite to a private course, it’s Usually jeans for me for cold weather Golf. Usually black jeans, but still jeans.

I was a teaching pro in the 90’s in So. Cal. and I would have definitely frowned on it then, but I guess age and relocation has mellowed my opinion.

People here in central Ohio simply don’t give a damn if you wear jeans or not. I dig my Black Wranglers. Very comfy and warm.

Pretty much, yes.

My son is senior minister at a church in Denver. Since this topic is semi regular, I asked him about attire, specifically jeans, in his church. His response, “I just want them to be there, I don’t care what they’re wearing”.

This topic has been beaten to death. If the course allows jeans, then they’re fine. If the dress code says no, then don’t wear them. Pretty simple.

Although maybe golf specific pants are coming with a hole in the seat now........better to accommodate the stick some people have shoved up there.

No stick here, just taught that way by golfers when I got in the game. So since they allow 5 1/2 hour rounds on some courses then we should stop complaining about slow play also so we can accommodate those who play slow right? Just because you can doesn't mean you should right.

Sorry, the stick comment probably sounded funnier in my head than it came out.

In the rules etiquette section, pace of play is mentioned. I don’t belive jeans are however.

It’s nice the golfers who taught you believed that. It also doesn’t mean it is the correct or only way.

I prefer not to wear jeans. But, I don't really care what someone else chooses to wear. I play a lot at a city owned course in Tucson. There are folks here who don't think the city should be in the business of owning golf courses, so it is really important that the courses are as economically successful as possible. If being less restrictive on the dress code gets people paying and playing, I'm all for it.

I don't tuck in my shirt, am I evil? :diablo:

I agree. I have seen people play in jeans and t-shirts. I also think one should remove his cap while indoors. :-)

True it's not the only way. Back then it this was only 20 years ago, I rarely saw golfers wearing jeans and most courses frowned on people wearing jeans. The one time I did, they had me put on some rain paints. Look, I like wearing jeans as much as the next guy but when I play, I want to look like I can golf even though my game might not show up. Golf courses now have become so accommodating so allowing jeans on the course is equivalent to allowing slow play to happen. Back then you showed up to the course looking sharp with the expectation that you will play ready golf and keep up with the group in front of you.

I have to wonder about some individuals in these forums who have such one-way thinking, "either it's my way or you are wrong". Are their that many pros in here? earning a living playing golf? can't people just relax and play casual golf?

Personally, I don't go for jeans in the golf season, but out of season it is acceptable here in Michigan, especially at non private courses. I say, "get over yourself"!

Social norms change dude. Do you get dressed up for a plane flight? People used to do that.

Hell golfers of yesteryear used to play in shirt and tie. They'd probably be appalled by your form fitting golf pants and Nike cap.

So how about you get over yourself and let my jeans go, and I'll do my best to only laugh behind your back at your orange shirt and white belt.

Cool?

I've seen in it California and Texas - less so in the PNW. Folks in warmer states might not have warm trousers, so they where jeans on courses that allow it, to mitigate the chilliness. Or someone going for an impromptu round might not have a change of clothing.

If a course allows this, you'd have to be pretty uptight about many things to find this in any way shape or form "wrong".

Actually played golf on a chilly Christmas morning a few years ago in Monterey with a gentleman visiting from the East Coast to see his daughter who was in college.

They were a gracious pair, while it didn't directly come up they seemed very well off (lawyer or finance) and able to go to Ross as the op suggests; however, he wore jeans and she had track suit bottoms on.

It was a fun way to spend Christmas morning, so much so I remember it 4 years on.

Jeans and slow play have absolutely no link. Jeans and etiquette have no link.

Simple question I’ve asked on this board numerous times. Would you rather play with a person who is quick, fun to play with, and has good etiquette who is wearing jeans. Or a person who who is dressed “correctly” who is the complete opposite of the first guy? If you’re that hung up on jeans that you choose the second guy, that’s fine, it’s your opinion. But it just illustrates that what someone is wearing has little to no bearing on their demeanor on the course.

Did you read the OP? While it wasn’t hostile it certainly was demeaning, “look like you’re going to do yard work”.

An opinion can certainly be offered in a way that that isn’t insulting to the other group. “I really don’t like the look of jeans on the course and don’t think they should be allowed”. Now there is an opinion that is just that. An opinion, not a judgement.

You probably remember the really, really long (75 pages or so) about this from several years ago. Terms like “trash”, “mouth breathers”, and my personal favorite, “people of Wal-Mart” were thrown around referencing people who wear jeans.

If you’re going to throw it out there you have to expect it might be batted back at you.

Forgive me but the thread topic mildly annoyed me. When op implied that jeans = slow play, that amped it up a notch.

It is a discussion forum where you offer opinions right. Not attacking anybody and believe me after this topic is done players will still wear jeans or tee shirts, tank tops you name it. Take a deep breath life goes on.

I think the game of golf deserves the respect of proper attire. While I can understand and appreciate the economics of loosening stuffy traditions, I'd like to add that a lot of the casually dressed are also the same people that don't replace divots, rake bunkers, fix ball marks, or park their carts in the proper places around greens and tee's. They also don't understand ettiquite or pace of play. Please understand these are my observations playing public courses and not meant to be a judgement on the whole.

I actually witnessed a group of drunk jeans wearing fellas try to fight a ranger for asking them to keep pace while they were leaving a tee box my group was approaching. It was by far the most bizarre and sad thing I've ever witnessed on a golf course (edit) to be fair, only one was wearing jeans, but the others looked pretty rough
