Jeans on the golf course. Come on Now!!

Recommended Posts

Not craziness just consistency. I'm not about not letting people play but I'm looking for golfers who respect the game who don't come to the course expecting to hack up the golf course, not rake bunkers, fix divots, play slow and expect the golf course to allow that to happen.

What does any of that have to do with jeans?

It's my guess and from what I have seen, wearing jeans to golf is tied to certain types of behavior on the golf course. I say that because on many muni courses here in SOCA I often see guys wearing jeans. They tend to be similar in behavior to those wearing sagging gross shorts, tank tops, and t-shirts etc.

Often they are too lazy to rake bunkers or fix divots, drink excessively, many are not respectful of others, f-this and f-that, without concern for who's nearby, and drive carts anywhere like they're four-wheeling. Yep, I generalize, still, the association exists.

In all my years of golf, can't say I have seen a well-dressed golfer regardless of handi, unaware of etiquette and play the game disrespectfully, like the aforementioned. That's not to say they don't exist, its to say they haven't crossed my path golfing. :beach:

I’ve seen every bit of that from people dressed all kind of ways, including in typical golf attire. Material choice for clothing does not make a person act like an idiot.

Just making a bogus post like most here!

What?

Topic is simple - it's a dress code thing per establishments. Everything else posted is just opinions about jeans and customs.

I'll second the 'What?' and quote the OP to refresh your memory:

Driving in to the golf course the other day and I noticed a lot more people mainly men who think wearing Jeans to the golf course is okay. To me it is tacky and courses shouldn't allow it either public or private. Dress up a little bit and put on some Kakis or go to your local Ross or Marshals and find a pair of golf pants for $20. Golf is not about just the game but also the look. I'm not saying you have to dress up like a PGA professional but don't look like you are doing some yard work either.

My memory is pretty good or at least I remember my initial post from 7 days ago on the subject:

It seems we are at an impasse: those that don't think jean are appropriate will not convince those who think they are, and vice versa.

Not really at an impasse.

It is a fact that golf fashion has changed drastically thru the ages ........

There will always be those that resist the change and others that embrace it.

What is an absolute truth is those that resist will eventually lose.

Here is a great article on the changes in golf fashion.

In a way it has a lot to do with it. It's not just jeans anymore, like stated before, you see golfers coming out wearing sweats and thinking it Is okay. People coming to the course expecting to take 5 hours to finish a round. Why because courses are so accommodating. When you are not consistent with how the course is run and the expectation of players on the course whether it's golf etiquette or attire, that's when the game of golf loses its value.

Good article. Jeans haven't made the line-up though. Be interesting to see how that plays out.

I'll admit I'm probably biased since the area dress code here permits jeans and I wear them year round

I think it's rather simple, there is a time and place not to wear jeans, and a time and place that it's okay to wear them. People are so polarized today to one side or the other they refuse to bend a little and close their minds to what's best.

Played a new course in Colorado yesterday. Looked on their website to check dress code but couldn’t find any mention of jeans or denim. So, not wanteing to get a surprise at the course I didn’t wear jeans. Get to the tee and I’m paired with an ex Navy guy who was wearing sweatpants.

I couldn’t help but think of this thread in two ways. 1: how I overdressed and 2: how much fun the guy in sweatpants was to play with (and his etiquette was impeccable too).

Try a round or two in the real world.

I play with guys who wear jeans always unless it's too hot (and some who wear them 100% of the time) - their standards of etiquette and the way they conduct themselves is nothing like your prejudiced description of your "associations".

OP, you've found a friend - it's not helping your argument one bit.

How is someone wearing jeans having effect on your game? Mind your business and pay attention to the slice you just sent my way two fairways over.

You traditionalists need to chill out, sometimes. Jeans / denim is not a big thing. And I get the whole "you just don't do.... nya nya nya". It's 2018. Mother fuckers are driving off the deck at the tee box and not filling their divot holes. Worry bout them. They're probably the same guy but, you're not mentioning that part.

One of my buddies does all the time. It's his work attire and if he's lucky he gets to sneak out for a few holes.

It depends on the location. Are they in dire straights that they can't afford to say no to anyone. There's a few courses like that in my area.

He's only been denied entry once, ironically at my club. And that came with a "What's the time? Argh, I can't let you on now. If a member sees you and has a whinge about it, I'll have to deal with it". Basically if we had arrived an hr later, he would've let it slide because there would've been so few people on the course. In the end, he gave my buddy a discount off a pair of shorts that were already on the discount rack and lent him a pair of shoes.

Our club has joined many others in allowing jeans in the club house.

Recently we changed our dress code to allowed for certain golf shirts to be untucked on the golf course.

I visit high rise construction sites and since this thread I have noticed that I have not seen any construction workers wearing jeans. However I have seen a lot wearing khaki pants.

Maybe we should be allowing jeans and banning khaki's.

Things are changing.

I’m a traditionalist, but just like the business world going from suit and tie to business casual to now seeing business people in jeans and a polo, perhaps we start to see some relaxing of local club rules around attire.

My club is beyond strict w must have collared shirt, shirt has to be tucked, only dress slacks or golf specific pants or shorts, no cargo pants, no backwards hats, etc.

I keep asking and not getting a real answer other than "respect for the game" which is undefinable I guess: what is wrong with certain apparel at any given time as long as it covers the things it needs to cover?

What is wrong with it that makes you look at people and think poorly of them?

Ouch! I'm afraid I couldn't be a member of a club like that. I'm in a fairly rural area and you'd have to drive 80 - 100 miles to find a club with dress codes like that.
