Jeans on the golf course. Come on Now!!

Recommended Posts

Seems to me most of the posts slamming the OP are more judgmental than the OP was.

How so? And so far, think most of posts have been pretty civil, not a lot of slamming. But the fact is, the judging started with the OP.

How did I judge in your opinion, I wear jeans practically everyday of my life when not at a business meeting or at a special function.

What I actually find interesting on my Post when I reference seeing people wearing Jeans, it wasnt the younger generation even. These were all gentlemen in their probably 60's who were wearing jeans. I almost thought they grew up watching Nicklaus, Palmer, The black Knight, dressed in golf attire when they were playing. Like I said guys, Im not looking for everyone to rush to their local golf shop and look like Rickie fowler or start investing in Loudmouth golf but if jeans is all you can come up with, to each their own.

I don’t think anyone has said “jeans is all they can come up with”, that’s a pretty poor generalization. You don’t seem to get it, some people like to wear them, and they are within the course’s dress code. Just because YOU don’t like them doesn’t make them wrong.

Seriously?

“Driving in to the golf course the other day and I noticed a lot more people mainly men who think wearing Jeans to the golf course is okay. To me it is tacky and courses shouldn't allow it either public or private. Dress up a little bit and put on some Kakis or go to your local Ross or Marshals and find a pair of golf pants for $20. Golf is not about just the game but also the look. I'm not saying you have to dress up like a PGA professional but don't look like you are doing some yard work either.”

That entire post is judgmental.

Think about how silly it is though, the idea that the material those guys pants were made of is somehow inferior? A shirt with a collar (that basically serves little to no function) is somehow different than a shirt without?

To me it's all holdover from the days when only the rich and important were allowed on the course.

This is a case of "when in Rome" If you are playing the local muni then wear what you want, if you are playing an upscale public or private then follow the dress code. Simple.

I often go to the local municipal course and use the driving range, I often wear gym shorts and a T-shirt, or even jeans but rarely. If I am playing a more upscale or private club then I dress accordingly.

It's really not that hard to figure out.

BTW I keep my clubs, a golf shirt, golf shorts or golf slacks in my car at all times during the season. You never know when or where you might end up teeing it up on any given day. But if I end up at a public course that doesn't have a strict dress code and someone is wearing jeans....feel free to join my group I will NOT be offended.

If you dress like a pro but have poor etiquette or slow the group down there is a good chance I will be offended.

And in fairness to the OP, I think we probably all prejudge a little bit.

I ended up getting paired last summer with a couple guys. Didn’t know them. Get out there and they’re in basketball shorts and tank tops. I have to admit that my first thoughts were “oh boy, what is this going to be like”. Turns out they weren’t bad. Played quickly, good etiquette, and just a lot of fun.

Yes the clothes made me do a double take at first, but what they were wearing (which was within the dress code) really was irrelevant to how they comported themselves around the course.

Yes, it is to me. Obviously you don’t. Just another opinion difference.

But to me, classifying something as tacky is very judgmental.

A couple of years ago I was paired up with a "gangsta" 3-some. They walked the walk and talked the talk, covered in bling, and wearing clothes that even a 1973 Johnny Miller would find "interesting". lol

They were a lot of fun.

Where else can you find a 60s something white guy, hanging around with three Hispanic gangstas and having fun doing it?

That what makes this game so great. :-)

I can see #19. It was a bit of a slam. I thought #14 was just funny and #17 actually very fair.

I think for the most part that all most are saying. It’s perfectly fine to not like them. But if they are within the requirements then I don’t think the wearer deserves to catch flak about them.

For the record, I don’t wear them often. Only when we are playing in the cooler months, just because that’s what I wear to work. I wouldn’t argue if someone says they are heavier or not as comfortable. Although the comfortable part is purely subjective for each person. I just hate that implication that someone who wears jeans on the course is “less than”someone who doesn’t.

But when I head your way in two weeks, I won’t be playing in jeans (hopefully it will be shorts weather).

Good Lord, it's more troll the ancient Yuletide threads - :read:

Course doesn't want jeans, it will let you know. Otherwise wearing anything the course allows is perfectly acceptable.

We wear jeans quite often, when not wearing cargo shorts with my shirt untucked (which is all summer). Sure, I have some golf pants I like to wear and wear them when I'm feeling like looking "smart" or because I'm at a course or with people that might feel better if I did, but jeans is the order of the day for most folks in the early Spring and fall around here at every course in the area. Was just looking at rules for some pretty nice courses in the UK - some say no jeans, some say ok, some say jeans unless in a competition. Again, up to the course, not up to you OP.

This topic has been done to death on here.

I’m the type who gets weird abt people wearing hats in a restaurant so I might be the best one to ask. That being said, when my son was about 5/6 and was wearing a tee shirt and shorts, the pro comes up to him and tells him he needs a collared shirt. Even at that age my son was like WTF? Turned him off to golf for a while cuz he said he didn’t want to go back to that place cuz they yelled at his abt his shirt. So discouraging for a kid

I guess that's the problem with the written word, it's open sometimes to interpretation. To me the op was stating an opinion, his preference on attire. Perhaps a bit strongly. Others seem to have interpreted it as if he was attempting to issue a denim mandate.

I've scrolled by this thread twice today and have read the title as . . . "Jesus on the golf course".

Finally stopped to discover the word "Jeans".

Somehow the thread is far less interesting now.

It's got me thinking, I wonder if anyone has ever had a biblical moment on the golf course while wearing jeans?

Deadsolid you are reaching now. This is a discussion board about golf right? Same can be said about people thoughts on White belts or shoes that look more like tennis shoes. You are correct at the end of the day you can wear whatever you like course permitting. Nothing against players who wear jeans just putting my opinion on it out there based on what I saw driving in to my local golf course. Issuing a mandate is a stretch but if you take it that way then there you go. Now between thick corduroys, I would probably wear jeans myself.

That's the spirit.

I generally tee off as a single at first light. On more than one occasion I've worn jeans and also black jogging pants. The latter feel liberating. Time and place matters.

If it was his privately owned course it would be a mandate. On a message board it's an opinion. How can he mandate anything on here?
