Pondering the switch to right hand

So I've been golfing left handed steady for the past 15 years and worked down to a 10hcp. I am also a bit of an equipment junkie. Recently I've been lamenting the lack of new equipment available in left hand & have been increasingly thinking of switching to right hand.

 

Has anyone done this successfully? How long would it take to work back down to around my current 10hcp.

I’d bet longer than it took you to drop to a 10 hdcp left handed.

 

On the bright side your club ho’ing could drop to a plus 3 in a month.

A much larger selection of unfamiliar clubs, in an unfamiliar hand, could prove disappointing (to say the least), especially if the hand is thine own.

Start with the putter.

Putt all year right handed.

If you haven't pulled all your hair out by September then get a driver.

I have a friend here at WRX who is right handed but plays golf leftie and another who is left handed

and plays golf rightie. I think they have always played that way. It seems most make their choice

when they first start playing. For you, making a switch after all these years, I don't know. Doesn't hurt

to try but would have to think it's for more reason than just having more clubs to pick from.

Handedness is so interesting. I have friends that write left-handed but play golf righty. One throws a ball righty and plays lefty. I am totally right handed in most ways but I can switch hit baseball. I feel very clumsy lefty golf and cannot write lefty. Yet I play guitar which requires the left hand doing the hard part of fretting. With enough time and effort I think it can happen but no guarantee that you will have the same level of skill.

There's a guy in our league that switched last year as he is left handed but had been playing right. He is somewhat ambidextrous. He did it almost flawlessly. We were amazed. He did continue to putt right-handed, and said he will stay that way with his putting.

I am VERY gad to be left-handed. It has saved me countless dollars of impulsive club purchases...

Interesting.

My daughter is a natural southpaw and can play golf equally well left or right handed but can only putt lefty.

I remember a day at the range years ago watching this guy hit balls. He was striping a fairway wood straight and long with perfect impact and flight. As I was admiring his swing the guy pulls a right handed driver out and starts killing it. Just another humbling day at the range for me I guess.

As a martial arts instructor, I always told my students that they had to be ambidextrous, followed by "I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous". Played d-back in high school, golf, volleyball in college also played golf, A softball. Also competed on a national level in martial arts, fought some pro fights, have been a scratch so feel I am coordinated however I tried to hit a golf ball left handed and had no ability whatsoever. I am sooooo impressed with anyone that can hit from both sides.

Growing up I swung left handed the handful of times I’d go to the driving range each summer. Also left handed in hockey, lacrosse, baseball swing. When I was 18 and wanted to start actually playing golf I learned to play right handed because that was the only set of clubs we had in the garage. (Still putt lefty though.) Definitely glad now to have more options for clubs haha.

If you’re naturally ambidextrous, then borrow some equipment and give it a try. If you’re not, then it’s just winter crazy talk.

Golf is hard enough as it is, never mind switching to hit it the other way around!

 

The way I look at it is this - people who take up golf as youngsters, generally, always seem to be better than the guys who take up the game in there 20's and 30's. Switching sides will be like starting again, no way that is going to be a fun experience.

Great to hear the opinions so far. Keep em coming. As a natural lefty there are some things I have learned to do right handed like work the computer mouse. It feels totally foreign in my left hand. I have 2 things that may help with the switch if I try it. Time in the long winter & free access to a golf simulator.

 

I can say one thing for sure though. I wish someone would have told me when I started golfing that I should have learned right handed.
