New England January

JFitz357

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm starting to go stir crazy....but there's some light this week. Tomorrow I will be attending the annual meeting of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of New England and Friday I'm heading to New Bedford for a tour of the Titleist ball plant there!!

I've made my reservations for the Golf Industry Show in San Antonio for the first week in February and my home course, Presidents GC is usually open by mid March.

I CAN MAKE IT!!

I feel for you buddy. And all of my friends here that reside up north. Brutal winter.

Hang in there. Spring will be here soon - and Feb is less than a month away!

And I didn't even mention all of the "benefits" you get to enjoy that I don't have:

1. White Christmas - that does not involve sand.

2. Health benefits of shoveling snow.

3. Incredibly beautiful landscapes and views.

4. Tons of history - everywhere you look.

5. Snowball fights.

6. Snowmen.

7. A nice warm fireplace. (romantic too!)

8. Snow mobiles.

9. Sledding, skiing and snowboarding.

10. Hot chocolate.

I feel your pain. Living in the Boston area this year has been brutal and you can't even get to the range with the ridiculous cold either (although I'm heading there tonight thankfully). Even the courses that are typically open during the winter won't be open until February from the look of it. I'm still staring at 18" of snow in my yard, but as it's 50* today maybe some of that mess will melt. Guess I'll book some lessons and hope for the best.

Lol, New Year's day was so bad it was funny. First we had to abandon our game because the reasonable day forecast the day before turned out to be none-stop rain until lunch time. Then when it cleared up I decided to go back and do some range work. Turned out there were no balls in the machine because the bad weather was preventing them from running the buggy to collect balls from the range. But they had a few emergency baskets for members so I eventually got some. Then the clouds all blew away and we got a glorious sunny day. Trouble is I'd forgotten that our range faces south :-/

Range work isn't easy when you're firing into the sun :-/

1. White Christmas - that does not involve sand.

Sand in the streets, coming in the house whenever the plows run! Love snow for Christmas!

2. Health benefits of shoveling snow.

Snowblowers trump heart attacks.

3. Incredibly beautiful landscapes and views.

!

4. Tons of history - everywhere you look.

Florida has more history than Iowa.

5. Snowball fights.

Put your eye out.

6. Snowmen.

Nice enough to make 'em, nice enough for them to melt.

7. A nice warm fireplace. (romantic too!)

Now we are getting somewhere!

8. Snow mobiles.

Lawn mowers on skis.

9. Sledding, skiing and snowboarding.

We have some small hills, kids used to love them.

10. Hot chocolate.

Ran out of coffee (mortal sin) and had some this morning!

: )

I think I'd take some milder temps most of the time and take my chances with a gator or two, but if there are mosquitos year round, no thanks, bad enough here in the summer!

Another thing for you northern golfers is during the summer you have more daylight hours

than we do down south! Of course, that matters little now. If it's any consolation, we've

had some pretty cold days down here in Bama, even some snow and ice!

Yes and we typically only get 8-10 days over 90!! Fall golf is pure up here!

Depending on this mid-week snow, we may be back on the course next weekend...

Our 40 degrees, with the humidity, is definitely "colder feeling" than other places I have been.

Visited my brother in Colorado and it was 29 degrees - and I was wearing just a coat and gloves and never once felt chilled. But once you get under around 15 everything is numb anyway so at that point it's what I call "Titanic cold" - hypothermia is setting in every second you are out in it and it hurts when you come back into the warm and the blood returns.

Did anyone on the Cape happen to open this weekend? Hopefully this week of weather helps the conditions. Been waiting patiently in CT for the Cape to bring us out of depression.

According to their newsletter, Hyannis did NOT open this weekend. Apparently, the combo of cold weather - warm weather - cold weather / snow - ice - rain put the greens in jeopardy. Last I heard they're going to try and re-open end of this week
