Who knows what would have happened to the careers of Hoch and Faldo, if Hoch holed the putt...

That play off in 89 must be one of the most dramatic in the history of golf. Faldo was very very lucky to escape on the 10th after a poor approach shot into the bunker and a bogey - but his birdie on the 11th in near-darkness was magnificent. I imagine Faldo's thought bubble in that top gif as something like "gotta go and shake his hand - hang on, f*cking hell, he's missed - and put it twice as far by!" It was a memorable final round that is for sure. Norman bogeyed the 18th to miss the playoff by 1. Crenshaw bogeyed the 18th to the miss the playoff by 1 (playing in the final group). Hoch bogeyed the 17th. Missing a fairly short putt. He ended shoot 69 with 4 birdies and 1 bogey. Faldo was 5 shots back going into the final round and shoots 65. This was Hoch's 17th hole:

Hoch should really have won. Mike "Radar" Reid also had the lead before feebly pitching into the pond on the 15th, and Seve was in it too (water on 15th/16th?). Crenshaw's double breaking putt after hitting a 4-wood (!) onto the 17th green in the pouring rain was pretty good... 1 Quote PING G410 plus 9* PING G410 5 wood, 19 hybrid PING i530 4i PING i210 5-PW PING Anser 50 56 wedges PING Eye 2+ BeCu LW PING Anser 5+ BeCu (1991) / PING Hovland SE

mat562
I was a huge Greg Norman fan as a teenager, and, honestly, if I ever got my hands on that MacGregor sand wedge it would be winging its way into that pond, but I have to say that this photo is one of my most abiding memories of being a golf-mad youngster.
