One of golfs most influential players, Gene Sarazen.

He is one of five players to win each of the Career Grand Slam. He has a total of 48 PGA tour wins, including 7 majors. One thisrd of the dominate trio who dominated golf during the 1920's along with Jones and Hagan.

In 1935 Sarazen hit "the shot heard 'round the world" at during the 1935 Masters when on the fifteenth hole in the final round he hit the equivalent of a modern day 4 wood 232 yards into the hole, scoring a albatross. At the time he was trailing Craig Wood by three shots. The albatross allowed him the catch Wood. Sarazen then parred the 16th, 17th and 18th holes to preserve the tie and the following day, the pair played a 36-hole playoff, with Sarazen winning by five shots.

Sarazen is credited with inventing the modern sand wedge, which debuted and used to win the 1932 Open Championship at Prince's Golf Club.

At the  age of 71, Sarazen made a hole-in-one at The Open Championship in 1973, on the "Postage Stamp" at Troon in Scotland.

Thank you for the really great photo showing Armour, Hagen, Sarazen & Jones.

Looks like Jones didn't put a lot of effort into his appearance that day.  He stopped mowing to hit his drive.

I was all set to make a "built like a linebacker" joke on account of Foley being about 5'6" and Irwin having played a little football, but it turns out that's actually quite close to the truth.  Getty images says:

MAY 19 1969, MAY 20 1969 Golf "Buffs" Compare notes Hale Irwin (right), former University of Colorado all-conference defensive back, shows Bobby Anderson grip he is currently using on the pro golf tour. Anderson is Colorado's starting quarterback and a senior in school. Credit: Denver Post

IIRC, Irwin was on staff with Wilson through most of the 80s and into the 90s.  At that time they (and of course PING) were one of the few pushing laminate woods so I think you're dead on there.  That seemed to be Wilson's preferred color scheme too--black painted, with red inserts.

Agree with laminate, Wilson was late to go back to persimmon, later came out with tour block line.

Wilson Staff woods were traditionally a red mahogany or persimmon finish with red lettering....the Walter Hagen/Haig Ultra  woods were usually done in a glossy black finish with white lettering....just like the irons , the Staff/Dynapower irons had the red hosel plug, the Haig/Hagen irons had the black hosel plug

Aussie legend Jack Newton is often forgotten…

he dang near won the 75 open but lost to watson in an epic 18 hole playoff…

he did beat Nicklaus and Miller(who would win the next year) at the height of their power…

And he was again runner up to Seve in the 80 masters…granted Seve’s win was a runaway

Tragic accident took him from competitive golf and now apparently dealing with Alzheimers.  Sad story, but he did make the most of life following the accident, or so it seemed.

it was really amazing he lived after having been mauled by a plane propeller….

Lost an arm [at the elbow I think]

But he was an Australian hero imho and received the medal of the order of Australia for his golf contributions pre and post accident.l

he was a shooting star on the pro golf scene and still made huge contributions to the game after his pro career ended…

hate that he’s largely forgotten outside of the Aussie golf world…

But to beat Nicklaus, Graham, oosterhuis, Miller and trevino at an open then lose by a single shot in a playoff to watson deserves massive props…

heres to newton!

When I was binge-watching the old Masters broadcasts on Youtube last year, he cropped up in a couple of them. IIRC, he came runner up in one in the late Seventies.

I wondered what had happened to him, as he looked to be a solid player, and just looked him up. Yes, lost his right arm at the elbow and an eye after walking into the propellor of a Cessna he was going to board. Apparently heavy rain and deficient safety measures at the airport were to blame.

50 years ago, Trevino won the US Open in an 18 hole playoff against Jack….but that’s just part of the story from that time….

From 1970-1972, Lee Trevino and Jack Nicklaus won 7 of 12 Majors.

Here’s a glimpse into the 2 man race that was the PGA Tour circa 70-72

I think its such a shame Trevino never really challenged for a Masters.  So many stories as to why he didn't really participate in the event but in my humble opinion he would have been a worthy career slammer if he had managed it.

My holy trinity is Jack, Tiger, and Lord Byron….

and if it’s a personal Mount Rushmore, add Miller…

anyhow, Lord Byron was an absolute killer…he wanted to win every hole he ever played…yet he was the nicest guy around…

I reckon he’s the rare one hogan had true reverence for…if nothing else, hogan was able to be himself with Nelson knowing there was nothing to prove and they were very old friends/competitors…

and Byron kinda had his number from the caddying days…which no one can really claim about the great hogan…

thought others might enjoy some not-so-common Lord Byron pics…

Also, first of the pics is the first 7 or so masters champs and here is the original AP tag for the pic:

“4/4/47-Augusta, Georgia- Seven of the eight past masters of the Augusta Masters Golf Tournament are shown lined up here before the opening round of the 11th tournament yesterday (l-r) are Horton Smith, 1934 & 1936 winner; Byron Nelson, 1937 & 1942; Henry Picard, 1938; Jimmy Demaret, 1940; Craig Wood, 1941; Gene Sarazen, 1935; and Herman Keiser, 1946. Ralph Guldahl, 1939 winner, is not in the picture.”

***note that ralph guldahl is not pictured…it can be argued his brain broke trying to hang with Nelson in the 30s…I love guldahl as a fellow Texan but Nelson was a killer

Congrats to Rahm for winning the 2021 US Open…

Seve gets a lot of attention in this thread as his swing rocks…

But his younger compatriot Jose Maria Olazabal was also exquisitely talented…

JMO had a more “modern” swing compared to Seve’s crazy cool reverse c, but Olazabal’s swing was awesome…especially in the early 90s…

Some love for Vijay Singh.

Amazing that a player from the Pacific Islands dominated the game of golf. That cannot be underestimated.

He got to world No. 1 during Tiger's prime years as well.

The glove game of guys back then was off the charts, far outplays the plain white we see everyone wear now.
